What is the purpose of Law Enforcement?

With this being New Years Eve and all of the sobriety checkpoints that go with that, I thought it a good time to ponder what is the purpose of having law enforcement?

I realize it is a rhetorical question, we all know law enforcement was initiated to protect and serve the public.

My point is that law enforcement has morphed into more of a revenue generating entity, therefore protect & serve has become little more than a slogan.

This is not by any means the fault of the good men and women out there on their patrol in the worst of conditions while the rest of us are warm and safe with family and friends. No, this is simply another byproduct of our local, state & federal governments needing to look at every possible way to bring in money, and petty victimless crimes are simply low hanging fruit.

A timely example, sobriety checkpoints.
Tonight many good hardworking people will be cited for DUI for having a BAC that just a few years back was legal. This will cost these families thousands of dollars in fines and related costs.
This is where I ask myself if this is protection & service.
Well, it is not. It is simply revenue generation.

Chuck and I will be out tonight. Kicking azz n stuff. ;)

As someone who had to drive off into the borrow pit to avoid being hit head on at 65 mph by a drunk driver going the wrong way on the Interstate. With my wife and kid in the car at 12 oclock at night I say good for the checkpoints. If thousands of men and women get for DUI tonight so what! These laws are not new. Yes the limits have changed but not yesterday. These people who get tagged for DUI are adults. They know the laws and if they choose to go drive on their own it is their problem. I would much rather see it cost them thousands of dollars than see it cost a family the loss of a loved one.

Go get em mow. I hope someone doesn't shoot you.:face-icon-small-ton

The checkpoints are BS, but I have no issues with nailing drunk drivers to the wall. If you can't go out and have a good time without having to drink, you have a problem, especially if you can't be responsible enough to have a DD.

Would you rather have John Doe nailed for DUI before he killed your wife or wait until after he killed your wife? The problem is that not everyone is responsible enough to have a DD.

so if I go out and get smashed, and have a dd, do I have a problem?:argue:

This is a useless subject on this forum. I agree with you doorulz! But there are just to many guys on here that like to drink and drive. They "think" that they are highly evolved humans that are impervious to the affects of alcohol. It's not about being inebriated, it's about being impaired! There are plenty of skiny punks that are impaired at .04, that's why the limit was lowered. My thought is why risk it at all? Just have a sober friend drive, call a taxi whatever it takes. There is no reason for you to have to worry if you will get pulled over or risk thousands in fees and fines. Just plan you will be buzzed, make arrangements to get home, go out and Have a good time.
Happy New Years!!

I have zero sympathy for anyone caught dui. I lost a cousin and two of his three children to a dui person who thought he had lots of time to make a light. He didn't, was not even close.
In BC it's zero tolerance. One drink can get you a 24hr suspension, or more, and a 30 day impound of vehical.
Very simply, if you drink, don't drive. How hard is that to understand!!!!!!!!!

I firmly believe in our constitution, including taking the 4th pretty seriously. I look at checkpoints as a violation of that. So, you can guess the rest.

Like I said, I have no problem nailing them to the wall and the problem is that they don't. I had a friend that got 3 DUI's before he spent time in jail and even then it was only 1 year. Fawk that, your second DUI should be a significant time in the slammer.

I said "if you HAVE to", don't make it different than what I said. If you have to, then yes, you have a problem. If you WANT to, and have a DD, have a great time.

Not drinking and driving is not practical.
Not when you live in a small community with no alternative transportation.

If nobody drank & drove our bars would close.
I know some of you say "good, let the bars close", well that also means all of our supper clubs.
Without doing the math I would say it would mean at least 10% of our businesses.
Like it or not, bars are legal & a financially vital part of communities.
They are unfairly targeted by by law enforcement.
I know for fact that officers watch which vehicles are parked outside the bar for a long period & then follow them waiting for any imperfection to pull them over.

Don't think I am saying give a pass to drunk driving, I am not.
I have lost friends & I feel for those who have lost family.
If someone's driving displays that they may are impaired, let's get them off the road. Drunk is drunk.

This arguement is sidetracking my original point of the thread.
In the good old days, if you were "tipsy" you were given a warning and told to get home.
Now, there is no leeway, and I think that public safety is a mere slogan they hide behind because it is actually all about the money.

And "Zero Tolerance", that is a phrase I simply despise in any setting.
I live in the real world where the only zero torelance is for zero tolerance.
Between black & white lie a good share of gray.

OK what about speeding?
What about the guy going down the interstate at 72 in a 70 mph zone?

Seatbelts? Now there is a perfect example of a victimless crime.

I agree with you mafesto

We don't live in a world with mature responsible human beings anymore. these useless people make up for well over half the population and growing daily!

If there Weren't hundreds of thousands of people killed by drunk drivers there wouldn't have been a need to change the law or create the law in the first place. At least there is still some semblance of " the good ol days" in small town America. But that is fading fast due to the rapid influx of godless, brainless retards.

A local man was arrested for his 11th DUI the other day. Id say the laws are doing far more for revenue than safety .He was 2.5 x the limit.

Like gun laws in some places we have some of the toughest laws on DUI and the worst problem. Its not working but does make tons of $$$

A couple years back my shop was burglarized 6 times in one year a nearby business 10 times. When the cops do finally show up its a joke and nothing ever happens. But I roll through a stop sign without coming to a complete stop I get fined 100.00

Its about $$ plain and simple if you think otherwise your fooling yourself.
