2012 Blown Engine (Pics and Video)

Finally an educated response to jones problem, thanks Adrenaline. Far to often you have posts in threads like this that do nothing but bitch and moan and cry. It's like friggin broken record and its the same guys over and over.

Ya ya we know there are issues with this engine, do any of ya add any constructive advice to guys that want to avoid these issues. Or maybe help the guys try to extend the life of this motor? No, no that would be to positive, most just want to moan and moan and moan.

Sorry Jones that sucks hopefully you can get some sound advice for your next motor so you can make it last. So your not like that other guy that goes through 4 motors in 4 years and no one wants to ride with him anymore. But he gets on SnoWest and bitches in evrry thread that pops up.

Rant over.

You and I are on the same page. The crying gets very old, and does nothing to help.

Bad new travels fast .

And is also over exaggerated often.

The irony is strong in this one. :face-icon-small-dis

Oh god...split the hair a little finer next time:face-icon-small-dis

Hey dizzle, why are you even in polaris forum? There always has to be someone like u stirring stuff up.

I visit all 3 of them often, but pay the most attention to the Polaris one as that is what I grew up riding. I am not one of those who try to cause trouble, I don't bash the manufactures like so many do. I'll just point out certain things that I honestly feel should be noted..thats all.

Why would I hide what happened to me?

Jones - I am not suggesting you not post what happened to you, the reason I responded the way I did is because of how you worded your experience. It's not a personal attack towards you at all...I think this thread - because of the responses - will shed a little more light and HOPEFULLY make people more aware that they absolutely have to listen to their motors.

It's a never ending bitch cycle. If the motors didn't have problems, then they would find something else to complain about. Just like the Cat guys with the belts, and the Ski Doo guys with their engines or broken skids. So thats why I am saying, and not specifically to you Jones, but if you damn people don't like your **** to break - then don't buy a performance sled. :face-icon-small-con

my 2012 has 1400 miles on it so far and no issues to date. BUT after reading so much on the forums about it being a ticking time bomb it has me thinking. From the beginning I have run only 94 non ethanol fuel from chevron here in BC. I buy it from the same station every ride. What worried me was how little oil it used. My 2009 700 would use a full litre or slightly more per tank of fuel. My pro used a half litre per tank at best.

This year I decided to turn up the oil pump and add a minimum of 1/2 oz of oil per gallon of gas. Now I am using just under a litre of oil per tankful and I know that the top end is getting some oil as well with the premix fuel. The sled pulls fantastic and I have never fouled a plug or had any excessive smoking. Regardless I never just pull the cord and hit the gas and go, I always watch the temp and make sure it is warmed up in the morning and the temp stabilizes when I do hot restart and go.

It sucks to have it in the back of my mind that it may blow up at any time, while my buddies with cats and doos just pull and go and never worry. I love my sled and it handles better than the cat or doo but the motor issue is a constant worry for sure. Will be doing the RKtek top end for next year after the warranty runs out as long as it lives thru this year.

Good point. Polaris fixed the skirt problem in 2013. Get a 2013 short block and ride it like you stole it.
LOL , Sorry but that's not the first time they fixed the skirt . It has changed how their braking though , the crack isn't going as high . Kind of funny just like the IQs ' a little bit of time and it's the same old story , same old results , same engine . Why people think it's fixed is what's puzzling .

BUT after reading so much on the forums about it being a ticking time bomb it has me thinking.

Don't.

Just because some guys on a nation - wide forum post that their motors blew up shouldn't deter you from continuing to enjoy your sled. What has there been, 12? 15? Maybe 20 guys post there situations on here? Polaris sold over 10 thousand 800's last year....even if a couple hundred guys popped their motors it wouldn't be a significant percentage.

Thats why I hate the forums in this specific area...it has a tendency to blow things completely out of proportion and the gossip from the forums makes it's way into showrooms and bench racing.

Do yourself a favor and ignore the threads made on here, otherwise you are allowing a buncha strangers on the internet put a damper on your hobby.

Ok well explain to me why my new short block is on back-order? I wont be getting my sled back until the end of this month...

You poo blind loyalist just make me laugh . I have came on here to help inform peeps on the engine issue. If I was like you and buried my head in the sand my engine would have cost a lot more . Lucky I heeded the warning of others and tore it down to find a catastrophic in the workings .
If it where not for us that come on here and tell it like it is you all would be riding another brand because Polaris would have not changed anything and would still be going thru multiply engines .
It is great that some have not had any problems but it is because of our pissing and moaning to forums and dealers that poo is refining the product .
So instead of coming on here to bash us maybe you should be thanking us for keeping the pressure on Poo to build the sled it is today .

Thanks go out to INDY DAN ,RKT ,PAR ,MNTEK , NORTHSTAR ,AND ALL THE REST THAT HAVE CAME ON HERE WITH IDEAS AND CURES FOR THE POLARIS 800

Think its possible the deto happened after the skirt broke? Hole in the case causing an in rush of air leaning that cylinder out? I feel that if there was a deto issue the PTO cylinder would show signs of it as well.

exactly.

when the skirt cracks before it breaks, there is enough room created allowing the piston to slap, setting off det sensor. ;)

Ya it's all because of the whining and moaning on snowest that has kept the pressure on Polaris. Get a grip.

Do you have any proof of this statement?

Do you have any proof that Polaris actually even acknowledges this forum...let alone read it?

My guess is that Polaris and the rest of us have turned a deaf ear to the constant crying and whining. I have never seen boo whooing ever get any ones attention. It just becomes noise after a while. When there is a problem, there a problem. When it’s discussed without the too often, poor pitiful me... BS, then it has relevance. If I was Polaris I would view the cry babies as malcontents that would bitch if they were hung with a new rope. Misery loves company and this site proves it everyday with the whiners club.

Jones 34 Good luck with you engine I hope you get it back soon their is still some good snow up hi .
I will not stoop any lower to carry on a conversation with the other 3. If you are interested go back and do a follow up on their previous post and you will see how many positive post they have made or should I say helpful post.
Their are good at hijacking someones thread with their name calling ,or telling them to go back to another forum if you do not agree polaris is the best .
It sad that threads have to get to this .

OK So FIXES ARE WHAT?

I agree 100% although I have 2013 Pro-R 800 Switchback! I sort of discovered that the 13 have thicker skirt, but sounds like same pistons/rings! So also thinking about going to RKtec Pistons for sure and thinking WTH go with heads and drop in kit also? Waiting to try find out comb work in MN midwest vs. Mountains etc.??? Then heard someone post that new pistons and rings maybe on new 14 models, so sounds like Polaris is experimenting or trying to find solutions???? Yea I like riding no like down time as for sure no snow last year and this year not much better riding in SO MN ok or better up north! Going there yet b4 spring! JUST SAYING "YEA Forms help each other if discussion proper done! :focus:
