TAMPICO PART 2.... 2013/14

1'+ new light powder in last 10 hours

Rode Jackass today. About 8-15" new over a base of 5"-minus basalt bedrock:face-icon-small-sad. Hit rocks up to about 5000' elevation. BUT, since then 1' plus of new powder at the sno-park elevation:face-icon-small-ton. At 22:50, 12F and the snow has stopped. Estimating about 16-22" in my yard at this time. Could be epic tomorrow; taking the wifey out.

The lower elevation snow is deep - but baseless, nuggets are still there until the snow sets up some. This week looks warmer and wet. Higher elevations should build a decent snowpack by next weekend.

Groomer may be running tomorrow. The snow needs to be - packed before it can be groomed, was to "fluffy" on Thursday.

Ride safe and drive safe! The downhill corner at around 6 miles down (before the bridge) totaled a enclosed trailer today-both truck and trailer ended up in the brush. No one hurt however!

great ride up there today. excellent snow conditions, waist deep at clover flats. must have been 30 rigs in the snow park!

Jackass conditions on Sunday

Rode Jackass again Sunday with the wifey. Rode the main road to the Nasty Creek Flats intersection and then rode east along the roads on through the meadows. The roads were doable, but getting off of them, even at 5,000'+ elevation, we were constantly tapping rocks - was disappointing:face-icon-small-sad. All of this new snow apparently is still on bedrock in the eastern portions of the Ahtanum. All of the untracked roads were still fun though!

The groomer is running today. IMHO, the use of Jackass is not enough to warrant grooming; with the warmup this week it will probably melt off. The groomer is going to try for the main loop today.

The main road is plowed but icy.

Forecast (@ sno-park level) is for a little more snow through tonight (2-7"), then up to 0.75" rain by Tuesday night. Daytime temps will warm to the mid-upper 30s by the weekend; potentially another big colder storm late next weekend:face-icon-small-sho. Freezing rain hazard this evening through mid-day tomorrow.

I was surprised by the number of rigs not up there this weekend. Hopefully a lot were at the Ski-Benders function on Chinook Pass (little Naches). A chance that event may move to the Ahtanum next year. Still, not the numbers I expected with the first major powder dump of the winter. 30 rigs in the parking lot(s) for the type of snow we had is below average; If only this had happened in December...

Remember to support the sport by encouraging others to buy their annual registration tabs. This years registration monies support next years grooming!

Grooming meeting this Thursday, February 13 @ 7pm @ The ElRincon in Yakima.

Drive safe.

Grooming Update

The Groomer (on Monday) did the middle fork across the top, down north fork to the bottom and whites ridge/mcclain canyon. He also did Jackass to the "Y" on the first ridge top.

He was planning on doing Red Saddle today.

In reality, Jackass will probably be down to rocks by Friday as warm/windy as it is.

We should have a wet week with snow up high, but rain at sno-park level. Temps will cool a bit into the weekend, but probably not enough to stem snow loss at the sno-park elevations.

Grooming Update

Yesterday the groomer made another pass up middle fork, but was not able to go over the top due to blowing wind and snow.

Red Saddle was groomed; snow is low near the winter rec. site (sno-park) but good on top.

This morning at the sno-park level it had cooled down with intermittent snow flurries. The road was very icy again this morning.

AVY DANGER IS HIGH!!! Please check this out prior to riding - Wear a beacon and have a avy probe with you.

Ahtanum update

We received about 3" of new snow at the sno-park level this morning. It was mixed rain and snow at 0630 and 34F. The snow has melted a bunch down low, but we still have around 10-14" at the sno-park level this morning. The forecast looks much better (cooler) with between 8-14" new at the sno-park level by Sunday!:face-icon-small-sho Next week it cools down even more, with snow likely almost every day!:face-icon-small-ton The weekend after this one could be awesome...:face-icon-small-hap, but then I start working Saturdays:rant:....

Yesterdays reports were slushy; Cultus hole was good with adequate snow cover (ie, no nuggets).

DEEP, FUN, STUCKS!
Tired......
Ridin da Yamacat

I would say that pretty much sums it up.

I didn't think it was possible, but someone got stuck better than I could ever hope to. Thanks for raising the bar Mtnmax97

If you look closely, you can see Mike's helmet and yes he is standing up and he is well over 6' tall. The boy knows how to dig a trench.

The only method of getting around off of your sled was to crawl like Casey.

Finally catching up on our snowpack with more to come.

Slide at Diamond lake

Did anyone else make it up to Diamond lake this weekend and see the slide that ran all the way out to the lake? It really tore up some trees!!!

Sorry no pic's from me due to dead battery in the camera, if anybody has some pic's of it please post them.

be safe!

Thanks again elkhunt for the tour, I had a blast. Maybe we will meet up again some time. I rode hard enough I was actually a little stiff the next morning. LOL

With all the HEAVY lifting I know why you were stiff:face-icon-small-win
We enjoyed riding with you guys and many thanks on helping with the stucks' from the trench monsters:face-icon-small-dis The group usually does better than that!

The slide was there Saturday morning and looked pretty new to us, lots of debris on top with no snow cover.
