Sicamous avalanche

Why is everybody pushing to buy a beacon???More than likely that will just help the rescuer find your lifeless body unless you are really lucky and not buried to deep or someone happens to see you get buried and they arent in the path of the avy can find you quickly.I am reading these posts and that seems to be everyones solution to being safe its not a safety device I dont think, you have to stay out of those areas of high risk is the only way to stay safe.

Plus, if someone buys a sled w/a built in beacon and figures "hey my sled has one, I'm good," sets off an avy, loses their sled and gets buried nobody can find them. When the person croaks the family sues the sled company because the sled was found but not the rider.
Buy a beacon, learn to use it, take it with you regardless of how safe you think your day is going to be. CHIT HAPPENS! Be prepared.

I'm not saying having this type of feature should replace a beacon worn on your person. THe thing is, that people who already wear beacons aren't going to stop because they have one built into their sled. But if it saves the life of someone who couldn't be bothered... .why not? It's lame to say that the search would end up being for a sled and not a victim. Help is help no matter where it comes from. I never ride without a beacon. EVER. I'm just saying that any extra means of locating device is a good one. And the rider was lost on Owlshead was found *with* his sled wasn't he? He wasn't wearing a beacon but if there had been something built into his machine, maybe he would've been found faster.
As for a sled company being sued, if someone is wearing a beacon and they're buried and aren't found in time whats stopping the family (or whoever) from suing the company that made the beacon - for any number of reasons?

You dont want a beacon in the sled.If you were 100 feet from the sled and they were diggin 20 feet down for an hour and found your sled and not you that wouldn't be good.

Its your best chance! If you all have a beacon, this is your only chance to make it out alive. If you do not survive and its the rescue personnel out there looking for you, it may save them time in locating your body. Along with that, they (S&R) have to spend less time in a potentially dangerous position. What if its your buddy in an Avy, no beacon = no hope

I know but alot of people think if they have a beacon and a pack it dont matter what the snow conditions are. They think they are bullet proof then.I wouldnt never not wear one but just because I have one I dont risk my life.

Who TF cares about the sled, thats what metal detectors are for.
Wear a god damn beacon to minimize risk for those riding around you, if you cant be bothered to wear or buy one, do everyone else a favour, stay the fu(k at home.

I wasn't pointing a finger at you, just saying that some folks might not use their noodle and figure that a beacon on the sled is good enough.

A beacon, probe and a good ball on your shoulders. Ball and education for safety, beacon and probe for survival. (You or others) I have all the tools and dont think I'm bullet proof. If those that think that they are its time to drain the pool

Sorry if I'm missing something here but how does my wearing a beacon minimize the risk for fellow sledders.??

It not just a personal choice you Idiots, what about all those poeple that spent 3-4 hrs on that hill probing for someone that didn't think he needed a beacon. Your endangering other peoples lives as well as yours.

^^^^^^bingo!!!!!!! :beer; :beer; :beer; :beer; X100

oh I know, no finger pointing... I just needed to defend my statement. I don't want anyone to think that I would advocate not having your beacon or taking the proper precautions, just because your sled is equipped. I'm just thinking of ways to help make sure that every one goes home alive.

cause if your buddy gets burried you can find him. I can't believe how many people on here think that a beacon is only for thier safety. It' for everyone you ride withs safety.

I am thinking of presenting a motion to the local clubs to make it mandatory for riders to have beacons at least,

absolutly! I think anywhere a club has someone @ the trail head they should check for beacons & probes.

Revd, I might be hard to make it mandatory, due to liability reasons or who knows what else, how ever I'm going to bring it up and see what I can do.

For the people who think a beacon is only for finding a body, give your head a shake! All I will say is in this case it may of given the victim a chance. Any chance at all is worth it, even if it's slim. With a signal it wouldn't of taken long to find his position, especially being close to the end of the slide area. Lots of what if's and if only's.

I take it the point you're attempting to make is so if I get buried, the rescuers will spend less time trying to locate me thus spending less time in harm's way of a possibly impending second avy.
Well said, not that tactfully but thank you. :beer;

Life is evolution. We can never wind the clock back. God, I wish we could because we know so much more now than when we needed it. :( Stuck with what has happened is what we are. We learn and change to adapt to survive. Every time we suffer a loss like this passion runs high here. That's good. it creates discussion and THAT alone is good. It is about our experiences, our lessons learned and our desire not to repeat bad things. I suggest re-reading this whole post and seeing what you can glean out of it that is postive. Lots of great opinions here and others that just are not yet developed from experience. All have a voice and some voices just help us reconfirm bad or good what we have learned from the past. Forget the tiny details and agree to help one another learn, to help one another stay safe in any way possible. I think that over the years before we 'knew' all the risks or had great on-line avy reports, it could have been any of us on any given day back then. "there, but for the grace of God, go I." Now we know better. Teach someone what you know and learned possibly the hard way. take from all of these deaths possibly a desire to NOT have it repeated if possible.

:(

We dont want more rules and regulations. Its time people think for themselves.I cant stand the thought of one more government regulation. You cant work or play anymore without someone telling you what equipment you need.I dont think there is a law to always wear a parachute when skidiving people just do it.You would think mountain riding would be the same for wearing a beacon.

your probably right Arcticdoo, they probably can't stop them from riding there but maybe if a guy says he doesn't have one, the person @ the trail head could go off on a bit of a rant on them & educate them on the dangers to other people as well as them. Might help??
