Sonora Conditions

99.9% sure the gate is closed. The LED sign on 120 down in Oakdale has the road "Closed". But I havent seen it with my own eyes to be 100%. Still awaiting any word though... the "no snow at Kennedy" is a hint I guess. Gonna drive up there possibly Fri (depends on some outside influences) and probably sunday 'fer sure if there are no definite reports.

Why would the gate be closed? Does the gate prevent you from riding ?

Never been to the west side.

Down here on the west side access of Sherman Pass the gate at the entrance to the road gets locked by the county search and rescue "if" they don't have the proper "rescue" manned and ready. So it becomes a tug and war between the NFS duty to provide access and the Sheriff to protect. The gate is at least 7 miles from the trail head and there is a cliff on each side of the gate.

Don it is a caltrans closure at ~6k feet there is no snow but that is the last point they can close off 108 on this side.

Can we make it to snow from the easy side of 108

I will start a new start a new tread for Mt. Rose.I did not ride at Sonora yesterday we went to Mt.Rose.Just to let everyone know there are dangerous conditions out there already. There was a small avalanche at Mt. Rose yesterday.BE CAREFULL !!

Have not been there this season to tell you. I suspect those who are aren't telling ... just yet.

From an earlier post... sounds like there isnt any snow accessible from the gate. I think anyone heading up would be wasting a trip until snow levels drop?

I was down there two years ago in Jan. 2011. We had a lot of snow that year and as you can see there was very little snow at the gate. There is a reason they call the first 1/2 mile up the grade carbide pass. With these high snow levels I think it would be a least a mile to the snow. Sonora has peaks to 12,000 feet but hard to get to some years. We never got there last year.

This is what the closure point looks like

Went down to Sonora last Saturday just to see.First gate is locked.Drove around it because there is no snow. The second gate was locked but the groomer had been there. At the gate was about 6-10" of snow.Didn't bring my sled so I hiked three miles in with the dog.Trail is groomed all the way up but a few pavement patches showing. There is a pretty good base but I wouldn't go back untill they get 3-4 more feet.
