Why are we bankrupt?

Someone mentioned illegal immigration as a major contributing factor, or did you miss that?

Actually that is a minor contributor. and it is the only thing talked about on this thread, which makes me ask about the title of it.

Ollie, if you think the election of Obama was a major contributor, put the pipe down.

Free hand outs. The continuing expansion of the welfare state./QUOTE] well the money still stays within the borders...

this is larger than a trillion dollar problem, not a minute one in the millions.

No one even mentioned the sub prime lending fiasco. which IMO is a much larger than any mentioned on this thread.

The debt is not within....well it is in a sort of way.

The U.S. owes other countries, like China, Japan, or in other words... They own the U.S.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_public_debt

Like it or not, America, (Canada included) has to be less reliant on other countries for products, and energy. Especially energy.

It is time for alternative energy, if we could harness the sun's energy that hits the earth for 10 minutes, it would be enough to last a year.
Hydrogen, is also a must.

You guys want cheap stuff, you get it from China, Japan... you don't want to accept low wages, so you outsource. If you think of it, you get a lot of cheap labour from these countries.... kinda like hiring a mexican on your own soil, only a lot worse.

Ya know. I went back and read my last post 4 times.
I didn't see Obama's name anywhere in there.
I said Politicians, as in ALL of them.
They have driven our industrial base out of the country with taxes and EPA regulations that cost companies millions a year and don't do anything but force them to move. They set minimum wages instead of letting the market set the wages. However, the market WON"T set the wages at a living wage because the government refuses to do anything about illigal alliens who will work for pennies. A free market system only works when you have a level playing field. As long as companies are allowed and even encouraged to hire illigals they can undercut the companies playing by the rules.

As for energy.
We have more oil reserves in the US than all of the middle east combined.
The politicians won't allow us to get it. They chose to FORCE us to spend billions on alternative energy that is YEARS away from reality.
Everyone talks about electric.
Great idea.
Won't happen.
Why?
We don't have the ability to generate enough electricity to power the existing loads, let alone a few hundred million electric cars.
Even if we did have the capacity to generate the electricity (be it solar, wind, coal or nucluer) we don't have the power distrubution system to carry the load.
until the politicians WAKE up and allow us to get the oil we already have we will continue to pay the terrorist to attack us. I do think Obama is correct when he says he wants to invest in the infastructure of this country. now we have to see what his definition of infastructure is. If it's more hand outs and freebies, we will continue to go downhill. If he actually upgrades our electrical, water, sewer and road ways, then we have a chance to bring our systems up to par.

hum, I was just thinking.
Illigal immigration IS a major contributor to the money problem.
Why?
Think of it.
How much does it cost to put their kids thru schools?
To give them free medical treatment?
The increased urban sprawl.
The increase in road use.
Electical use, sewer use, roads and bridges.
Social security, medicaid, medicare etc
Lower wages as a result of the criminals.
how much does it cost to investigate the crimes they commit.
To house them in jails.
The list goes on and on.

It costs hundreds of billions a year.
So yes, Illigal immigration is a huge part of it.
If you don't think so, we would be happy to ship a few million of them your way and you can witness it yourself.

Yes.

Efficiency in solar/wind/hydro (the ones the envirotards just *love*) cannot produce enough to make it a worthwhile investment. They have their place, running small operations that would be more expensive to get on the "grid".

I have faith in nuclear, but good luck getting one of those built in this country.

Ollie, which other politician would you be referring to now?? please...

You also say the national debt is the reason the U.S. is bankrupt... well that sure pinpoints it..

Few hundred million of cars?? Uhh ok... I figure if 30% of the cars sold in 20 years would be an accomplishment. Remember there are only 305 million people in the U.S. Who needs a gasser to make a predictable commute to and from work?
alternative energy is making an appearance in europe, as matter of fact it is about 10 years ahead of the U.S. It might not be feasible right at this moment, but with more research it will. Look at how far batteries have come for instance...LED lights, ipod touch, high efficiency furnaces. lightweight composites. If you lose faith in Technology, then you are lost.

in a technology standpoint, look at the modern television. Remember how much the first 52 inch LCD television costed when it came out a few years ago?? look at the price today... hell they almost throw them in with a box of cereal these days..

You guys are thinking of a total turnover, that will never happen. There will always be the diesel trucks, trains, and ships. Gassers will be still around.. they are needed. If total reliability on fossil fuels is your answers, then you are in the stone age. May as well crawl in the cave with Bin Laden.

You will always see oil used everywhere, plastics, fuel, clothing, building materials.. Just think how affordable gas and diesel would be when the need goes down lower and lower? ;)

Well lets see. I believe if you open the doors to either the House or the Senate you will see LOADS of politicians. Do you really think Obama makes all the decisions? The house and senate load bills with riders that don't stand a chance of being passed on their own. It's called pork for a reason

You also say the national debt is the reason the U.S. is bankrupt... well that sure pinpoints it..

It does. All you have to do is see what share of the dept is because the politicians raided the SS accounts

ok, I exagerated, I'll give ya that one

you say they are 10 years ahead of us. So what do we do for the next 10 years? plus the fact they are still in the exact same boat we are.

No, I am saying we have our own. Drill it, pump it and use it WHILE WE DO THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPEMENT to span the 10 - 15 years it will take to make some of the alternative energy viable. Believe it or not, you don't have to look at it as strictly one or the other. You can be doing both at the same time.

You will always see oil used everywhere, plastics, fuel, clothing, building materials.. Just think how affordable gas and diesel would be when the need goes down lower and lower? ;)

Something else. As i said earlier.
It will take years to upgrade the power grid and distrubution lines to make the electricity available.

We need to bridge from now to an alternative.
To say, To Bad, deal with it. Is unacceptable.
We have the means to become self reliant while we search for an alternative energy source now, why wait?

Sad state of America at this time, enter illegally and get all the bene's but don't try and follow the law or your elimated. I feel for you it was quite enjoyable to help Peter come over here and work hard and enjoy the things we had to offer, he loved hunting and fishing he could never do in Austria and he was appreciative of what he had here, he was able to have his brothers come over for trips and show them what he had here and was a hero in his home town of Linze. Swampy:D:D:beer;

You are correct on employers paying under the table. But employers are as much to blame as anyone.
I also fully agree with the second half of your statement. If you are an American, you must fulfill ALL your obligations as one, just as I do.

Now the only thing I will say differently, is you cannot Sponsor someone like you could then, or I would have.....
See the thing is, I have tried to Sponsor an immigrant. I tried to jump through any and every hoop I could find. But unless they had a degree, or could prove that they had something to give that an American could not give, it was not going to happen. My legal counsel basically told me it's a lost cause.

To drill, it is just not that easy.
You would have to increase your refining, which could take a years of development. I have seen this first hand, to develop a refinery is not so easy. The jobs would be short lived, because you eventually will be forced to switch anyways. billions upon billions of dollars for new refineries, pipelines, rigs, why not put that dough to development of alternative energy. eventually with time it become more attainable and affordable as a whole unit.
Old boy syndrome is just that.. old.

Like it or not, you will be forced to switch, sorry it is an inconvenience to you. you can biotch and complain all you want...
The research is done, there are also many new ways of developing hydrogen and if the market is big enough, it will take off and get more affordable. If you let someone else develop it, you will be the customer, and be left behind.
I saw this myself when CNC machinery came into woodworking. the sooner you develop your system, the better of a head start you had, the more work you got, the more competitive you became.... the later you get into the game, the longer it takes to "catch up"

There are investors in Europe that would jump at the chance to invest, you will see this will be more common. If the U.S. does not step up to do it, someone else will and even more profits go overseas.
