IDLE CURES

Darn It! So how do i cure my idle problem?

I suspect there's others issues,

1) Double check the T.P.S. setting, make sure it's set correctly to begin with (procedure under INCREASING YOUR IQ Thread)

2) Dirty throttle bodies due to belt dust ingestion via the gap at the bottom of the air box

3)Too rich at altitude, perhaps a PC-5 would help

4) Worn/damaged reed petals ??????

5) Low compression ???

is it safe to assume that the TPS is bad if it has spikes in the meter while depressing the throttle lever? It says it should be a smooth increase above?
 
so if one find that as they depress the throttle and the voltometer "peaks" at different levels, then the TPS is bad?
 
I've got it all put together and tested 2 different batteries, both were:
Switch off = 0
Switch on = 4.8 - 4.9

Specs below say 4.99 - 5.01

Is this close enough or are my readings the sign of a bad regulator?

Try a couple more batteries, after that try changing out regulators.

4.8-4.9 is NOT close enough

OK, had Meter set wrong. I have 4.94V on 4 different batteries. Bad regulator?

EDIT: Changed regulator now getting 4.95V on all 4 batteries
I have a cheap little multimeter, could it be meter or another regulator or is the 4.95 within the parameters?

EDIT #2: Different regulator and now 4.96V on all 4 batteries

Mountainhorse Eric ran across several bad regulators as well.

I'm sure you're getting frustrated by now, but 4.96 volts is still off by more than spec, no sense in trying to re-calibrate the T.P.S to .94-.70 volts at that point, I.M.O.

Can you borrow/try a different digital VOLT-meter from one of your buds and check to see if that's the problem, if not I'd keep trying switching voltage regulators, Yeah, a P.I.T.A., I know.
 
you might try buying a better quality regulator..I bought 3 NTE 960 5 vlt. regulators..all 3 were spot on between 4.99 and 5.01 vlts.. they are made by NTE electronics inc.

Did you order them or buy at local store?

I've tested 8 regulators from Radio Shack and can only get 1 to read 4.97V, the rest read 4.94V - 4.96V
I'm getting different reading, so I'm guessing its not my meter. I should probably go to the store and get a decent Fluke or something similar.

I buy all my stuff from an electronics supply store..much better quality....(in this case fridgid north supply...

meter quality is extremely important..I use a fluke 88(a 600.00 meter here) but try a fluke 73..great all around meter and very affordable..my last fluke lasted me over 25 years....and i used to use mine almost everyday as a electronics/fuel system tech...

The second alligator clip is for the grounds. One goes to the black lead of the multimeter and the other goes to the ground of the TPS.

I was wondering if anyone has ever used the power connection on the IQ that powers up the machine without it running and set the TPS that way instead of making the above mentioned tool which I did make but havnt used it yet?

It won't work that way!

Use the POLARIS tool (PART # 2201519-A approx $50 from your local POLARIS dealer) or your home-made version (which is fine), along with a good quality digital meter and TRIPLE check that your tester has 5.000 volts before proceeding

I used a variable potentiometer to set the voltage exactly at 5 volts. You just turn a dial and it gives you the voltage. It was 5 bucks at radio shack and no messing around with multiple voltage regulators.

You can also power up your sled with the connector in the left side of the nosepan and read the value on your PCV if you have one.

I set my numbers at 0.70v and 0.93v on an 09 800. What is the voltage supposed to read at wide open throttle? Mine reads 4.037v. I know you aren't supposed to calibrate the WOT number, but shouldn't they all be the same if they are calibrated on the low end correctly?

I am at my absolute breaking point with setting the tps on this sled!!! My local dealership is useless and all the regulators I can find are no better!! Best one I got is 5.08v so I tried that and the sled revs to no end when I start it after setting the tps. If anyone reading this has the proper tool for the job or has a verified homemade unit they'd be willing to sell I'd gladly buy it and even throw in $20. Please someone keep me from setting this bitch on fire.....
