Xp oil cap

I have on 08 Xp and have noticed that the oil cap is leaking. If I screw the cap all the way down it starts to cross thread on the last turn were it should seal is anyone else having this problem.

Over on dootalk somebody makes an aulminum insert that slips inside the tank opening to make rigid enough to seal.

Good Luck

my dealer gave me a few caps for the tanks, that worked better but still had leaking, most recently they replaced the entire tank under warranty and no leaking problems. No if i could just figure out a way to keep the clutches from getting too hot I will be a happier guy.

There is a guy on doo talk that is selling inserts for the oil tank. Put that on with a Rev cap and no more leaks. I had mine on it side and upside down once over the weekend and no leaking.

I will try and did up the post on doo talk.

changing out skis and had sled on its side, leaked out half tank of oil. new tanks are available that have an extra thread. i beleive that the 08 had only three threads.

I had a few leaking oil caps, when I took my sled in for all the updates one of the things they did was completely replace the oil res, it appears to be a slightly different design and hasn't leaked a drop. Dealer said it was the threading on the res not the cap. Should be a warranty issue.

Take it to your dealer. I asked mine to replace the leaking cap, they replaced the whole tank as part of an update.

Don't tighten too much and it will not leak, crank it and it deforms the tank and leaks. Prove it by adding tubing to the vent line and blow in it an listen for the leak. It stops if you put the lid on right.

Here's a cheaper fix that solves the problem. On my sled it was the tank that was the problem. The filler neck where the cap should seal was not flat on the top. If yours is leaking take a look at it, maybe lay a piece of something flat on it, scrap wood/plexiglass, whatever. and you will see what i mean. I wrapped a piece af 80 grit sand paper around a scrap 2x4 (crude I know but it worked great) and sanded away on the top surface until it was flat. Hasn't leaked a drop since. I rolled up a rag and stuffed it in the filler neck to keep the dust from entering tank. Fixing your own sled with no trip to the dealer and for zero dollars PRICELESS!:D

All good ideas here.... But one more thing that I have found. If you fill your tank to full,,, it will leak. I fill mine just above 3/4. Is enough for a long ride, and doesn't leak..

Leaky oil cap

Agreed on the over tightening, just tighten snug and it won't leak, 3500 k no leaks, original tank and cap. Make too tight it deforms the tank and it leaks.

Heres a cheaper easier way to do it.. >> Use tin foil and a rubber band <<

I found out the first time I got stuck on a steep hill it leaked like crazy, and when it was upside down for sure. Just put some tin foil and a rubber band on it and use your money for a SWEET vent kit..

Happy trails !!
