2008/2009 Turpin Meadow Ranch & Togwotee Pass/CD Trail Update

Nice pics! Looks like the trees are where it's at. Looks like they need more snow in the meadows... or just less wind. The wind has been blowing around 40-60 mph here for three days! Ridiculous! Also, all of our snow melted from this heat wave.

Looks like we're all supposed to get more snow this week! :D

Togwotee conditions

Heading out to Togwotee Wednesday. How is the snow and is there any snow in the forcast for the week. Thanks

Update

Good morning to all.

Although, snow flurries are in the forecast beginning on Thursday. This weather has helped set up our base really well. So now we just need more snow. Our snow depths are equal to last year.

The forecast:
Today: Sunny, with a high near 44. West wind between 11 and 14 mph.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 25. West wind around 16 mph.

Expect mostly clear skies above morning valley fog as high pressure remains over the region. Strong temperature inversions will continue today.

Temperature Forecast for 8,000´-9,000´: Rising into the low 40s.
Ridge Top Wind Forecast for 10,000´: Light and variable this morning, then veering to the southwest and increasing to 10 to 20 miles per later in the day.

The general avalanche hazard is MODERATE this morning and will increase to CONSIDERABLE during the day as sunshine and warm temperatures heat the upper portion of the snowpack. Areas of deep slab instability persist in steep, avalanche-prone terrain. Skiers or riders could cross these dangerous hard slabs, which could be up to five feet deep, multiple times before a weak zone is encountered, causing failure of the slope. Snowmobilers choosing to high mark steep bowls and cirques are particularly at risk because they impact the snowpack more deeply and cover a much greater amount of terrain. As the day progresses, surface wet slides will also become possible on steep, sun-affected aspects. Conservative decision making, good travel habits, and the ability to resist peer pressure are all necessary for safe travel in avalanche terrain today.

Update

Today is another beautiful day. It appears that our inversion is starting to break up and the High is moving out. Snow is back in the forecast starting tomorrow with snowfalls average only 2 to 4" until the weekend. Then there is a storm that is developing that may give us significantly more snow. Keep in mind though that the snow is DEEP. The Togwotee Pass Snotel is still showing over 5 feet of snow.

For those looking for riding in February. I have some openings in the middle of the month. Come and visit us!!

The forecast:
This Afternoon: Mostly sunny, with a high near 35. Breezy, with a west southwest wind around 25 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22. West wind between 15 and 17 mph.

Thursday Night: A 40 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 19. West southwest wind between 13 and 18 mph.

Friday: A 40 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 24. West wind between 7 and 10 mph.

The general avalanche hazard is MODERATE today. Old weaknesses persist at the base of the snowpack. In steep avalanche terrain, the possibility continues to trigger dangerous hard slab avalanches in limited but hard to predict areas. The triggering of these slabs will likely require larger loads such as snowmobiles or groups of riders or skiers and will in increase in sensitivity as sunlight and warming soften the snow surface.

I got some conditions email from tog and it gave a weather breakdown for the month... For this past wed, it said there was a low of -9 but a high of 62F!!!! Is this right? There was also one 50 each of the prior two weeks....Didnt realize it was anywhere's near that warm out there...

We were just out there a week based out of Union Pass. The temps were indeed high. Earlier this week (Sun - Wed) it was in the mid 40's to maybe early 50's. I rode without gloves and facemask most of the time. As warm as it was though it didn't cause a ton of melting. The snowpack just settled. That's a lot of base of cold, white snow to warm up and it doesn't happen fast. It did get thinner as the week went on but the difference in snowcover between Sunday and Thursday wasn't that dramatic. Check out my report in this thread.

Update

The good word of the day: SNOWWWWWW!!!!! We are forecasted for up to 2 feet of snow. We already received today 1/2 foot of new powder.

For those that heard that we had 60 degree temperatures. We did not. There was an inversion in the mountains. At the ranch (7,000 ft), we had temperatures of 30 degrees. The top of Lava Mountain had a high temperature of 40 degrees. So no, we did not see temperatures of 60 degrees. Yes, we did have warm temperatures. But this did help set up the snow for our next storms.

The riding next week should be exceptional.
The following is the forecast:
Tonight: Snow. Low around 11. Wind chill values as low as -5. West southwest wind around 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible.

Sunday: Snow, mainly after 11am. High near 16. Wind chill values as low as -5. West southwest wind between 13 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Sunday Night: Snow, mainly before 11pm. Low around -4. Wind chill values as low as -20. South southeast wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Monday: A 20 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 11. Wind chill values as low as -20. South southeast wind around 7 mph.

Monday Night: A 20 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around -2. Calm wind becoming south between 5 and 8 mph.

Tuesday: A 20 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 17.

Tuesday Night: A 20 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 8.

Wednesday: A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 18.

The general avalanche hazard is MODERATE. Areas of unstable snow exist on some steep avalanche prone terrain features. Skiers and riders who venture into steep avalanche terrain and cliff areas could trigger soft surface slabs up to two feet deep or deep hard slabs up to six feet deep. The potential to trigger these slabs will increase as temperatures rise.

Update

Hello from Turpin Meadow Ranch. For those that don't know, we are just 8 miles down the trail from Togwotee Mountain Lodge.
Another beautiful day in paradise. I hope everyone is having a great day in their paradise. The trails and riding is fantastic. For those powder riders, we are set up for our next storm. Our base is solid. Yesterday, I was riding in 1/2 foot of snow on top of our base. (It definitely could be deeper). There is a small chance of snow this afternoon and then nothing in sight. Hopefully, a big storm will hit us soon. Until then, blue skies and gorgeous days.

Forecast:
Today: A 40 percent chance of snow after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 15. Wind chill values as low as -5. West northwest wind between 13 and 16 mph. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

The general avalanche hazard is MODERATE. Skiers and riders who venture onto steep avalanche terrain and cliff areas could trigger surface slabs up to two feet deep or deep hard slabs up to six feet deep on a weak layer of faceted snow near the base of the snowpack. Such a deep hard slab was reported to have occurred Friday afternoon on Lava Mountain where the East face slid to the ground. The trigger for this large, destructive slide is not certain but remaining tracks indicate it could have been from multiple sleds being on the slope at one time. Use caution and assisting others who are stuck in avalanche terrain is never recommended

Ride safe and stop in and see me.
I am just 8 miles down the trail from Togwotee.
