2010 Forum Ride Ideas?????????

No way they couldn't predict the weather? They could easily get hired at any of the local news stations as head of the weather dept then! ;)

That could occur anywhere at any time but when planning out a snow activity especially this far out there is always a chance of that happening. Ideally it would be held at whatever location had three feet of fresh fall the night before. :)

Very well said! The GM is never unrideable, but conditions vary statewide.

Maybe thats why we all enjoyed SLO last year, 3 feet of fresh the night before the ride. Epic, imo let's do it again......or we could start a circus-like caravan of sled trailers and just follow the dark clouds to where ever is best.

But then again, no hard feelings if you guys never ride GM again. More for us locals!!!!

and its :beer;-time

If you want the best snow in the state, then Buff Pass. A little limited on terrain, but tower station numbers consistently thrash every other place. I watch all the big snow stations and that's the recorded facts for all to see. If you look at the precip totals and snow depth, tower, WC, Irwin (Schoefield actually) are pretty close until about March, then Tower pulls ahead by a good margin through May. Bla bla bla, we all think where we ride has the deepest pow! (but some of us are right, bwahahahhaha). So Walden is the place! lol It does have a good option if the snow is hardpack, as you can head east to the med bow range and hit the high elevation bowls. You don't mind hardpack when you go there!

But for me, I'm more interested in the whole package rather than any single part. I'd just as soon be faced with maybe riding marginal snow if it meant I could ride and party from the lodge. That's more of what this ride is about for me. I thought SLO was pretty good for this shindig and I would be happy to go their again, but I'd have no problem driving 5 or 8 hours to ride at a place with similar perks too. For me it looks like SLO or GM, but there are probably other places that would fill the bill, just have to do some looking.

grand lake?
quite the snowmobile town for sure.
last forum ride I went on was the GM 4-5 yrs ago:(....
hardpack and ice,,,,still had fun....
CB has some great terrain, but you gotta trailer in 5 minutes or so from town....not too bad.

 Oh yeah! not a bad idea at all. That area you took me to up the IL river was loaded with great terrain and the snow was really good above 11 K. Not so deep lower down. Great climbing areas for all levels, tons of trail riding and mellow stuff too, but I like the lofty peaks there. Huge area too, if riding 50 miles to the Snowies is your thing. lol Def. need some good local guides to find the good stuff amongst the thick trees though. Probably a lot of lodging options too.

Staying/riding out of CB would be awesome. I prolly would have made that ride if it was based out of CB.

Ahhh, I see what's going on here......Ray musta' given your buddies directions to "Grand Mesa".....:D
The top of the GM that I ride averages 10,500 and get's consistant, deep snow and is the best combination of terrain that I've seen yet. Anyways...

i usually park my truck and unload at 10,000 feet. The best snow is between 11 and 13, at least around summit. I really would like to check out GM. Wolf Creek has the deepest snow in the state year after year, no question.

There are some good climbes on the mesa. Hidden Valley is a blast! You can climb or boondock.

SSSSHHH!! That's why it's called "hidden" valley.
:face-icon-small-hap Here's Happy Valley right next door.
No climbs and no snow here.

I almost forgot about that sweet day of sidehillin' Charley. The big crowds were a bummer though. Only a few months away.

Yeah, those other two guys really got in the way.
Where ya been? Ray and I have been hitting the Unc. every weekend.
Linking some decent 50/60 mile loops. Ray is getting faster and soon he will be another guy faster than me. Sheeze... I guess I'm too good of a teacher. :D

Nah Charlie.........something comes to mind about old age and treachery always trumping youth and vigor! ;)

Hope you are well.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Maybell! We could rent the old Ski Maybell Lodge and the city park is open to camping year round. We could ride the old ski runs. Ride right from town and hit Little Juniper Mountain to the south, Godiva Rim to the north, Lay Creek drainage to the east and of course Irish Canyon to the west.
I can Guarantee there wouldn't be many other riders there.
I know the locals would love to see 30 or 40 sleds show up. I bet they would be lined up to take pictures of the gathering!

If we fill up the lodge and the campground in town,we could send the overflow to Sunbeam. Should be plenty of open space that time of year.
Plenty of climbs just a bit north in Sand Wash. Widowmaker, C.R. hill, Eagle's Nest.
