Whos still riding the Mountain Viper?

Hey guys glad I found this thread. I have a chance to pick up a 02 700 Yamaha Viper. Has 1500 miles on it and is stock. I am trading him an 02 raptor for it (maybe) I look at it on friday. He has a 230cc yamaha as well that is for the kid that he is adding.
Anyway on the viper how do they do in powder? Get stuck much? What is the stock track on it? like a 121" or so? Also how do you lengthen the track and tunnel do you have to snatch a track and skid off another machine? thanks Jeff

I love my Yammi Mnt Viper, which difers some from the standard Viper, which u are looking at. Standard Viper had 121" track with 1" paddles. Some 2004 models had 1.25" paddles, which helped. They are a trail sled unless modded with rail extensions and tweaked to fit larger paddles underneath. Or replacing the skid, but that's not necessary. Look to Totallyyamaha.com on the 2 stroke side and search this -- its been done a lot with great results. Basically creating a Mnt. Viper with aftermarket parts.

Now a Mnt. Viper came 144" inch track w/ 2" lugs stock. Very reliable sled and pretty good in deep snow conds even stock. With a little tweaking, the machine really comes alive -- installing triple pipes, new head, better skis to name a few make the machine run with 800cc machines easy. I have actually gone overboard modding mine but I just love the machine.

If your goal is a Viper for powder, you may want to just look for a Mnt. Viper and save some time. However, being that the sled you may buy has low miles and seems to be in great shape, maybe pick it up and do some modding for a longer track and 2" paddles. For powder you will want to do that....

Good luck

Mike

Thanks I think I can get him to toss in the 230 into the deal as well. Off hand what would be a decent price on that sled? it is an 02 700 Viper, 1500 miles new track mainly stock. He wants to trade me that for my 02 raptor that was valued by yamaha of Fort Collins at 4000. I was asking 3500 for it. Since it has Elka Shocks on it. Any way I think it will work out. Thanks Jeff

Update. Turns out the owner before him was his uncle. He took the sled to the dealer and had them put a 144" track under it instead of the 122" Also took the front end off a mnt viper cause it was 3 inches narrower. For going through the trees. Had that put on it. Anyway it has 1600 miles which I don't think is alot.

Just bought an 03 Viper MTN last week. It's all set-up for riding out west. I live in MN and it's gonna be torture for the next 4 months :( It has speedwerx tripple pipes and head, hauck clutch, v-force 3's, mildly ported, FLY handlebars, lefty throttle, etc.....

So how many miles are on that one you just bought?

So I think I got a decent deal. My raptor for a 02 viper with 1600 miles. And I paid 1550 for a 03 mountain lite 500 with 762 miles. Thats not a bad deal is it? thanks Jeff

It has 1700 miles on it. Sounds like a decent deal you got...

Good deal now,,, what are we going to sacrafice to the snow gods? Sacrafice a ford pinto? Or does it have to be 4 wheel drive, Oh a Suzuki Samuri We can sacrafice one of those.

A stock Mnt. Viper had about 117 or so HP (115 -high teens) reliably. Triple pipes added probably 25 or so HP (SLP claimed 33 HP increase, but that's a pie in the sky figure I think). Triple pipes are sort of mandatory equipment, but are an easy install. They really liven uip the machine --- you really notice and appreciate them. I figure I run 145 - 148 HP reliably on mine, but lots of modding to get there.

Man there are some real steals to be had on these things lately. I think anything less than $2,500 is a great price. It sounds like bopth of you got great deals.

I agree I have always liked the power bands on pretty much all Yamaha products I have ridden. I use to work in a bike shop, I have to say never had a complaint about being under powered.

I have a 02 Viper (Spring ordered) with an 03 Mtn tunnel and an 09 Nytro XTX skid under it. Drivers are 8 tooth extros running a ripsaw (hope to switch to a backcountry). It has a BOSS highrise flattop (6 inch rise), about 8 inch of handlebar riser pivoted way forward, and Yamaha Mtn skis with Ohlins up front. I really like this sled now. It could use more power but it is the smoothest 2 stroke I have ever run. While riding the 2010 demo Yamahas last year, I couldn't wait to get back on my sled. Now closing in on 10,000 miles.

The one downside is no wind protection in frigid weather if you blaze down a trail. I have no idea how to overcome this.

Has anyone tried the little add-on windshield extensions?

Course you Mtn guys probably don't ride the trail for that long. But here in Michigan you have to trail ride a ways to get to the off-trail riding.

Well you could get a pair of old ski's and make a small trailer. Put your eskimo suit on it. Lock it to a tree when you get to where you want to ride? thats what I think I will do. Have a top on it so you can lock it with extra gas in it .
