Turnagain Pass

Was going to ride Placer today but it looked wind blown and miserably windy as we drove by so headed to Turny instead. What a day! It was sunny, clear, no wind, and fresh powder! Couldn't have asked for a better day. Here's a few pics from today.

large avalanche on the backside @ turny @ 5:20 pm

Just got news of an avalanche on the backside of turnagain. Troopers and avalanche rescue crews are in route. Hope everybody is okay and safe. Also hope everybody was wearing their beacons.

Any new info please post !!

Me, Rmanzek, Yeti, and PuffNak are all home safe. We didn't even see the avalanche and I'm not sure whether anyone was dropping into the bowls anyway, only a few people went up and over. I made some of the first tracks all the way up and that was enough of a battle that fighting to get back out of the bowl with only me and ryan on a 121" didn't sound that appealing. I hope everyone is ok.

Good to see you guys home safe. Well I was thinking about it and there must have been a sledder that called 911 or how would they have known about an avy ? Maybe a helicoptor flying over but I would think it would have been a snowmobiler that witnessed it and called. I guess well find out the scope of it here on the news pretty soon. So late in the day im sure there was not many people back there. When I found out I jumped online to see the turnagain thread and sure enough somebody posted that three of you were there "right now" I was like shiaat, does not sound good. Everybody be very careful on Saturday and Sunday.

Anyways, how was the snow today ? How much new snow was there ?

Channel 2 news reported that they were buried for about 45 minutes and the rescue crews performed cpr with no success. My prayers go out to the friends and family's of the victims. Channel 2 news will have a complete report at 10 pm tonight. It really could have been any of us and goes to show how dangerous our great sport is. I have read the past few days that the avy danger is very high right now and will be very aware this weekend when I ride.

The news just announced that the troopers found 3 people in the avalance and were unable to revive any of them. Extremely sad news and all of my condolences go out to the families of the deceased, Ryan and myself may have been the last to see these guys go up and over. Everyone needs to be really careful about riding in the chugach/kenai area because these avalanche conditions are consistent throughout these areas. Think twice before you just go shooting up that gulley or slope and think twice for your buddies as well.

Hate to hear this! Let's be safe and take the extra precautions necessary to avoid any more horrible losses this year. Condolences to the families who lost loved ones in this:brokenheart:
