Whittier Tunnel Closure

I was on the loaner IQR and we didn't drop all the way into Blackstone. I don't have the FS number on me, Jesse was the one who talked to the Police and relayed the info to us.

Whittier was sick. No tickets but aparently the FS said today was the last day. According to the Whittier Police, if enough sledders call the FS telling them to keep it open (there is TONS of snow) they might extend it. It easily has another weekend before vegetation even starts to show. So call the FS!!!

Glacier District Office (Girdwood): 907-783-3242
Cordova District Office: 907-424-7661
Seward District Office: 907-224-3374
Anchorage Supervisor’s Office: 907-743-9500

Open or closed?

Per call just now to Glacier District Office (Girdwood): 907-783-3242 the forest service land above Whittier is still open and their website will be updated to reflect this later this afternoon. The key here is what the City of Whittier says as they own the land so it is their call. The FS property begins about half way down along Blackstone Bay. Their is also a State easement that goes up behind the Begich tower should the C of W close their land, but the FS keep theirs open. Don't count on this though, and ranger Matt Murphy's office tries to coordinate their effort with the C of W.

I have a call into the C of W to get their status but could only leave a recorded message asking for a return call.

I called Glacier District Office (Girdwood): 907-783-3242 and they said, "call whittier offices @ 907-472-2327 "

I then called the Whittier offices and they told me "whittier is closed because the Forest service ranger they have on hand closed chugach state park and told them to close as well..Whittier doesnt want to go against them," or at least that's what they said.

The guy I talked to agreed there is plenty of snow for snowmachines. He said he is going to try to get to the bottom of this and call me back.

"He called me back and He said he spoke with everyone (FS and O o W)it is open, sorry for the missunderstandings, they will keep it open through the week untill next weekend!"

The rest of the story...

Yep, Becky at C of W confirmed it is open and should be for a while yet. At my request she said she would list an update on the city's web page.

The man in charge of making the call is the Chief of Public Safety Dave Skofield. His cell # is 575-5598.

Have fun, be respectful, and haul out your trash please.

Jeff

Thanks for getting the word out caleb. I was surprised when the cop called me monday and said its open and up to them on when to close it. I guess there was some confusion between police and the forest service as to who makes the call. Barring any crazy weather he told me we should be good for a couple of weeks. The phone calls worked, that cop is cool (didnt think I would ever say that), lets just pick up our trash when done and ride into june.

i'm leavin anchorage in an hour... hopefully see some of u down there. Taking the XP - as my renegade needs an idler wheel :(
