D and I are playing hooky (doesn't that sound better than being furloughed?) and hitting the snow tomorrow and Sat. Leaving early and staying late . . . we have time to make up!
If the snow's good (and I don't hit anything ! ) I'll post up some pics. Not sure if we'll hit Tampico . . . prolly head up to WP.
about 1 foot of champagne snow to start the day!
then it got warm and the snow got wet.
about 41 degrees at the snow park when we left and about 4 inches of snow melt.
A very rough ride in the ride out wasn't so bad because it was slushy and lot of gravel popping through the last 3 miles.
we came from rimrock, nobody anywhere around blue lake/ blue slide area at all. Pretty much untracked all day long where we were. snow was okay, about 8" of fluff on top of asphalt, but was a good day only broke two riders and one sled out of 5.
Just a quick update (sorry on a saturday, my internet went down at home and am doing this from work; probably done riding for the season).
The contracted groomer operator is still broke down (has been since February 16th). He is the one who is contracted to take down the berms. My hope is that he will be able to move the berms up next week and bring the wood trailer down. I am hoping for one more grooming run over the top - but don't want him to go nuts w/ grooming this late in the game - that way the funds should roll over into next year.
It is not DNR's responsibility to run the Ahtanum grooming program. That responsibility belongs to state parks; your local grooming council is an advisory council only - we cannot enforce the contracts. The state is aware of the situation (on a yearly basis). The DNR folks are also aware and will be a big help on this in future years.
-AS of the Yakima County Grooming Committee meeting last night, 03/14/2013:
The White and Chinook Pass areas have completed grooming for the season; the berms are still up (or melted away). These areas have depleted their grooming funds for the year. The local clubs (Ski-Benders and the Chinook Pass club) added another week to the season through their donations. On USFS land, the berms OR signs have to be up for the road to be legal to ride on. It also looks like there will be some resolution as to the USFS plowing of the Rimrock area sno-parks for next year. This was a mess earlier in the season; hopefully rectified next year.
The Ahtanum area groomer is still broke down and the berms are up but melting away. The groomer will probably go over the top one more time when he grabs the sled. I am under the assumption that the Ahtanum will have leftover funds for next year. The Ahtanum contracts will be up for bid again this summer for the upcoming season.
Big thanks to the White and Chinook Pass groomers who did a great job again this year.
