You should be able to get at least 1/2 to 3/4 closer. I typically hold the lenses about 1" maybe a little more from what I am taking a pic of. I am at work but I will see if I can get some pics of mine taken for a comparison.
Either way you might be ahead to do like Rob said and mark it with some dye.

My camera has some sort of auto focus that I am still learning about, it seemed if I went any closer the camera was not able to focus on it. Those pictures were probably about three inches away.
That may be a casting "ridge" that has broken off and left a little depression in the clutch which may be why a can get a knife blade into it. Either way we will mark it to see if it spreads. Take care...Jeff

I have his three year old daughter asking him if he as taken his Metamucil, you should hear her try to say Metamucil, it is a riot! Sometimes I don't think he sees the humor in it
