2009/10 Snowy Range snow conditions

going to be heading down that way in a few weeks, well ive never been there just wondering where most of the good riding is north or south of the highway?

North Diggler, North. That's where the WidowMaker is too. We just got back to the place we're staying outside Centennial. It was 30-35 degrees today, snow softened up a little bit, mostly just 6-12" of soft stuff but we found a few places that had a couple feet of untouched. Supposed to snow tonight so we'll see.

Update on Snow conditions....Hard, very hard. Especially when you land on your tail after a big drop.

I rode by this cliff that afternoon and saw that someone came off that cliff. We were wondering if that was on purpose? Impressive, I have always wanted to do that cliff. And the boyz from 10 HIGH are going to go for the cliff on the far left this year.. if we can get some snow!!

So in the words of your mom..."if your friends jumped off a cliff would you?"

Now you can honestly say, 'He11 yeah!"

sorry just had to say it. Most impressive but looked like it was a rough landing.

Thanks for all the great info here guys, we normally ride Montana but with the lack of snow there decided to try something different. Using the information from here we decided to stay at Winter Creek Cabins the week of Feb. 14th. Thanks again.

Where you ridng? East or West side? We are leaving in the morning for Ten Mile.

Shortstop20 is in my group, we rode the west side today, we were up north by trail X. We got into a bad prediciment in the medicine bow river. If you get up there and see tracks going through the creek bed. Dont go in there, we spent a Hell of a lot of time getting out. we didn't get to the trailer till 8:30 tonight. Thanks to gps!! visibility was 0, snowing hard and blowing. I have rode the snowies alot and this is the first time i was sure we were gonna spend the night under a pine tree. No joke. worst experience i have ever had sledding. But if it clears up it will be awesome. Got alot of snow today and tonight. Be safe and have fun.

Weekend Avy Forecast

Backcountry Avalanche Forecast for Front Range

Issued 02/05/2010 5:43 AM by Scott Toepfer

Highlights
Some fairly strong winds along the Front Range zone Thursday night into Friday morning have created some shallow slab on easterly aspect slopes. Some clearing Friday morning will give way to increasing clouds and a better chance of some snow flurries in the afternoon

Avalanche Danger
The avalanche danger for the Front Range zone is CONSIDERABLE on N-NE-E-SE-S aspects near and just above treeline. Friday morning we will add some pockets of CONSIDERABLE on NE-E-SE aspects below treeline due to some strong winds transporting snow into sheltered terrain such as gullies and cross loaded ridges. The danger is MODERATE on all other slopes.

Snow & Avalanche Discussion
Thursday night into Friday morning brought some strong west to northwest winds along the Front Range. The southern end of the zone did better for snowfall and picked up around 4 inches new snow so look for fresh slab on easterly aspects. Some of these slabs may have formed further down slope then normal The new snow will be reactive in wind affected areas, and steep spots will slide. The older snow will be a bit more stubborn, but the concern is that a smaller avalanche in the new snow will be enough weight to trigger a deeper layer and pull out something big and ugly. Recently, we have seen a pattern of loading in a band of terrain near and just above treeline. Last weekend avalanches were starting in this band, often lower in the starting zone, and gaining steam as they pick up the weak snow below treeline. Keep this pattern in mind as you manage terrain today, in larger paths you may have unstable new snow in the upper start zone, and potentially unstable older snow lower in the path.

Below treeline, recent snow has settled into a soft slab resting on weak, faceted junk. There are some decomposing crusts and interfaces mixed in. The recent strong winds may have built small pockets of tender slabs on NE-E-SE aspects in sheltered gullies and cross laoded wind rolls Be conscious of places where the snow is supportable and is able to act as a slab. Large open slopes could produce large avalanches, and terrain features like trees, gullies, or rocks increase the consequences of small slabs and sluffs in the rotten snow.

Going to be in Denver at end of Feb, and would like to ride the Snowy's first couple days of March.

Recommendations please as to sled rentals, lodging, etc. Am thinking Centennial or something else close to Denver and east side of Snowy's.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
