Tampico snow report

Not open for further replies.
yeah, it was thin, but the worst part is the snow is just fluff, no base at all, but it did warm up today here, so hopefully it settled down. we just need a couple feet of "cascade concrete" to set things up for the season.

Met with the DNR personnel and groomer operator yesterday. Grooming (if conditions warrent, as of this time, snowdepth should not be a problem), snopark plowing and road berming will start next wednesday, December 15th. This is the date at which the contracts actually start.

Grooming routes will be middle fork to top and down north fork to make the loop; red saddle to the top of the ridge, jackass to clover flats (divide ridge clover flats) at the intersection of the dome peak jeep trail, and from middle fork up whites ridge down mcclains canyon to north fork. McClain canyon road has been brushed this last season and should be passable to the groomer.

Conditions have been freezing rain the last 2 mornings with some melting at the lower levels. Really crappy early morning road conditions. The Green Lake snotel has been erratic on their snow depth sensor the last couple of days. A rider report from yesterday indicated 8" of new snow up top, with the base finally firming up.

If you received a flier in your door concerning the funding/land use issues in the Ahtanum, I put them there. PM me with any questions.

I will update this with any new information or changes. The forecast looks marginal for conditions at snow park level, good for conditions up high over the next week. Extended (7-15 day) ones look better at all levels.

My kids get home from college the weekend of the 18th, plan to hit it hard for the 3 weeks after that. Ski-Benders crab feed is this Saturday night, should be a rip.

Thanks,

Tampico

Pigtail is showing 23" of new snow in 47 hours, 15" in the last 24 hours WOW!!

We received about 1" of slush down low this morning, roads are icy again. Up high looks great. We are supposed to get another dump, even down low, Saturday into Sunday before it warms up for a couple of days. It is supposed to cool down after that. Forecasts look good into the Christmas holiday, after the warmup early next week.

Green Lake Snotel is still having siezures; but based on SWE, probably a foot+ of new at the snotel site in the last 24 hours. Looks white as hell from the lower valley where I work (a stupid statement on a day like today).

Have a good ride, we may ride on Sunday; have to prep for the crabfeed on Saturday.

Well, it was about as close to EPIC as it gets... if it had been sunny and not snowing like crazy with marginal visibility all day it would have been epic:D

Got some pics to post soon, but I can't believe I forgot the memory card for the helmet cam:mad: I 'thought' I recorded some AWESOME video too, over the hood powder, how easily a pro will ride out of a stuck, wheelies out of the little bowl, and LOTS more... so pissed at myself right now... didn't realize till I got home and plugged the camera into the TV and it said "Insert Memory Card":mad::mad::face-icon-small-sad

Oh well, I still took a couple pics, it was afterall a great day riding with Snodawg and his new Pro... that thing is IMPRESSIVE!!!!!:face-icon-small-coo

I'll get some pics up shortly

9 inches of new snow on the trucks when we got back, and the entire road all the way down had not been plowed:eek:

We're definitely ready for some grooming, getting pretty bumpy, but luckily we are starting to get enough snow to play off trail reasonably safely:D:D

That really sucks on the memory card. There would have been some awesome video. :face-icon-small-dis
Yes Indeed! Great snow, crappy visibility.
These two pics were taken from the opposite view of 94f's first pic. Yes, you can get a PRO stuck and yes, they do leave a deep trench in the right conditions (slow uphill). But for the most part, they get right up on top. First day of real deep off trail riding and the PRO is all that everyone says it is. First time I ever caught air getting out of the little bowl. That thing flies. Wow!
Oh yea, I had 9 inches of new snow at home, also.

I got home from the Ski-Benders crabfeed about 0030 this late night. Probably about 12" of new, 32F. The snow has a crust on it, so probably a spell of freezing rain (I was out all day).

North Fork road is still not plowed, watch for downhill traffic in the morning, the road is soft and pulls hard. Also will be homeowners plowing their driveways (I do mine in early evening after the crowd has left).

The snow park will probably not be plowed by Sunday morning. When I get more info on this, I will post it. Remember the contracts for plowing and grooming don't start until 12/15, but I am hoping we can get the snopark plowed and the berms up sooner. I have already talked to the groomer operator about this.

This early, heavy snow is a great start to what I anticipate to be a long season.

Beau and I hope to ride when we finally wake up tomorrow if it is not raining.

Jeez, I haven't been up this late since college (recovery was easier then).

The melt has ended...

The melt has ended. This morning the sno-park had light snow (no accumulation), after a night of heavy (and I mean heavy) rain. Now, we have a base. We are supposed to get more snow this weekend; conditions may be skinny in the lower elevations until we get more snow.

Both sno-parks were being plowed this morning. Grooming should commence shortly. I don't believe that Jackass has retained enough snow to groom, and I think that the concentration will be on the middle and north forks prior to this weekend.

Green Lake SNOTEL had lost 35% of its total snow depth in the last warm episode (34">22"). It looks like Green Lake as added 4-6" since last night.

@#34

"you can ride tampico before they berm its dnr land not state land."

Correct, in a way. The Ahtanum State forest (Tampico) has no time limitations on the dates of snowmobile riding season at this time.

But, DNR land is State Land, and is held in trust for the state to provide revenue for state government. The main sno-park is owned by the DNR, hence the state. DNR is within thier rights to deny access to plowing and/or grooming if they have enough justification. That is why the post at the top of the Washington riders section explains local fundraising efforts to keep these lands accessible to snowmobilers. Without the main snowpark being plowed and grooming of the heavily used middle and north fork, the Ahtanum would turn into a cluster(insert bad word here).

I talked to the DNR winter rec. employee and grader operator about the berming and my concerns (I want them up). They should be up soon. Legally, I think the area is open to all types of vehicles until 12/15 of each year.

As of noon, about 0.5" of new at the main sno-park, according to the DNR employee.

Quick note, we got about 1" of new last night. Parking lot plowed, groomer has not started operating yet (I am in contact with him daily, pushing, pushing...). Berms are up on middle fork.

Good storm for this weekend according to forecasts. Accuweather 15 days out has cooled down the last 8 days somewhat (good news, no more pineapple expresses out there).

I am really busy the next couple of days, will try to post something late Friday night if possible.

Went up today(Friday). :clap2:
Still needs grooming, but it seemed better than last Sat. ( I think the rain leveled it out a little bit, but still rough). :face-icon-small-sad
There is a real base now. The snow underneath is pretty darn hard. :amen:
Some areas had about 16" of snow on top (others less).
Had some flat light / foggy conditions, some sunshine. :face-icon-small-hap
Forgot to take the :camera:.:face-icon-small-fro
Another great day of sledding. :wine:
Should be awesome after this next storm moves through. :face-icon-small-coo

Just got back home, but I talked to the groomer operator this afternoon. Groomer will not be in operation before Saturday night:confused:. Mechanical difficulties:violin:; not like I've heard that before. Slight hope to have the groomer going by Sunday morning.

Good news is 5-13" of snow is forecast for the sno-park level by Monday morning and cool temps all next week. I finally plan to get going (really, really) this next week. One kid home, two to go for the christmas break.

Signs should be up for the sno-park permits, make sure everyone has theirs. Hopefully the entrance where all the minivans with the weekend sledders (ie, non-powered idiot sledders on the suicide hill/gravel pit) will be more enforced this season to make sure they at least have sno-park permits. This will hopefully add a few more spots/less congestion for the permit holders.

Need to work tomorrow, plan on riding on Sunday.

One thing to mention, it helps us greatly to notify state parks on their website (an evaluation) on how the grooming and plowing conditions are. I will try to find the correct URL and post it here (found it but wouldn't load on my computer).
