Who has lost a D8 motor with a PCV? DNT or SLP MAP?

IMO the single best thing you can do to improve your chances is to add a PCV.
There are just to many little bugs with this motor setup, but fueling it really helps. There is a mid range area that will give a 17.0 air fuel ratio (extremely lean) and the top end has been consistantly rich with numerous remaps. You can make more reliable HP with a PCV than with a pipe.

However, as we have seen the inevitable can still happen. A good warm up is always a good idea no matter what motor. And as you asked, a little of this :pray2: surely wouldn't hurt either.

Here is a thread with some more ideas. [/QUOTE]

thefullmonte,

Thanks for thread link more good stuff! so far I would say that a PCV seems to improve your chances of not melting down. Not sure by how much. Kinda funny(not really)but the more I read the more I see how desperate D8 are to find a fix. I hope that someone doesn't tell us that putting water in are tank will help. I think some owners would try it. Hell I might if it works.:face-icon-small-dis

I agree with Monte, I think the biggest single thing on any 800 cfi is the pcv to avoid the polaris lean fuel maps. With that being said it only helps to reduce a lean burn down failure. But eventually as the out of tolerance looser then it should be polaris's update head, pistons, and jug continue to wear everyone will expierence a failure.

So far I see and believe that the PMS Polaris slightly sized rounder or wider piston and the extended length piston with the jug shim and longer bolts looks to be a long term repair but it is less then 1 year old from what I understand and some like the wiseco pistons and some dont but it may indeed prove to be the fix? I have had this kit installed in my sled or engine and things seem very promising so far and it runs stronger and sounds better then ever before but only time will tell but so far so good and for the time being I am happy and satisfied.

From what I see with some of the guys on the forum here that have all ready updated there pistons like Monte & Skibreeze who just lost a crank have not had continous piston tolerance problems bt sticking to the out of tolerance spec. engine parts that polaris has been pushing.

I also think a pretty full engine warm up before you ride your sled will help avoid additional wear or partial cold seezes which are terrible on these engines and yes there are people that are trying to scare sell gimmicks to us 800 cfi owners for $300 to make some quick money for maybe a $50 plastic kit that promises to make your sled make more power, last longer, and help to avoid cold seizes but only run at higher temps where it has been proven that those temps make less power but could be a small band aid by heating up and expanding the jug more which could lead to less scoring but once again a looser motor that will fail sooner then later.

robertlaumann, Please let us know what happened, did you lose the top end or the bottom end? I have heard of a guy who lost his top end due to part of a reed pedestal coming off and into his motor from the V force reeds but I have not heard any more that not that it matters since it cant be undone now! If you lost the top end you may want to possibly consider the fix from pmspolaris.com. Good luck and when you know what happened please let us know.

09 D8
SLP pipe & Y
Custom air intake
MBRP can
PCV//SLP map

Sled ran for 1,800 mi lost motor, all new motor and went down in 300 miles same mods.

For us it's not the map I think SLP's is the best with the early flash. Problem is the motor itselt.

Going out tonight with same mods on new motor and PMS kit. The motor sounds wicked now, very tight... Hope she pans out.

How many of these miles were run without the PCV??

I'm going to use my 09 D8 as the PCV test mule 100% stock (except PCV). Polaris just put a new create motor in it. I will see how long it lasts with a PCV and Jims map. This engine has not been run without the PCV on it. I bet I got a 50/50 chance that I will make it over a 1000 miles. One good thing is that I have a extended warrenty through Zurich. So if it goes maybe I'll get some help. I wish when they replaced the engine they would have put a 10 instead on a 09 motor.

You may have actually gotten a better head out of the deal. If it is a crate motor I would be surprised if it isn't a 2010 though. I would think anything like that would be fully updated at this point.

Adobe-al just thought I would let you know how much I enjoyed riding with you that day after your sled blew up. It was the only time I have been able to keep up!

You have had 3 weeks to practice while mine was in the shop. So it should be game on now! Is the throttle on the right or the left? I can't remember it's been so long since I riden! I sure hope thefullmonte is correct and I have a 2010 motor!!

Im Pretty sure I just lost the top half again im praying the bottom too but who knows. Its weird that you say that with the reeds because I just replaced my petals on them because the last ones got ate to ****. whats the fix from pmspolaris? I still have warranty on it so I dropped it off at the dealer today. They said Should be done by thurs if all goes well!

Putting 2010 motor would be the right thing to do. But we are dealing with Polaris. And it seems that they must have a lot of 08-09 create motors on hand. So I'm sure I got the same old crap! Well I had my hopes up for a little while!

suposedly when doing the update my dealer found a crack in the bottom of my cylinder. replaced with the 2010 & updated pistons and head. sled doesnt run bad but it sure doesnt rip. my sled is an 09 d800. I know he didn't replace the case.

This is the most depressing Polaris thread to date. :face-icon-small-sad And there's been a ton of depressing Polaris threads the last 5 years. What a joke. :face-icon-small-con

robertlaumann, feel free to see the snowest link below about the fix and the polaris dealership that makes and sells this product is www.pms.polaris.com
This link should answer all most all of your questions but if your still under warranty why spend your money until your out of warranty unless your tired of the melt downs and want to be done with them from this time forward. good luck with your repairs, I heard that the 800 cfi pistons are on back order?

http://www.snowestonline.com/forum/showthread.php?t=245510

again please let us know what happened with your motor and what the dealer tells you.

Dealer here told me that they were backordered until Feb 18th.
