TAMPICO 2012/2013 Part 2

Hopefully Mike has a speedy recovery, we never like to here about people getting hurt. Good job guys on getting him out safely. That chute dont look familiar, where is that at if you dont mind me asking.

I've added the video of Mike's climb up the hill to my post from yesterday. As you'll see we were unaware of any problems until just after I stopped recording when I radioed to congratulate Mike on the impressive climb. The incident was not visible to Mark (Sleddude) or myself due to the trees near the bottom.

Right here!

That was right above the tree.

Good answer there. Too funny!!

Now that Mike has some extra time on his hands, he has become a SW forum member. He used the nickname I gave him today. Very fitting since he had 2 ribs slightly fractured (LF instead of RR) last year sledding. Please welcome our new member: Ribeye1

I want to give a huge thank you to all my friends who helped me out after the tree "BIT" me, this is my second year riding and i could not be blessed with any better riding partners or as I prefer "awesome friends", I would not be riding today or would I have taken up the sport if it was not for my brother in law Snodawg and his riding parteners 94fordguy, summ8rmk, sleddude, I thank you for your friendship and everything you did to help me out with this unfortunate accident and getting me off the hill and to the hospital, I am still in a ton of pain and will be sidelined for awhile but I will return to ride again! I also want to give a shout out to mtnmax97 for the nice comment Thank You. I go back tomorrow to the Dr to see if the lung is re-inflating on it's own and if not I get to go back to the hospital for a couple days so they can insert a tube a fill it up for me, I am walking as much as I can because they told me if I just sit and do nothing the chance for severe pneumonia is very likley. Thank you ALL and happy to be a member! RIDE ON everyone hope to see you on the hill sometime.

I am truly impressed with the pregnant cow. I think it is the best all-around sled.
I might end up with one next yr. I cant wait to ride it with some rooster built clutching.
It will be nice to ride all day and still be able to use my arms afterwards. Lol
The snow was good enough to sidehill and stick polaris' 4 times. (The polaris' had the 163-166" tracks) I got stuck too.

As for the smell, it must have been fear, ur fear!
I followed u everywhere even if it scared me but not one person would follow me. one little jump across a creek.??? it was at most 10ft.

It is truly ALWAYS an adventure:D:eek::D

You want to go THAT way?!?!?!?!?!? OK :face-icon-small-hap

That first creek crossing with the big log right on the other side was interesting... wasn't too sure how that was gonna pan out with the too Poo's in front of me both getting delayed against it, but it was ok for me, lol:D:face-icon-small-coo I will admit through the course of the day I did get a few more scratches on my shiny, old sled and had several incidents where I was fractions of an inch from seeing big $$$ signs, lol:face-icon-small-sho:eek::face-icon-small-sho

You can have bragging rights on that second creek crossing Casey, I looked at it and just shook my head, fat guys like me (and their fat sleds) don't fly as far as thin guys on light sleds do :nono:

BTW, my P.O.S. 900 never did get stuck:face-icon-small-win

We do need some more snow though in a bad way, I'll ride ANYTHING, and I don't plan to head up again till it snows some more:face-icon-small-sad

I got 2 vids of the creek/log crossing that I'll get uploading asap.:camera:

A buddy of mine took me over to the Yakama area to ride last year. I really like the snow, more open trees and I even get to see the sun once in a while. We have been parking at the Rimrock Snowpark(all the way at the end of the lake) and riding in on the 1000 road and 1050. Pretty long road ride in to where the riding gets really good. A guy we rode with yesterday said we should park at Tampico(how do you pronounce that). Never been there. Can somebody clue me in.

If your coming over from the west side you're gonna save a lot of time just parking at Rimrock, the Tampico snowpark ("Tam-pick-o") would be about 2 hours more time as you have to come all the way into Yakima and then head back up. The 1000 - 1050 route is the fastest way to get you up into Blue Slide and over to the Ahtanum side. Pinegrass ridge (1204/1205 roads out of Cold Creek snowpark) offers a lot more tree riding and only 1 or 2 hill climbs as it butts up against the Goat Rocks Wilderness. Tampico offers much more terrain and a wider variety of everything... at the expense of a lot more people, but if you get off the beaten path you really don't have to run into anyone if you don't want to.

As a side note, the bottom 1-2 miles on the middle fork are starting to show quite a few slush/gravel spots, your literally riding on 1 inch of snow/ice on that section of trail. The snow parks are still compact snow/ice so that's good at least. We really do need more snow, especially down low. Also watch out for stumps up high and use caution when playing on the slash piles, they are melting and exposing lots of tree/stump fragments. It was like a May day up there yesterday.

I didn't take much for pics yesterday, but here's the 2 vids of the creek/tree area.

(Please ignore my stupid commentary:rolleyes:)

It would be interesting to see how track speed relates to ground speed on a given climb between our sleds... as we always seem to wind up with significantly different mileage readings at the end of the day. By it's very nature, a shorter track is going to spin more than a longer track that has more traction, I'm just curious where the tipping point is between us.

I've got an 84 indy trail mod sled that might keep up!

Thanks Guys... I appreciate it:beer;;)

BTW, I put my stock helix back in 2 weeks ago and I think I like it better than the other one I've been running... seemed to give me a little more track speed back, as well as a little better engine braking but with the hard snow it will take some time to verify.. I was pulling 40+ but none of the climbs were all that long to allow the sled to really accelerate. I have seen over 50 in the past on similar snow with longer pulls, but the sled was a lot younger and I was a lot thinner too:eek::clock::eek:

I also appreciate your patience when my sled was puking coolant out, I was a bit worried as to why as it was only showing 150*, but it turned out I just overfilled it last time I had it in the garage, it never dropped any more after that stop on top of Darland and held around 140* or less all day.
