XP owners-Your driveshaft WILL break

whats breaking on the shaft. the old ladys new 146 has 600 miles and no issues other than the stupid gauge board. regeard to 21/45 and added pin weight. Also buddies 154 about same miles with 21/46geari think and same pin weight and these things are unbelievable. no belt issues at all. Blew belts on first ride out before regearing but now they work great. Also put the screen kit on from specialty sleds and that keeps the clutches insanley cool.

Regarding the flatlander XPs, they seem to be pretty good with the exception of the handwarmers and bending S modules. Everything else seems to be more or less isolated to the Summits. I feel bad for the guys having lots of problems. Eerily similar to the Polaris forums in '05. :(

Well boys , Team Industries has the fix for the belts. They have a kit you can but which replaces the stock secondary, shaft, pins, rollers ,weights ,springs ,and gear. I orderd mine today. Hopefully it gets here soon cause this sled is the biggest P.O. S ive bought yet. Thank god its my back up sled !!!!!!!

that's cool, but I don't feel like I should have to spend $675 on my brand new sled for the clutch to work right.
I don't mind too bad buying a clutch kit for $300 with all the mentioned minus the secondary and shaft.

isnt the new belt a bandaid also??

pretty much.....

I started pulling cords at 17 miles and blew the belt at 32. Put a carlisle xs 803 on and now have 110 miles on it. Some pretty deep powder and realy hammeirng on it. stopped all the rubber built up on sheaves. I think I will check the weight and add some this week and hopefully get a gear coming from some one on monday.

I am suprised that the broken driveshaft issue seems to keep surfacing on the mountain sleds but appears to not be coming up as an issue on the flatlander sleds(Renegade & MXZX's). The reason I say this is because I just checked the BRP parts catalog and they all use the same driveshaft assy.(Summit/Renegade/MXZX). Hmmm.....

I run in the flats with a summit, and have some new serious vibration between my toes

Mine broke on new years day at 5,000' on Mt. Saint Helens. I was in a big bowl so no way to tow out. Had to leave it for4 days. Was buried up to the handle bars. Got back to it in white out and heavy winds. Drilled and screwed it so I did not have to put new driveshaft in on mountain. It held til the second hill then the shaft came apart. So I would not recomend a quick fix, Just install the new driveshaft to get it out. I had to borrow one from a friends sled because BRP said the would next day air on WED and it still was not here on Friday. I highly recomend everyone weld their driveshaft. I dropped my sled at the dealer tonight and hopefully the new and improved driveshaft will be in tommorrow. I have to return the one I borrowed so he can weld it . Take a close look at the gear side. It is definetly blueish from some sort of friction weld process. I do not believe it can stand up to the flexing of the sled if you like to ride it. Be careful on those hard right hand side hills!
My sled 2008 Summit XP 163" was delivered on 12-21-07. Build date 11/07 serial # 573. 260 miles before it broke.

Do not wait for the fix. Fix it yourself! It is not worth spending 12 hours on a wind swept mountain installing a driveshaft and then riding 2 sledsout in deep snow.

good luck all,
Bill

i bet, i will be doing the weld before it breaks, wreck a weekend forsure

as for the belt problem it has disapeared since i went to the 803 ultimax as well, now with 300 miles on the belt and it still looks like new

this sled is hands down the best sled i have ever been on, lightyears ahead of the others, just needs to get the bugs out of them

So, does someone really have a good, permanent fix for the driveshaft? I want it fixed now. BRP won't fix it until it breaks. I'm scared to ride like I normally do; Far from the trail and truck.

I have a couple ride on mine with the home-weld job. No problems. Done with the shaft and skid still in the sled. Its hard to have a good, permanent fix until we have a few thousand miles on them. Who knows if the welded holes will last. I can't see any problem with trying it, unless you use too much heat.

Here are a couple I found on Dootalk

Drill 4-6 holes through the shaft to the end piece that slides in then weld up the holes.

I am not sure I would do a full weld around it like pictured, I think the heat would be bad................but I have had a few captn and cokes..............lol

I am leaving mine alone, if it goes one more reason to lemon law the sucker..........

Here's a picture of a guys sled who's shaft broke on Mt. St Helens. It was 4 days till he could get it out.
I guess some of them are welded, If mine isn't, It will be.

i love the brp mentality....we know it will break, but we wont fix it untill it does, even though it may KILL or INJURE you in the process, and mabye destroy your sled. imagine climbing a nasty chute when it goes, no place to turn around...etc

imagine a boat company telling you that...."sir, we know your hull will develop a catostrophic leak and most likely sink with you aboard. but we will be happy to fix it if you bring the boat back to us if you survive and recover the boat....good luck with your fishing..."

or mabye your home builder ..."we are sorry about the support beams in your house, but it is just not worth it to fix them before they crush you while your sleeping. We promise, if you survive, we will build you a new, stronger house!"

autos get recalled for safety reasons, why do sleds seem to slip under the wire so often. they recalled em for the leaky gas tanks and throttles that may stick, because those are dangerous? doesnt anybody think this is a dangerous problem?

just like in 07, they knew the crank bearings had issues along with a few others, but they wont fix them all untill each one breaks. and you know they had problems, i 4 cornered both pistons in my summit, and they are giving up a whole short block. i see known and documented engine failures just as dangerous as leaky gas tanks...its not like we can just sprout wings and fly back to the truck. most of us ride farther in 30 minutes than we could walk in an entire day, not to mention in 5+ feet of snow!

i wish i was a lawyer sometimes.

2 154 Everests lost drive shafts today. Both with just over 400 miles. My dealer has 3 more in getting fixed now. Driveshafts came off backorder a couple days ago. Mine is getting welded this week.
