Tampico 01/05/2015 AM update

:face-icon-small-sad Was 43F and raining this morning near the Ahtanum Sno-Parks (ie Discover Pass winter use sites). I had lost about 2" of snow since last (Sunday) night. Grooming commenced on 01/02/15; at least 1 pass on the loop plus Jackass up to past Nasty Creek Flats. Was not enough snow (the reason why our legal Jackass/North Fork) trail cutoff will be great when it actually happens) down low to warrant going back up; apparently lots of trees down just below ewe neck on the Jackass route.

As most of you are aware - once the berms are up - no wheeled vehicles are allowed past them (all berms are up on all 4 snowmobiled groomed routes).

As for the blading down to gravel; tough choice - if you leave to much it will turn to ice making a liability issue> but if the weather turns mushy (like this week, potentially) it bares it off. IMHO, at least now they plow it, unlike years past when sometimes it would turn into a rough icy mess.

I don't know what will happen if we get a sustained snow melt on our lower level weak conditions. Generally berms don't go down until they melt off...which usually means late March...

I did ride last Friday; snow amounts are amongst the shallowest I've seen below 6k' since 2005. Not good....

i rode yesterday and with this weather (59 degrees in west Yakima!) i would say if the berm stays up at the bottom, i doubt it will be ridable this weekend.
Between the park and Whites Ridge it's so thin its hard to find clean snow and keep the skis out of the gravel.
IMO, it should have never been bermed at the bottom and cant imagine why it wasn't bermed at WR.

Looks like a good weekend to watch football!

GO HAWKS!

Good thing I'm going to halfway riding for three days. Hopefully the snow is better there this weekend. If the berm is permanent for the year there may be a good chance ahtanum will not be ridable the rest of the year. I'm with crazy ken why was the burm not put at whites ridge until the snow was deeper down low. Oh well, tis life.

Looking forward to your "Halfway" report!

There was snow then

We were first up the freshly groomed trail last Friday (nice job!) and it was groomed from the berm on up, so there was snow then. Did the groomer know that it would go into the 40's and rain instead of snow a foot?

I can also tell you for a fact that the amount of trailers in both of the lots would have never fit at whites ridge that day, so with the berm at the bottom it kept the snow on the trail and worked out for a lot more sledders.

Thank You mister Groomer!

Yes it did ....for one week. I was up there on Tuesday and Sunday. Yes there was BARELY enough snow to berm and groom from the bottom up.
The question is when it's bare ground a day from now between the park and whites ridge will he knock it down and move to whites ridge?
We rode from tree phones the day after Christmas, one little storm and 3 days later the berms at the bottom. I appreciate the grooming as much as anyone. And as far as all those big fancy trailers go, well let's just say going to a sled deck while living in this state was a wise choice!

I do appreciate the grooming very much, that was not my complaint.my thoughts were that they should have left it an option to drive to whites ridge for now until there was more snow down low, there was only about 5" in the main lot. I will be very disappointed if the berm stays up and there is not enough snow to get to the riding because we cannot drive up a ways.no worries, im not trying to start a pissing match.

Me neither on the pissing match, And I do hope the berm is moved up the hill as is done every spring!
Snow baby! SNOW!!!!!!

Tampico Update

-Grooming has been canceled (in the short term) until we get more snow. A chance of some more snow this weekend. Any major amounts will be reported; getting sick of just reporting melt events....

-Apparently some trees down between the Nasty Creek Flats Road and Ewe Neck (upper Jackass Rd).

-Berms will stay in place until further notice. The grooming has left ice on the lower roads; but at least there is a base for new snow (when/if it snows again). Signs are up also. Fairly large discussion on the berms and side-by-sides at the grooming meeting last night. No wheeled vehicles past the berms; must have a track for propulsion and a ski for steering.

Remember the grooming meetings second Thursday of each month at the El Rincon @ 7pm.

Also remember that current year registrations pay for next years grooming (we are a self funded program). DNR also has added an additional enforcement officer, so expect greater enforcement of the Discover Pass.

The North Fork/Jackass trail cutoff proposal has gained some grant moneys and hopefully will be realized in a couple of years after the engineering has been done.

Bottom line - these are the worst snow conditions I have seen since 2005. My yard is 2/3 bare and I barely have any snow under the eaves/tin roof (usually it is touching the windows by late January!). Long term forecasts are gloomy (as in warmer than normal).

Everyone is right, pure sheet of ice until Tree Phones. Did not really have too much of overheating issues as there is still some soft on the side pullouts. Other than that its still fun up top, only 3' on the snow stake.

Tampico Update 1/11/2015

-Slight trace of snow near the sno-park this morning. Temps in the upper 20'sF. No new major amounts of snow showing up in the Green Lake Sno-tel. Upper elevation temps are running near 40F mid day.

-No changes in the grooming schedule.

-Slight chance of more snow through tonight. Next major precip chances near the end of the week. Temps warmer than normal through this week.

I went up with a friend on Saturday and it was sickening to see the conditions we have.... a pure sheet of ice from the birm all the way to tree phones and barely anything worth riding above there... The majority of the day there was probably 2ft worth of snow underneath us, stumps everywhere. I'll ride ANYTHING and I'm not taking the sleds out again until there's SIGNIFICANT snow fall... There was only about 6-8" of snow left at Tree Phones.

Pretty silly to have a 16ft tall post with 3 ft showing on it mid-season:face-icon-small-sad I guess I didn't need to make it so big:face-icon-small-dis

Ground hog day....

cascadesnowjunky,
Remember your post from last year 1-4-2014:

"I made the maiden voyage on the new pro, the conditions were like expected(terrible) but better than sitting at home. unloaded at treephones on 3" of ice and conditions were not much better up top...."

I hope we get some more snow like last year so we can ride the loop with you again, with a lot fewer stucks!

With the non existent snow reports and no rain down low, did you expect a magical 15ft of fresh to be up top? haha! thanks for taking one for the team tho! Nice to have actual reporting as to the conditions.

Hats off to you tho for speaking the snow truth. All of the snowmobile clubs online that depend on trail fees for income have gone silent on reporting on the snow conditions. They act all concerned about avy conditions but then when there is stumps, rocks, no snow and waste of your time and money they go radio silence. Kinda shady if you ask me.

I do remember posting that now that you mention it elkhunt. If we get any snow I would love for you guys to take me to the area we rode last year. It is awsome back there, I'm doing the snow dance. My halfway trip was a bust, they have a bit more snow but not worth the drive. Everything was crusty and hard pack with the most snow being about 5'. I ended up coming home 2 days early.

The Halfway report sucks as we were thinking of a trip there next weekend:face-icon-small-sad

If the snow comes I'll get in touch with you for a re-ride:face-icon-small-hap

Tampico update 01.15.15 PM

01/15/15 2300 hrs
> mod snow; 2.5-3" new at the sno-park level:face-icon-small-hap. sno-park forecast is for an addition couple of inches - but then up to 1" of rain though Sunday morning:face-icon-small-sad. Darland Mtn should expect 10-20" by Sunday morning with more on Sunday:face-icon-small-hap. Forecasts are jumping all over, though.
-The groomer should make a run tomorrow (Friday) afternoon or evening.
-The middle fork berm and "No motorized vehicle sign" has been temporarily been moved up to the 3.5 mile mark; if the forecast is off and we stay cool enough to add more snow down low, it will probably move back down soon. All other berms are at the sno-park level. DO NOT PARK IN FRONT OF THE BERM!
-I will update this when possible, hopefully tomorrow morning.
-As of this morning, only 6-7" at Tree Phones-road is icy, approximately 2.5-3' on top.
-Could be a decent Sunday into Monday if low elevation snow can hold.

Tampico

Thanks for the updates

Last ride up was the 30th, we hit Klickitat and it was good powder...low snow though. This is one seriously sad year.

Thank you for the regular updates, looks like it's another football weekend for me!:face-icon-small-dis
