whats your worst accident

One that scared me the most was on my KTM 380, I was riding on some hay field that we'd built a MX track on. It had big natural rollers we could air off in top gear WFO...not much height but lots of distance.

ANyways I was in top gear just kinda lugging off the rollers, maybe 1/2 throttle nothing serious, but on the last roller a gopher had dug a hole in the clay soil and hardned. At the bottom of the roller my suspension was pretty close to bottom out from the G's and unloaded right when I kit the "kicker"...It catapulted the rear way high on my bike, I was trying to grab another gear and pin the throttle but I was in top gear, and running against the rev limiter wasn't enough to bring the rear back down.

I landed on my front tire and pile drived myseld head first into that hard clay hay field. I did the whole sucking for air thing for what seemed like 3 hours then lay still trying to access what damage I had done to my neck and spine, my buddy was all wanting to help me get up I had to tell him to back away and not touch me.

I bruised both my collar bones from the bottom of the helmit and broke the visor off. I had a 'kink' in my back for the rest of the summer but amazingly I came out of it injury free.

goog thing I'm crazy flexable, folks I went thru PTE with called me gumbo...I think it saved my azz

moral of THIS story is to stretch your muscles and joints, it'll help minimize your injurys.

Ages ago hit a single barb wire riding at night on a frozen river, the wire went through 2 layers of the roll up collar on my jacket and cut my neck before I could throw myself backwards off of the sled, my buddy who was beside me got jerked backwards off his sled, hit the ice with the back of his helmet (which then came off because he never strapped it) his head hit the ice a second time and smashed his front teeth, haven't had much interest in riding at night since. Riding in the Black Hills a bunch of us came down out of the trees into what I thought was a big smooth meadow, after I grabbed a bunch of throttle on the old Blizzard 9500 , passing everything in sight at about 80mph I suddenly realized I was coming up on a winding creek, I launched off of the side of it and went head on into the other bank, the sled went end over end and rolled a few times and I did the same but it was in deep powder so I never got a scratch, straightened out the skis and handlebars on the Blizzard and rode her back to the trailer, sure got some laughs from my buds though.

Nothing too serious while sledding-broken thumb last year while exploring low earth orbit due to hidden rock in the Snowies.:face-icon-small-ton

Totalled my '02 MM700 on the side of a big scary hill with lots of trees at the bottom. 400' ghost ride and AWESOME impact. Once I found out my sled was a tree hugger, i was glad it was totalled:face-icon-small-win

1997 while teaching myself to Paraglide(you need more than a book for this;)) a dust devil sucked me up to about 75', wrapped up my wing into a pile of crap, and promptly deposited me back to terra firma. Broken elbow, broken pelvis, and broken ankle.

Day after Christmas had a head on collison with another dirtbike in a sand wash at about 60mph. A few cuts, nicks, and bruises, along with two completely munched fingers that got caught behind my clutch lever. They were almost severed by the impact of the other dudes top triple clamp. Not only did it hurt, but my fingers were UGLY! Kinda like Oprahs back side:rolleyes:

2001 a spectacular get off that would have made one of my heroes proud, Evel Knievel. During MY LAST desert race:D, while passing another guy tapped out in fifth on my XR650R, HRC kitted, my front tire decided to explore the depth of a rain rut that was about 6" wide. The rut was about a foot deep and angry. It quickly latched on to my wheel and sent me, once again, into low earth orbit. I don't remember a thing about the actual space walk, but I can tell you that I, just like that famous toolbag, was untethered. That excursion gave me my first concussion, my first knock out, and more of the same. A left collarbone, left ankle, 2 left rib and 3 right rib fractures, and a torn up right thumb. Nothing a little out patient surgery didn't fix:D

I'm glad none of mine have been as serious as some of you guys. I have had no internal injuries, and for that I'm grateful. Orthopedic stuff is easy; getting your guts rearranged by a first year med student eager to learn, is not. As Evel once said, " your only true competition in life is death-and so far, I've managed to beat the hell out of him":beer;

last dec i and some freinds were hunting yotes and we were cruzen down the ditch and the neighbor had put a nice big rock in the ditch to keep hunters out of his crp, instead of fixen the fence. Totaled my sled and shatered my left femur. 3 surguries a rod and 3 pins and 6 month of intence theropy it is better but i still cant bend my knee fully. The worste part is no one will take resposabillity for putting the rock there. in total it cost me and my insurance company 58000 for my broken leg. I was in the hospital for 6 days. I also had what they call a fatty embeli. Thats where bone merrow gets in your bloodstream and forms a clot. I ended up getting a clot in my lungs and couldnt breath very good . Sorry for all the misspellings!!!!! Its a new year and a new ride let the snow begin!!!!!!!!our vehicles 069.JPG

With or without me on it?

Beginning of '06-'07 season, on the way out for our 3rd ride of the season - a low hanging primary hydro line caught the handlebars on my sled and ripped it off my deck! Luckily, we have it tried down so it only hung over the edge of the truck and didn't completely let go! Messed up the truck box, sled deck and of course the sled :(

Or, there was the time in Jan.'08 where the track dolly got sucked up into the tunnel and opened up the tunnel light a can opener! $10,000 damage done to my new M1000! Thank god for insurance!

Back in 2000 I was sidehilling through the trees in some bottomless powder, got myself penned in with a bad line but I refused to let off. Knowing if I did it would be a long dig to get out. I had almost no chance of sneaking around this one big old pine tree, but I was determined. I hung it off the side with a fist full and did not make it. Center punched that tree and as I went over the front of the sled, I was spinning around from the momentum. The hood rail (where the hood fits into the bellypan) caught the right cheek of my azz. It literally ripped my right cheek completely away from my body. It was like it was hinged on where it was still attached to my hip/thigh area.

Have you ever shot an animal in the snow? You can only imagine how much blood there was, mix it with snow and it looked like we slaughtered a herd of cows right there. I was riding with a cop and we were 40 minutes from the truck. I was bleeding out so fast I could feel my boots were full of blood. I honestly thought I was going to just go to sleep riding out and it would all be over. What saved me was we tucked my cheek back up under me and I kept all of my weight on it as I rode out. By the time we got to the truck, the bleeding had stopped. If you are ever in a bad accident, forget the tournecut, just lay/sit whatever all of your body weight on top of the wound. It is the best way to stop bleeding.

Cheers!

Thats no friend!!
yep. relegated to acquaintance....haven't rode with him since. when he wouldn't slow down when I was yelling at him, I just hung on as tight as I could around his chest under his arms figuring if I was getting off, so was he.

last I remember before impact was my legs straight out behind in a "superman" so to speak just before I used him as an airbag...we cleaned the bars off the sled at the clamps.

his foot was locked in causing his ankle break, not sure if hitting him or the ground after caused my injuries, or a combination of both. beacon was the culprit for the broken ribs, and possibly the cracked sternum.

I now wear it around my waist instead of on my chest. doc said if it would've been over my heart, the impact could've caused it to stop beating. TekVest would've prevented major injuries I'm sure.

I found a colvert at 70, luckily i was standing and ejected over the bars into somebodys back yard. I was relatively fine other than a bruised leg (must have cause the j-hook on the bars or something)

The snow had drifted ove the colvert, it wasnt marked and i had no idea it was there. Just ripping along and the next thing i knew i was rag-dolling through the air!

It literally ripped my right cheek completely away from my body.

This reminds me of a story when I was on a ski patrol back east. A skier lost control and went off into some thick trees. He was impaled on a branch a couple inches in diameter. Went right through him in the pelvis region. With the branch still in him (sticking out of his azz and groin) he had a suprisingly good sense of humor. He had epilepsy and his comment was that people always told him he walked like he had a stick up his azz, now he can tell them he really does!

Man, reading some of these horror stories almost makes me want to question why I ride:eek:.

I've got a couple:

1) Was riding in BC and my sleds clutching was not working worth a chit that day (completely fixed now:D). Anyways we had one big climb to get onto the next glacier and it was literally all downhill from there (more on that later). Anyways I couldn't make the main pull so my buddy went up a different line that involved a pretty technical sidehill. I almost made it, the only mistake I made was running above my buddie's trench and getting sucked into it thus robbing me of a ton of momentum. The last thing I remember was getting thrown off course and nose planting my sled into a cornice. I got launched over the bars and watched my sled tumble down the hill, trashing the hood completely (nothing a few zip ties didn't fix hehe:cool:).

Anyways I end up doubling with someone and jumping off and walking/climbing up this hill. At 7000ft it doesn't take long to get winded and once I got to the top I sat down, had some water and swallowed my pride. Buddy of mine who is was more skilled than me managed to get my sled up the pull and then we continued downward on this glacier which leads me to my next story...

2) After piecing my M7 back together, we head down towards the valley floor and to do so, it was a cruise down this glacier. Cool right? It was until I got separated from the group and saw another guy's line that went down this quarter pipe looking feature. I thought "No way, I already trashed my sled enough today and I'm not getting myself seriously injured." So I look straight ahead (quarter pipe feature was to my left) and with no where else to go, said a quick prayer to God and pinned it off this drop, maybe 20ft straight down but I didn't realize it was flat bottomed with hard pack snow. Needless to say I bottomed out so hard and jarred my back pretty good. To this day I think I should have gone and gotten x-rayed because I think I got a compression fracture in my lower back. But it didn't hurt afterwards so no worries right? Wrong, my back still gives me problems from time to time. Sucks but other than stretching and visiting the chiropractor, theres not much else I can do for it.

Back in high school a group of 10 kids had gone on a winter break trip and while out riding one rider was behind the group and the remaining 8 or so guys had parked on the opposite side of a hill so when the last guy came over, he slammed into the back of the other sleds and became paralyzed from the waist down....

Just goes to show you no matter if you think you are parked somewhere safe, things still happen.

The friends who he hit were not even parked on the trail, the rider who became paralyzed had let everyone get far ahead at night to come flying up the trail to catch up with the group and he hit a rut which sent him too far to the side of the trail.

Sad story for sure.
