2009/10 Big Horns North/South snow conditions

Went up sunday found some good snow to break the sleds in :beer; just not enough yet to really get off the trails or roads. Five guys from gillette were lost up there for two days three of them had never been up before and they all got stuck down in a bowl and couldnt get out.

They ran out of gas up off of hunt mountain road south. Sam kennidy was one of the 2 guys that walked out after the second night. A high school buddy of mine. I am thinking kyle Cottin was also one of them a mechanic from destination X. All where found and ok though.

Their sleds are probably still up there, bad as they had them buried. 5 of them coudn't get one out to go for help, lucky they were able to build a fire.

The 5 guys that got stuck up there got stock cause they didnt know the area and tried to drop into an area that you can only get 2 from the bottom. Had nothing to do with how much snow we have or don't have i should say.

last dec i came across five gillette guys around the wall rock area in a blizzard you couldn't see 20 feet infront of you they sure said they were headed out wall rock even though they were in a area there was no way out all riding polaris and they followed me and my bro out we went almost to the passage oops the elk view i think they were turned around a little,at one point so was i blizzards are hard to ride in, glad these gillette guys stayed warm over night and are all OK

I am scheduled to be out there between christmas and new years:( I really hope they get a storm before then or it is going to be pretty boring on the 162.

It will come, always does....early season riding is hardly ever that good in the Horns. Best snow in Horns is traditionally feb, mar, apr. Patience grass hoppers. We are riding this weekend and will let you know how it is.

Rode the north end on Friday. Went up Dayton Gultch and then north on H. Stayed on the trail for the most part. There is a little powder heading to the golf ball but there's not much base and didn't want to tear anything up, pretty much stayed on the road. Need another foot to help things out. Don't think I'll go back until that happens. Was nice to smell some 2-stroke smoke.
