what do you guys think

i figured around 70 mph. I was a mile and ahalf from my house and had riden that ditch the previous year. i was trying to hury up and catch the group, and just had hit the gas. And we ride ditches because thats all we get to ride around here ont he flat lands. i hear what all you are saying tho and thanks!!!!

If I was the owner of the property I would be suing you for being stupid.
Riding a snowmobile 70mph down a ditch is not very smart, suprised you didn't get a ticket. You are a hazzard driving like that on a open road, what if some kids where playing in the ditch or a car was pulling out of the driveway. Learn your lesson, be glad you were the only one to get hurt and slow the f down. Ride smart, ride responsible, live to ride another day

It is to bad you got hurt, hopefully you have a 100% recovery

It really sucks what happened to you, I feel bad for you, but I honestly can't help but think that in my opinion, the fault still lies in the most part on yourself. As many times as you travel through that ditch, as well as you may think you know it, theres always the possibility that something may be there that was not there before (vehicles, tires, dead animals that were hit by cars, partial lost loads etc.) and its up to you to exercise caution, most of us don't, I admit, but for the times its happened to me I would only be blaming myself. I would be mad at the guy who put the rock there sure, but deep down, I would know fully well that it could have been prevented with some extra caution on my behalf.

70 mph in my opinion seems excessive for where you were riding despite the excuses of why you were doing it, if someone blew off the road and had the car in the ditch, you would probly have hit that instead, a ditch in my opinion is just not the place I want to be going 70 mph

If he did in fact place that rock there which it seems he did, absolutely its wrong, and that guys deserves a caning, and to be on the hook for some medical bills in my opinion but the fact of the matter is if you were travelling at a safer speed, who knows what may have happened, and there is no proof, a big reason why he probly never called or asked how you were doing is because I think it could be used as an admission of guilt.

Just to add some fun and not trash you. It's too bad you didn't spot the rock so you could have layed down some plywood. Imagine the look on his face when he saw you having fun with his malicious act. Hanging out there all day intead of ditch banging. Good luck and speedy recovery.

You mountain guys won't ever understand the 70mph+ ditch riding, so don't try to. It's a flatlander thing and totally normal in the central areas. A good portion of our trail systems are in the ditch beside the road.

Exciting huh? Now you know why we come out west :)

Here you can research the SD laws on snowmobiles and where they can operate.

http://legis.state.sd.us/statutes/StatutesTextSearch.aspx

If you take it to court the first thing the defense will argue is that you were operating your snowmobile recklessly or too fast which would be in violation of 32-20A-2.

If you talked to a lawyer for just an hour or so I'm sure he could tell you if you have any case.

It's funny how ditch riding is acknowleged by law as permitted. 32-20A-6
Oh Man how I feel for the flatlanders.

It is permitted in basically every midwestern state. Not sure about other states out east.

In South Dakota unless you're riding in the Black Hills, you're riding ditches.

you guys are right i shouldnt have been going that fast, but i am not sure what you guys are thinking a ditch is. We dont have really big hills from my house i can see10 miles to the east 4 miles to the north 2 miles to the south and 3 or 4 miles to the west thats why it is called flatland.the ditches are36 feet from the fence line to the edge of the grass line or gravel road and for the most part i know what is the ditches around here hahhaah guess not that one tho. I understand where you guys are comen from but you cant tell me that everyone that has ridden a sled hasnt opened it up once or twice just to see what it can do in a medow or where ever( that was ment for w8tn4u). I am usually pretty concervitive mabey riden between 25 and 45 in the ditches or even on an open feild just because you never know what kinda drift you might hit, manly because i dont have the money to repair my sled all the time so i try and take it easy with it. I usualy am the one that follows and i was following 2 other guys that day they never seen the rock either they just hapened to miss it. In a way i am glad it was me tho because there was a gradeschooler and a highschooler rideing behind me. I always ride up on one knee and that is why i got thrown so far to. But if i would have been sitting down the high rise handle bars would have hit me in the chest and probably crushed my chest mabey killing m. I missed two steel post that were sticking twards the ditch to. How i just got a broken leg out of the deal I will never know. I was lucky someone up there was looken out for me that day. I will only be able to bend my knee to 96 degrees so there is no 100% recovery comen my way. I will just have to live with that and it sucks but what can ya do. Alot of you mountain men in my opeinion would have a tuff time riden these ditches the first few times its nothing like riden in the mountains atleast up there you can see a drop off a cliff or a big tree comen at ya. Maybe i am wrong. But for sure my riden style will change next year. You dont have to be first all the time that only gets ya in trouble.

Man that looks nasty!!!!!

You don't need to be hard on yourself or justify your action. It's easy to play the blame game and point fingers after the fact. Guess what you're right. We all open er up. "Oh my God", a moose just jumped out in front of me. Now I'm a dumb azz for going too fast. I can tell you learned a valuable lesson. But I bet even after you recover, you'll pin er again. That's all part of the rush. I think that's why we all spend thousands of dollars for less weight and more HP. I know that's why I do what I do and spend $$$ on vids. Can I make the drop off a 40 ft. cornice and leave the first plant hole? Sounds stupid, but I like it. Call me dumb or call me a sledding adrenaline junky. Or better yet call me when there is 3 feet of fresh.
Peace out and have a great summer.:D

Newsflash dillweed......
70 mph in a road ditch is nothing at all.
You obviously don't understand the riding conditions, so don't be so hard on the kid.

You fixin' that sled??? If so I've got quite a bit of those parts laying around here, your welcome to them. Belly pan, bumper, stock radius rods, stock trailing arms, hood brace, hinges, and more if I look hard enough. Don't have the pipes but I do have a stock pipe with an aftermarket can.

Shipping would be fairly cheap.;)

I'm proud to be a member of a community (snowmobiling) that helps one another like this!:beer;

I would count your blessings that you are alive and move on.
I had a friend that wasn't as lucky as you.
In February of 2006 she and friend hit a ditch going through a field at night going about 50-60 mph and flew 60-80 head first into another concrete ditch.
She was in a coma due to brain trauma for three months and spent the next year trying to learn to talk and walk again but in April of 2007 she died. She was wearing a helmet.

Allot of people on the old forum gave support to her family after the accident and may remember her. Her name was Chelsea Franklin.

It really sucks to think that some one would intentionally try to hurt another person and if he did I believe that he will get whats coming to him one day, but be thankful that YOU get the opportunity to live, breath and ride another day.

A couple years ago i had a pretty scary accident that completely changed the way i ride. I flew off the sled, landed on my back and rolled over backwards ****ing my neck all up. Took a long to time get back to normal and i always think about it when i'm about to do something stupid. I use extra caution and always double check stuff.

I still have loads of fun and do some crazy stuff, but i try to think it through were as before the accident i wouldn't. You'll be fine Trav, the first couple rides you'll be a little gun shy and it will wear off. I'm sure many people have had the same experience with accidents.

Plus it's a good reason to get a bigger sled!!!!
