Ive been having this problem with fouling plugs randomly in both cylinders and i thought it was an electrical isue but in the middle of tuning i found this when i checked my piston wash... (btw its an 04 800ho with rkt drop in kit, vf3's, stock pipe ceramic coated)

the head was COVERED in oil!

See how thick it is, especially the exhaust side!?

It isnt carbon it litteraly wipes right off the head, oviously oil.

I have the oil pump adjusted t0 18mm, and the spring mod done, so it must be internaly hung up or something? maby its shot?
what do you guys think?

here is a few pics of the piston wash, looks like im running rich too, the weird thing is though with my br9eya's in there very light tan to almost white, but my br9es's are wet and black? one set of plugs says lean one says rich? but my piston wash is rich right?

My egts aprox are reading at wot 1125, 3/4 throttle 1075, 1/2 throttle 950, 1/4 throttle 750-900. both cylinders are within 10* of each other 99% of the time. so what do you guys think is up with that?

any help would be great!
Thanks,
-Jesse

If your EGt's are accurate, you are definatly rich! Piston wash reflects this. Typically the midrange is real lean, even on a stock sled 13-1400 isn't unusual.
I would look for 1150-1250 in the mid and 1250 max on a loooong pull to be safe, BUT make sure the plugs mirror what your EGT's are telling you. Read both the center electrode, ground electrode and smoke ring on the porcelain when you read plugs, color will vary with different fuels and oils.
Are you running the DPM? what jetting and needle setting?

I just got back from a 75ish mile ride and foulded only one plug, much better than usual lol. egts at 1/4 throttle were 1050, 1/2 1150, 3/4 1160 wot hit 1200 a few times but was usualy 1160 range. Im going to check wash tonight but im guessing im still rich.

im not running dpm, i have stock needles in the middle position, 360 mains, 17.5 pilots, fuel screws 1.5 turns out. Im running klotz oil, 92 octain pump gas.

thanks for the help!

360 mains are for a DPM equipped sled.. If you are running 0-1000ft then the 360 should be OK... for every 1000ft ABOVE sea level drop 1 size on the main jet.. You needle will be WAY to rich if you are above 2000ft..

What elevation are you running??

Ya im between 0-600ft most of the time when im riding other than when i head out west.

i didnt get a chance to check the wash last night some stuff came up that i had to get done. the plugs were still dark but not black so will see. ill take some pics tonight and see what you guys think. the sled rips even more now so i think im heading in the right direction.

thanks for the help guys,

went out and put on 7mi today but it was very warm out 25*f my midrange egt's were max of 1200 but wot max i saw was 1125. i think im going to try 350 mains but im going to wait tell tomorrow to check wash, its sapose to be 10-15*f.

got some pics of us flat landers riding in our mad pow lol all 1 1/2 feet of it, its my friend eric on his nytro and me on the rev.

thanks again,

Have some new pics of the wash, this is with the needles down one clip and 360 mains, still looks rich to me but not quite as bad. Domes werent totaly coved in oil this time either, only slightly. My egts from 1/4-3/4 are in the 1075-1200 range but wot is 1175 tops. guessing i need to put in those 350 mains.

heres the pics,

Ya know, I have a similar scenerio with running BR9EYA's. The plugs show lean, but the wash is way rich. I know I'm rich on the bottom end (engine blubbering and smoke ring is black) but I think I'm about right at in the mid and top end. Mid EGT's are mid 1100's and the top end climbes to upper 1100 on a good pull. Not sure where your probes are located, mine are located on the Y-pipe about 2 inches away from the head.

How long does it take to change the piston wash?

Ya, i dont know whats up with the plugs, scares me but then i check out the wash and its totaly safe so i got nothin? My probes are 2" form the flange on the Y-pipe also.

I did pick up about 100-150rpms after i jetted down so im going to have to add a gram of weight or so.
