Whittier Tunnel Closure

Not sure as I stayed in the harbor. Last day in 08 was May 28th. Not as much snow this year even though March brought 126 inches of the white stuff. They are blasting the rock above the road today....hopefully it works out!

Well I will be damned, looks like I will go get my car this friday. Email the sent about a hr ago.

Hello, Justin –

Beginning this Friday, we’ll have a limited re-opening of the highway, as follows

· Single lane traffic will be escorted through the slide area by pilot car and will continue on a daily basis until normal two-lane traffic is re-established.
<LI class=MsoNormal style="COLOR: #4f81bd; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1">There will be two daily 2-hour road openings – 5:00am to 7:00am, and 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm. <LI class=MsoNormal style="COLOR: #4f81bd; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1">All fees through the Whittier Tunnel will be waived for this weekend – Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Normal tunnel fees will be re-instated beginning Monday morning.
The current shuttle train service, provided in cooperation with the Alaska Railroad, will be continued until further notice. Free passage for the shuttle will also continue through this weekend. Beginning Monday, a fee structure will be in place.
We are targeting mid-month for re-establishment of normal two-way traffic. Look to the website for up to date reports. And let me know if you need anything further.

Sooooooo... if you guys can get up and at 'em really early Fri/Sat/Sun... you can hit the 5-7am block into Whittier and come out between 7:30 & 9:30pm ~ makes for a long day in there, but they are waiving the toll to go through the tunnel this weekend only... BUT I am sure there will be quite the line both ways.

Don't know the area either. But I'm off all this week, so if ya find a guide....I'd be up for one last ride!:beer;:D

i can't believe no one has posted pictures or conditions yet. I haven't made it down yet, every day i was planning on going the weather was supposed to be rainy - nothing worse then getting stuck in whittier for 13.5 hrs with no boat, rain, and no way out.

Has anyone been? Is it even open? Did they get pounded like last winter?

Anyone know when the tunnel is gonna return to its 'normal' schedule?

The tunnel into Whittier is supposed to resume normal summer schedule starting Friday at NOON... soooooo for those of ya wanting to go on Sunday afternoon ;) you won't have to get up so early after all :D
