"Groups" yes, but does that translate to every individual you run across? You think every single skier or hiker you meet on a trail is part of one of these groups? I bet the majority of them would have no idea what you're talking about. Just like the majority of sledders won't even join their local club....same on that side.
Is that what I said or were you trying to sensationalize it for effect? Having been very active in land use issues around here I actually do know that a good portion of those skiing certain areas are definitely part of those groups. I see them often enough that I know their vehicles, clothing faces and sometimes names. Did I say I "target" any of them? I think I am rightfully upset with the position they take, and the known characters usually start with attitude when you run across them. Clearly it happens, some places a lot, others maybe once that I recall.
If people do not know what the issues are and a conversation ensues, I try education. You are right, most people are reasonable when approached that way. This helps the fence sitters sway our way or at least give us consideration.
The snowmobile club. Bad experience there for me. Formed one, worked hard, was sold down the river by csa more than once. You would have a hard time convincing me that is a productive entity when it comes to land use and sled regulations. Even most club members are more interested in beer than land.
So apathy on both sides but we keep losing? The players are easy to identify, obviously it isn't everybody you encounter in the back country, nobody ever said it was.
