The general avalanche hazard is MODERATE. Recent snowfall and southwest winds have increased the load on a snowpack comprised of weak layers of faceted snow and slick crusts. Humans who venture onto steep avalanche prone slopes could trigger slab avalanches up to three feet in depth. Evaluate terrain carefully and use good travel habits.

It is my understanding that there has been a few avalanches in the last 24 hours.

This is very responsible- thanks-

Perhaps if the snowmachine lodges in the snowies did this- those folks who got stuck wouldnt have been in so much trouble- if they knew of low temps and high winds they may have dressed differently?

The general avalanche hazard is CONSIDERABLE. Recent new snow lies upon an unstable base comprised of persistent weak layers of faceted snow and slick crusts. Yesterday a skier died after being buried by an avalanche at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Dangerous slab avalanches up to four feet in depth are becoming increasingly sensitive to human triggers and could release naturally. Conservative decisions and good terrian evaluation and route finding skills are essential for safe travel in avalanche terrain.

Update

It has been crazy here in Jackson Hole. Yesterday was extremely warm (for us anyways). Mid 20s here at the ranch and the town of Jackson experienced rain. The big news is an avalanche at Teton Village slammed into the Bridger Restaurant complex mid mountain. Pictures can be found at http://www.jacksonholenews.com/article.php?art_id=4070

We received a few more inches yesterday and last night was extremely windy. We are forecasted for a New Years Eve/New Years Day storm. We hope that it develops.

The following is the forecast:
This Afternoon: A 20 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 17. Wind chill values as low as -5. West wind around 18 mph.

Tonight: A 40 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 5. Wind chill values as low as -15. West wind between 15 and 18 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Wednesday: Snow likely, mainly after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 22. Wind chill values as low as -15. Breezy, with a west southwest wind between 18 and 28 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Wednesday Night: Snow. Low around 10. Wind chill values as low as -10. Windy, with a west wind between 26 and 30 mph, with gusts as high as 39 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

The general avalanche hazard is CONSIDERABLE. Strong winds have drifted available snow increasing the size of potential avalanches. The snow lies upon an unstable base comprised of persistent weak layers of faceted snow and slick crusts. Saturday a skier died after being buried by an avalanche at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort despite rapid recovery. Dangerous slab avalanches up to four feet in depth continue to be sensitive to human triggers and could release naturally. Conservative decisions and good terrain evaluation and route finding skills are essential for safe travel in avalanche terrain.

What's the riding conditions like up there after the warm air moved through?
I'm heading up there Monday and starting to wonder if I should potpone the trip due to avalanche conditions and crusty snow. Is it still worth heading out there next week?

I would definitely come. We are expecting two feet of new powder by Friday night. The avalanche conditions are better on Togwotee since the last storm did not give us as much snow as the Tetons. Although conservative decisions would still be recommend at least through Friday. I hope this helps.

Update

It seems that the avalanches have calmed down for now. We are forecasted to receive 1 to 2 feet of new snow in the next 48 hours. Snow depths are great (+6 feet). Trails are ok from a grooming standpoint. The CD has been hammered the past couple of days.

Update

It is snowing like crazy. We are forecasted to receive 2 to 3 feet (yes feet) of new snow. We have another 1/2 foot of new snow already. The trails are currently rough. I'm uncertain why but I'm sure the holidays played a part.

Our snow depths are equal to last year with Brooks at 42" and Togwotee Pass at 63" (snow depth). We do have limited number of cabins available in January. The riding should be awesome for the beginning of January.

The Forecast:

The general avalanche hazard will increase to HIGH. New snow and strong winds will create new dense wind slabs upon an unstable base comprised of persistent weak layers of faceted snow and slick crusts. Dangerous slab avalanches up to five feet in depth are likely to be triggered by humans on steep avalanche prone slope. Natural avalanche activity is possible. TRAVEL IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN IS NOT RECOMMENDED.

Update

Our winter storm is coming to an end. We received a total of 1 to 2 feet of new snow. The trails are in terrible condition. I hope that the groomers get busy. Togwotee Pass has a snow depth of 70" (almost 6 feet). We are forecasted to receive another 1/2 foot of new snow overnight. Sunday should be gorgeous but cold. Then more snow on Monday.

The avalanche danger is significant so a conservative ride is encouraged.

Forecast is as follows:
Tonight: Snow. Low around 3. Wind chill values as low as -20. Breezy, with a west wind between 20 and 29 mph, with gusts as high as 38 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible.

AN AVALANCHE WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THE MOUNTAINOUS AREAS OF WESTERN WYOMING. The general avalanche hazard is HIGH. Up to a foot of new snow and strong winds are loading a snowpack that is unstable on a variety of aspects and slope angles. Warming temperatures are increasing the potential for steep snow covered slopes to fail. Dangerous hard slab avalanches up to five feet in depth are likely to be easily triggered by humans and release naturally. TRAVEL IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN IS NOT RECOMMENDED. THE TETON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE AND SEARCH AND RESCUE WOULD LIKE TO REMIND YOU THAT BACKCOUNTRY RESCUES MAY BE SIGNIFICANTLY DELAYED OR NOT POSSIBLE.

Snow is great!!!!!

To say the least snow is great.... to say the worst trails are absolutely horrible(even the minimal amount we road. Played in untouched meadows all day. The Avy danger is bad though we were around a few small hills that were just begging to be climbed but with the wind loads and avy danger we chose not to.. Visibility has sucked to say the least and reason we have no pictures. Off to a great start though.

Update

It is a beautiful day in Jackson Hole. The next two days should be outstanding for riding. I will try to post some pictures.

The snow is DEEP!!!!! 5 1/2 feet at Togwotee Pass, 5 feet at Brooks Lake. At the ranch, we have 2 feet. The forecast shows snow on Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday. We are hoping that the trails improve over the next 48 hours. I will let you know.

The forecast is the following:
This Afternoon: A 20 percent chance of snow. Partly sunny and cold, with a high near 7. Wind chill values as low as -15. West wind around 11 mph.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around -8. Wind chill values as low as -25. West wind between 8 and 10 mph.

Sunday: Partly sunny and cold, with a high near 10. Wind chill values as low as -25. West southwest wind around 11 mph.

Sunday Night: Increasing clouds, with a low around 0. Wind chill values as low as -20. Southwest wind between 8 and 14 mph.

Monday: Snow, mainly after 11am. High near 12. Breezy, with a west southwest wind between 14 and 21 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Monday Night: Snow. Low around 9. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Tuesday: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a high near 18. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

The avalanche warning is considerable. Riding in avalanche areas is strongly discouraged. We are forecasted for lower temperatures which should help set up the snow.

AN AVALANCHE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE MOUNTAINOUS AREAS OF WESTERN WYOMING. The general avalanche hazard is CONSIDERABLE. Since Wednesday night up to two feet of dense snow has fallen on an unstable snowpack. Dangerous hard slab avalanches up to five feet in depth are likely to be easily triggered on steep slopes by humans and could release naturally. Conservative decisions, combined with excellent terrain evaluation and route finding skills are essential for safe travel in avalanche terrain.

If you don't have a trip planned, consider coming to Wyoming. For those coming and staying somewhere else, stop in for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The snow is deep and the riding will be exceptional.

The general avalanche hazard is CONSIDERABLE. Deep slab instability persists on a variety of aspects. Backcountry travelers venturing into avalanche terrain could trigger these large, dangerous avalanches with slab depths up to five feet. While these slabs are becoming more difficult to trigger, they could still be released by the weight of a single person encountering a weak zone in areas where the snowpack is thin. Yesterday, a snowboarder remotely triggered a slide with crown depths up to 14 inches on a southerly aspect at an elevation of 9,500 feet. Use conservative decision making, careful route finding, and good travel habits. Training and experience are essential for safe travel in avalanche terrain.

Update

Today is WOW!!!!!! We received a foot over night here at the ranch and its still snowing. Togwotee Pass is showing 76" snow depth. We are getting pounded right now and expect it to continue at least through today.

The avalanche warning is HIGH so ride conservatively if riding today. We do anticipate that the warning will drop in the next couple of days. Right now, the forecasters are encouraging caution since it has been a very unusual year at Teton Village. The general avalanche hazard is HIGH. Up to a foot of new snow, strong winds and warming temperatures have created easily triggered soft slabs to two feet in depth on steep, lee slopes. Deeper, hard slabs continue to be triggered in the Angle Mountain area. The new snow will increase the chance of natural or rider triggered deep slides. TRAVEL IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN IS NOT RECOMMENDED. At lower elevations forecasted warm temperatures and rain will increase the chances of slides from roofs or steep areas like road cuts.
