Can you give me some insight to my questions? If you're going back I'm guessing it's worth hitting up.

Maybe you guys could start a Mt Rose thread... for those not familiar with this particular area (Sonora) but looking into going, this info is confusing... even for me. Mt Rose on the Reno side, right? Or is there an area up Sonora called Rose? I see a CA resident posting "heading up to Rose", thats what is throwing me off. Or... is it possible (right NOW) to ride to Mt Rose from the west (Sonora) side? Sorry fellas... i've never sledded Sonora either but I wanna go check it out this upcoming week. So this info is helpful... if we can sort it out? And maybe its me... I would be accessing from Sonora on the Cali side. Maybe there is more than 1 way everyone is accessing "Sonora"?

I think they / we are talking about this Sonora http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonora_Pass

It is in the Sierra Nevadas and completely in California.

It is HWY 108. The east side accessed from HWY 395 it very steep hence you gain altitude quickly and ride above 9000 feet around Leavitt Lake

Closest "town" is http://www.dardanelle108.com/ zip code 95314

Snotel , a government monitoring automonous weather station physically at Leavitt lake (ele 9600 feet) is sending data saying it received over 5 feet of snow (past 7 days) with a total of 70 inches.

Use HWY 108 as a reference cause many places have the same/similar name .

I don't know many other places where you can ride with alot of acreage above 9000 feet.

I know of one trail goin to a plateau north west of Mammoth Lodge. That should be very rideable but htere is probably 50 sledders livin in Mammoth on it right now.

Can anyone guesstimate how many acres are in the Leavitt area above 9000 feet that is available to ride?

Actually... have a house down the hill from Sonora in Oakdale, CA.... so thats the reason for the 108 departure. Know all these highways pretty well from crossing the Sierra by vehicle. Just never had a chance to ever ride it until this season. Now its my NEW backyard! With the Rubies being where I have to "travel" to. Will hauling my sled with me back-and-forth from Cali to Elko all season long... hitting the Sierras where-ever/whenever I can! I-80, hgwy 50, hgwy 4, hgwy 88, hgwy 108, hgwy 120....:jaw: :bounce:

We are talking about the Mt. Rose which is in Nevada on HWY 431, north of lake tahoe, which also has a ski resort by the same name.

Yes, just to be clear; Sonora and Mt Rose are completely different areas and states even. :)

Mt. Rose is just south of Reno, NV; inside the nevada border. But also just north of Lake Tahoe. Here, how bout a map. :D

Couldn't make it to rose today. I'm meeting a family friend at rose tomorrow around noon. Anyone want to hit sonora this week?

Don't know Reno Tom but his above post implies he was at Sonora.

99.9% sure the gate is closed. The LED sign on 120 down in Oakdale has the road "Closed". But I havent seen it with my own eyes to be 100%. Still awaiting any word though... the "no snow at Kennedy" is a hint I guess. Gonna drive up there possibly Fri (depends on some outside influences) and probably sunday 'fer sure if there are no definite reports.
