Sled sales way down this year????

Id rather spend 11k on a new axys than 60-100k on a towboat. Same season length

Here is my reply to the "this sport is getting too expensive" crowd

Great price but still too expensive for some of us. That sled is priced almost $2000 more than the most expensive vehicle I have ever purchased and I am 53. I have had snowmobiles since I was 12 and have never spent more than $1500 on a snowmobile. I have never sent any of my snowmobiles to a dealer for repair. If I could not find sleds for under $2000 and have the ability to fix them myself I would not be able to participate in this fine sport. The snowmobile manufacturers and many of the aftermarket companies have forgotten us low budget riders long ago. I guess I will stick to my old Mountain Cat and keep dabbling with my vintage sleds and keep shopping for my snowmobile needs on E-bay.

I admire your financial discipline Duane!

There is a "trickle down" that goes along with this as well.
I have a '13 model of the above sled. This should be a $6,999 sled, but now would struggle to get $4,500 for it.
So let's say a "09 should be worth $4,000, what's it worth? $2,500? and so on.
This is a great time for people to get into the sport, or add to their fleet.

I think the rebates came just after the first because that is part of the contract with snow check buyers. Most dealers will tell you sleds are a tough sell after the first of the year. They have also been overstocked on holdovers for a few years. Seems like a good idea to blow out remaining inventory with a good rebate so you do not have as many market busting holdovers next year.

I will say that buying a new truck made a new sled seem like an easy decision. Everything is more expensive. The new sleds are also a whole heck of a lot more fun to ride. For me, it is my main vice. I spend to much on it but the cost is worth it to me. I keep the newest I can around. My '16 was my first new, current year, sled ever. I have had a number of new holdovers but they were always the same as the new ones model wise.

I think we may see a small bite taken out by snow bikes too. I know a few guys that have switched that otherwise probably would have bought new sleds. I still can't for the life of me see the reason you would want a bike but, to each his own.

I took a beating on my '14 Pro trade back in November. It was the right thing to do for me because I have ridden my Axys every weekend since I made the deal. I didn't lose out on a $2000 discount, I gained two months of riding. This is part of the allure of a snow check too, they are supposed to show up first. Which is great if you get the snow.

This reminds of something a buddy of mine (who used to sell cars) told me about large purchases.

"The best deal for you, is the one you got!"

I believe there is a lot of truth to that statement. I suppose my point in all of this is that I don't think there is "blame" to be assessed to a dealer for passing on factory rebates.

Its just the nature of the beast. There are a lot of guys that want to ride the latest and greatest (im one of them) and check a new sled every year. Figure it cost about $3,500 to 4,000 bucks a year to ride a new sled. My sleds that are for sale each fall generally have low miles with 3 yrs of warranty left. That being the case I am able to get a pretty good number for them when they go. But you have to keep doing it and be willing to loose the $4,000 each year.

If you don't want to ride the latest and greatest, buy a leftover and save on that end. But your buying low and going to end up selling low as well. So I think it all pans out. The new sled each year Im willing to pay for so that hopefully I don't have to worry about breakdowns ..I know breakdown happen on new sleds, but I have been very lucky with that. Just have to remember if you are serious about riding, there is nothing cheap about snowmobiling. I accept the nature of how the sales go, but the hard pill to swallow is when it doesn't snow and your sitting with a brand new sled in the garage with no miles on it. That's when it gets really expensive.

Certainly not. I don't think anyone was implying that at all.
That's what the rebate is for, to assist the dealer in selling their inventory.
My point was that it was not responsible for dealers to sell their sleds to customers hundreds of miles outside their service area and it is very unwise for the customer to buy from a dealer hundreds of miles away as well.

Just saw an add 2016 t3 163 $9800. full warranty, 0% finance. Either crappy snow or some sigificant changes for 17. Me thinks bad snow year. And we snowcheck why?

Dealer costs

So does anyone know if all dealers pay the same price from Arctic Cat(or any other brand). Or do the big time dealers get better deals from the manufacturer than a small Mom and Pop dealer.

If I understand correctly? The more sleds a dealer orders every year the better the kick backs when they sell. But the initial dealer price is the same up front. Dont know for sure tho?

I think it used to be the more sleds you ordered the better your floor plan financing deal was through the manufacturer. Not as important on new sleds, but the longer you have them the more it would hurt a smaller dealer.

If you think sled sales are down this year, wait until next year, were just starting to see the slide of our so called booming economy again now, the stock markets are dropping like a rock, chinas in huge trouble from a falsely inflated economy which is going to affect north america in a big way, over 50,000 jobs have been lost alone in the northern alberta oil sector, all paying in around the 100,000 a year or more, thats a ton of high paying jobs were people had disposable income for toys which doesnt exist anymore.
Is it rebates and cheap prices from dealers your seeing or is it dealers realizing that 2016 might be turning into another tough year financially for north americans and getting there product out the door so there not sitting on inventory.
Now I know everyone hasn't been hit by this, but if you have anything to do with oil and gas or have any money in stocks involved with the energy sector, your not buying a new sled in 2016, it doesn't matter what the finance
interest rates are,
Its not just the sled you need, its the fuel to run them and your pickup to get to the mountain, chances are you need a deck or trailer and some klim gear, a avy pack, beacon, carbon fiber helmut and matching goggles, some klim boots, money for beers and hotels, some spare belts and oil. You assume the oil and gas you need for them would be almost free right now, who would ever think you can buy a barrel of oil for cheaper than your 24 pack of beer,
2016 and 2017 could be tough years for anyone looking to spend 13000 plus tax on a new sled,
They are over priced along with new vehicles, before the recession you could buy a new f 150 platinum for 40,000. Ford almost goes bankrupt in 2008, the people or tax payer as we call ourselves bails them out, and to thank us they come back and now charges almost 75,000 for the f 150 platinum, were the suckers and if we keep shelling out the ridiculous money they want for things these days they'll keep charging us for them.
I know you only live once and this is problem the wrong forum to put out a rant like this because clearly if your on here you enjoy the finer things in life like sledding, but sometimes we are our own worst enemies and the corporate world just loves to see us keep falling into there traps.
So skidoo or polaris puts out 0% interest for 84 months for a new sled, consumer comes in and buys this severely depreciating asset with 500.00 down, and goes into a payment plan for 84 months, the sled is now depreciating at a rate 5 times faster than principal than the loan is getting paid down, 3 years later the consumer looks at his old out dated sled and principal left owing, he owes 9000.00 for something thats worth 5000.00, he says well Im not paying double what the sled is worth, and hands in the keys, exact same thing happened in 2008 with real-estate, except we all expect real-estate to increase in value and keep our equity safe, sleds are a known deprecating asset,
Anyway just some food for thought,
I love sledding and have been guilty of buying new sleds all the time, just thought I put this out there

^this guy gets it. Alaska is getting hammered by low oil prices right now too, and our last three winters have been mediocre. There will be a lot of overstock next year.

Dude, your English teacher (assuming you had one) is about to have a stroke over your lack of sentence structure up there ^^. . .just sayin' :)

^yeah bruh we can't let THE MAN tell us how much to pay for a truck! How dare they increase their prices regardless of what people are willing to pay for them! If you don't like it don't buy a "platinum" edition truck :face-icon-small-con
