Important Trump Slaps Tariffs On Canada, Mexico And China

When I cross a border it's the country I am entering that stops me from brining in things I am not supposed to. How are Canada and Mexico supposed to plug holes with the American border letting things pass into their own country? Are American citizens returning home going to be happy if they have to pass through a Canadian border stop before even getting to the American border stop? Also most fentanyl is made in China or made from pre-cursor chemicals from China so why is Trump being easy on China, I thought there were supposed to be the bad guys? At least they were during his first term.

not denying that fentanyl is being made here in Canada but to say we are the problem for it, come on. We have a population of 35millionish people, USA has 350millionish. Law of averages says USA is producing more in house than we are. And valid point made by Bnorth, Its USA border guards that let you into the states not Canadian or Mexican

President Donald Trump on Monday agreed to pause the implementation of planned tariffs on imports from Canada for at least 30 days, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

The pause was announced in a tweet by Trudeau hours after Trump and Mexico’s president said Trump would pause for one month planned tariffs on imports from Mexico.

Trump on Saturday said he would impose 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, and 10% tariffs on goods imported from China. Trump had also planned to impose a 10% tariff on energy resources from Canada.

Trudeau in his tweet said, “I just had a good call with President Trump,” and suggested that the pause on tariffs was in response to Canada’s agreement to target the flow of the deadly opioid fentanyl across the border into the United States.

Trump’s pause on tariffs on Mexican imports likewise came after Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said she would immediately send 10,000 soldiers to the U.S. border to prevent drug trafficking, fentanyl in particular, from Mexico.

Trudeau said Canada had made new commitments “to appoint a Fentanyl Czar,” among other measures.

“Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together,” Trudeau wrote.

Trump soon after followed up with a post on Truth Social.

“Canada has agreed to ensure we have a secure Northern Border, and to finally end the deadly scourge of drugs like Fentanyl that have been pouring into our Country, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans, while destroying their families and communities all across our Country.”

“I am very pleased with this initial outcome, and the Tariffs announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30 day period to see whether or not a final Economic deal with Canada can be structured,” Trump wrote. “FAIRNESS FOR ALL!”

This is breaking news. Please refresh for updates.

Why do you care. He calls trump trumpy after he tells people they're delusional. He calls Trump trumpy and then tells you what book to get at library. Maybe if you want somebody to listen, don't come off as a moron.
How did the Dow do today?
War in Ukraine ended yet?
You didn't hurt my feelings and I'm not calling you a moron. All I'm getting at is there is no point in giving him the time of day.
I had a nice response typed up but then I deleted it as I figured I was waisting my breath and went sledding in one of Canada's incredible national parks.
Why don't you look up the story of the Pollux & Truxton to learn how neighbors and allies respond to tragedy ...maybe a bit before your time (check out biography of Lanier Phillips - a real American to be emulated and not a moron like trumpy) ...you can also look at something more recent like 9/11 when your own planes couldn't land - maybe next time we'll send you a bill .... That's what trumpy would do ...

Next trumpy will tell you he never had to pay for sex ;) and you'll believe him ...

He's a little man with a little mind ...

You're all over the map. The only thing you show is your complete hate for Trump. So much so that you come on a snowmobile forum to spew about trumpy instead of your snowmobile.

What does Ukraine have to do with this?
What does sex have to do with this? If he paid for sex, that is the cheapest sex you will ever get in your life.
9/11 was almost 24 years ago. Buying 1 drink doesn't make up for the whole night.
I also bet the dow is just fine.

Great - so what the **** has Canada got to do with it ...your little man is the one picking the fight ....

A big part of the tariffs is the implication is that our neighbors aren't doing enough to stop trafficking, drugs, etc. that impacts the US as long as the perpetrators don't cause much trouble along the way. There's no doubt Mexico is guilty of that, although you could argue they're just trying to keep their heads above water. Canada is a different situation, but also presents an opportunity for illicit actors because of so much land and border with relatively few to police it. The US is left asking, and to some degree pressuring, Mexico and Canada to police that. Relying just on stopping it at the border is likely to yield limited results, and obviously there's not a lot US law enforcement can do past our borders.

China is supplying a lot of the raw materials - no question - and I think that's being addressed too, but that's more of a long-term challenge. The previous administration just avoided that confrontation. China has definitely sweetened the pot every way they can with those in power (both parties), making it doubly-difficult to address that problem. I hope to see a reckoning with China that ends our dependence on them without destroying either economy or escalating to military conflict. Personally, I avoid buying Chinese-made goods where possible and intend to continue that as long as their government continues tyrannizing and enslaving their people.

As for tariffs in general, I think it's important to remember that the US federal government largely lived off tariffs for the first half of its life, and I'd argue for a return to that. The idea of free trade with the likes of China should never have been entertained, although it's just as sad that average people didn't stick to their guns and refuse to buy goods produced by Communist slave labor as it is that politicians greased the skids for their own profit. Also, we've never really had free trade with China: they manipulate their currency to make it easier to export than to import goods.

It's true that tariffs are a tax paid by the consumer, except you have to remember that there's the option of not paying it - if or when a domestically-produced is available. Done right, tariffs help protect potentially critical manufacturing bases while also allowing competition. Too little, and you end up with the situation we're in where far too many critical things (like life-saving drugs) are made in China; too much and you stifle mutually beneficial trade and enable domestic profiteering. I believe the ideal path forward is massive cuts to federal bureaucracies and entitlements coupled with the elimination of income taxes in favor of tariffs and other, mostly consumption-based taxes. I'm thinking around 10% for most countries, but much higher for a few. Some people like to get people spun up about prices going up, but if that brings manufacturing and jobs back here, it means more money stays here, so there's more money to be made (and go right to your pocket, if income taxes go down or away). Of course, there is the sticking point that you have to work for it...
