i may have an oppertunity to move to the casper/ sheriden/ gillette area from southern colorado
hows the sledding, economy, country living, schools?any info on anything would be great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gillette is booming, in everything. I work in the energy field as an electrical tech/ calibrator.

Sheridan is getting to be the same way. If I had a choice, id do Sheridan, nicer place in my opinion, tough on housing though

Ok so which area are you gonna move to? Those three towns are all about 150 miles apart from each other.

Sledding would be best up in Sheridan. Big Horns are right there ... I am not sure how the economy up in Sheridan is, I think it's mainly agricultural based ... Gillette it's all about mining and coal-bed methane wells, Casper is kinda the same way.

Casper is an oilfield town, Gillette's more of a mining town.

Sheridan's about 15,000 people, Gillette's about 30,000 and some change, Casper's about 50,000 ...

You can sled on Casper Mountain, but it's not really much to brag about ... you gotta be having a really good winter for there to be enough snow to really go anywhere off trail up there and when and if you do the chances of you being on somebody's land are like probably %90 ... It's not really a "wildernessey" area up there, it's basically become a Suburb of Casper. The one good thing about Casper is, its a decent town if you can stand the wind, you can ride 15 minutes from town on Casper mountain just to put around mainly, and then the Big Horns are 2.5 hours north, Snowies are 2.5 hours south ... Togwotee is about 5 hours northwest if I remember right.

I think most people who live in Gillette ride the Horns, maybe they go to black hills SD too ... I don't realy know much about the sledding situation in gillette.

I grew up in Casper and usually am there a week out of every month ... if you have any more questions about it let me know.

Sheridan-housing prices have tripled in ten years, 2 coal mines(both in MT) and about a million coal bed methane holes. Houses going up everywhere(afordable housing projects $180,000-240,000). Lots of new construction at $400,000 plus. The mayor and city council provide weekly entertainment.

Big Horns are close, plenty of outdoor recreation available, if you need anything Billings is only 1.5 hours away. Good school system!

Just a few rambling thoughts.

Gillette, lived there fro 2yrs. Not much for entertainment except the bars which seems like someone is always jumping somebody. Housing was expensive when I lived there from 01-03. Loved working there but for me there wasn't squat to keep me entertained. Usually people drove to Casper 1hr, Sheridanbout 2hr, Billings , or Rapid City 2.5hrs for shopping. In the winter we liked to drop at 4 corners after driving about 1.5-2hrs to the Black Hills. For the BigHorns we rode once out of Redgrade but most commonly Bear Lodge up by Burgis Junction. Never did snow enough when I lived in Gillete to ride around town. So for sledding I didn't care for the fact you had to spend at least 2-4hrs of your day staring out from behind the glass of a pickup before and after you ride. Might be normal for some but I grew up riding out of my yard.

Don't move to Gillette, you'd have to live in the same town as Nate. Not to mention being branded a triple c'ser :D

FWIW, Casper or Buffalo would be my two choices. Sheridan is nice and all, but full of rich bastard greenies, especially some of the housing developments on the west end of town. Granted, its been a few years since I was in Sheridan last things could have changed.

my question is what would be bringing you to the area? as far as sledding goes sheridan would be the best just because you would be close to the hill but casper isnt half bad if you can stand the wind... i grew up in riverton and casper would be 3.5 hrs to the snow @ Togwotee!:beer;

I have lived in all of those towns except for Gillette.

Sheridan is good, but it is hard to find a place to live.

IMO laramie and rawlins have casper beat out for wind.

heheh I lived in Rawlins for 6 months while my Dad was paving a road there.....that town is the worst town in Wyoming.

Buffalo is a great town, I grew up there, but there isn't much to do on your days off during the summer....you might check out Sheridan for things to do.
