What is the purpose of Law Enforcement?

I never should have used the DUI as my example.
It totally sidetracked where I was trying to go. Even I got caught up in it.

Any law enforcement entity should be funded to the point that it would survive if it wrote zero tickets. That way they can only be driven by serving the public without having to justify their existence.

I am not anti-cop, not at all. In fact I really feel for them in small communities, it is truly a damned if you do damned if you don't scenario.
People bitch about traffic being too fast & bitch if they happen to be the one being ticketed.

In SD the law enforcement agencies do not directly receive the fine money. The fine composes of $66 court costs which split up with $40 going towards law enforcement training and 911 services, $23.50 going to run the court system, and $2.50 going to a victim compensation fund. The rest comprises the fine which is split 35% to the states general fund and 65% going to the county the ticket was written.

True, it is not a direct deposit so to speak, but there certainly is expectation that each dept would write a reasonable amount of citations & generate an expected amount of revenue. (Notice I did not use the forbidden "Q" word):face-icon-small-win

they would just make up stuff to write a ticket~ as if they don't already do that~

I firmly believe in our constitution, including taking the 4th pretty seriously. I look at checkpoints as a violation of that. So, you can guess the rest.

Like I said, I have no problem nailing them to the wall and the problem is that they don't. I had a friend that got 3 DUI's before he spent time in jail and even then it was only 1 year. Fawk that, your second DUI should be a significant time in the slammer.

Good post, that is exactly where I was going to go. Checkpoints are unConstitutional. Police need probable cause to pull you over or to detain you in anyway. A check point is detainment.

People like skidoorulz would rather have security than freedom...shocker. Our founders warned us about that. One who would give up freedom for a little bit of temporary security neither deserves freedom or security.

So you would rather have your wife and kids that you care so much for killed by a drunk driver, rather than have that drunk driver stopped at a check point and taken off the road a half mile before he would have run the stop light killing your wife and children. I wonder how your wife and kids would feel about you if they knew you would rather have a drunk driver keep his so called rights, rather than them being safe? Don't answer that. You already have.

I have an idea. Why don't we just turn the US into Cold War era East Germany so we can protect everyone from everything!!!
