So how is this downturn in the economy affecting you?

It sure isn't the fun it once was, but we just keep pushing and doing all that we can. I had a feeling things were going to get ugly so we paid everything except the house off and I'm still riding my '03. The business is slow, but it'll be stronger when things turn around and hopefully the market will clean out some of the weaker competition.

Keeping my head down and my chin up!

Vegas has been getting pounded for about 2 years now. I went from 4 fulltime employee's and myself to , just myself one day a week if i am lucky. The only thing that saved me was i am self employed , i never could qualify for one of those sub prime home loans .

Thank god the banks think of small business as risky . Alot of my competiton is going out of business , when it comes back i will be in a really good place. The one thing i have learned from this is , a boom will most likley be followed by a bust.

Cat is shutting down two of my local dealerships I now will have to travel 75 miles for a dealer!

bought my house at the top of the bubble, lost any equity I might have had in it...gonna be tough to move if I wanted too.

I work for the G, so no hurts to the paycheck yet. I expect some income freezes though so that'll have an impact when our inflation goes into the double digits.

I was already tying to pay off all my debt when the crisis hit, so no effect there. I continue to save and pay off debt I incurred when I bought my first house.

My TSP dollar value is going down, I don't dare touch it now! So I left it alone and continue to contribute almost 15% of my pay plus 5% matching funds from the govt. When it comes back I'll be on the gravy train :D

I'm glad I switched companies when I did :D[/QUOTE]

I "f'ed" myself because I switched companies I'd still be working if I would've stayed !!!

our town is actually expanding. 2 big mills shut down here this year and it didn't even phase us, the housing market actually went up. it feels like were isolated thanks to the oil and gas.

still seems pretty busy around there ....notice all the logs are headin to john thses days from Andy Baily ...never did like pulling plywood outa there anyways :beer;

I'm building contractor and don't have much work lined up. I got two new houses and a 1979 mobile home for sale. Haven't had any interest in the houses, but the phone is ringing off the hook for the mobile home. I wish I owned a half a dozen of them right now. Pretty much sucks, but I saw it coming and have most of my crap payed for. I didn't think it would hit as hard and fast as it is. Just another wild ride in life I guess. Hang on as long as you can.

no, as in zero debt, house paid off....is making things livable....a wife that loves her job and makes 100k+ helps a lot too....i've been retired for four years...life as a drone is good......but a lot of people are hurting, and i feel for them, i had plenty of tuf times along the way also....but never give up, things turn around, and those willing to work and squirm will find a way...with all the layoffs, busineses going out, bad credit and banks, overall devalueing of stock market, homes etc.....hold on to what you've got, because we haven't seen the bottom of this bitcch yet....but, a good wife, family, a decent value system for my self esteem...i'm grateful for what God has given me, i have enough....

Short selling the house, bankrupcy..ing the construction business, liquidated all the assets and living on alot of ramen noodles. If it wasn't for a great riding partner, I wouldn't be riding this winter either. Friends are important. Trying to get life situated so I can live on as little as possible and maybe get a job at the corner maverik store or something. I will survive:)

CAT is hurting big time though.

Finning in alberta is laying off people like crazy. Probably a long time coming. They have a PILE of upper middle management that doesnt do f*ck all.

The oil/construction business is slow in alberta. If you're an equipment dealer, your yard is full. If you're a contractor, chances are that your yard is full too.

We've lost a few small jobs. Our big stuff is still going flat out though and we are looking for more iron. Large iron that used to have lead times of 1-2 years is available right now if you have the cash. LOTS of guys backing out of big deals.

For us it will be a good chance to get rid of the 4th line and bring on a few more 1st line people looking for work. Getting good mechanics used to be next to impossible. Now they are calling me.

EDIT: Fort Nelson is nuts. A large majority of the available people/fuel/equipment is up there right now

Just looking at the department of workforce services makes me realize how bad it is. Looking for a job on there I had a more strict search and stull pulled up at least 10-12 pages full of jobs 2 years ago. Now I have a very loose search and pull up 4 pages. Its a bad bad time to try and find a job around here.

Been trying to sell my home for 6 months so I can move to the snow where my retirement home and cabin are. Starting price was $595, lowered to $575 and now at $539......Got me 1st offer today at $485.

Investments have lost $50K +...........

Thankfully, we both have traditional retirements that allow us to bring him $7,200/mo after taxes......We can ride it out.......

I dont know how bad it is where you are but I sure hope you took that offer if you wanna sell within 5-10 yrs...
