Searching for my next sled! What do you expect to see for 2010?

This four stroke crap is driving me nuts!

Six riding seasons ago I bought a 2003 Yamaha RX-1M in the late summer of 2002 and the damn thing just keeps going and going. I have lightened it up drastically and gone to a 162" Camo Extreme and it pulls a solid 10,250+ RPM while climbing and frankly it still makes me smile.

The problem with these four strokes is they seem to last forever!

This makes it extremely tough to justify replacing a sled that still runs like a top. Especially when you're trying to convince the wife you need a new sled when in reality you're just tiring of riding the same sled for so long.

My wife is tickled I haven't had to pay for any rebuilds over the time I have had this sled (like the two stroke sleds I owned before it) and she just wants me to ride it forever.

I know bolting on a turbo is no-brainer option but, when a sled is as long in tooth as my 03, I question the logic. Help me out here, I am thirsting for some new technology.

The bottom line is, like it or not I'm on the hunt for my next sled. I plan to ride a Nytro MTX, a M1000, a Summit XP800 and a Dragon 800 to see which one best suits my riding style.

In reality, by the time I get to demo ride all the above sleds I'll probably end up ordering a 2010 sled. What do you guys suggest or see in you crystal ball for 2010?

I know the EPA emissions tighten down another notch which may change some things fro 2010 and that Yamaha is certainly overdue to replace the Apex Mountain. Other than that my view of the future is quite limited.

Help me out on this one guys.

Thanks

seriously though, Yami supposed to come out with a whole new chassis for the Apex. I'm watching for that.

LMFAO! ya, called the sno-bama....

LMAO!!
That's a gooder.

Seriously, I expect to see more 4 stroke sleds coming from both Cat and Poo.
I hear rumours of polaris putting their 4 stroke turbo in a mountain chassis. Don't know how accurate it is. Of cource I have been looking for that for 3 years now.

Who ever comes out with a 500lb turbo sled, sells me a sled.

Yes, I do love the fourstrokes for their reliability and durability but, for crying out loud, I didn't intend to ride it forever!

I know when a Skidoo (I grew up riding Skidoos) XP is 100 lbs lighter than the Yamaha equivalent that throwing the sled around has to be WAY easier but, I sure like a sled I can go logging with while boondocking and not fear bent, buckled or distorted front end parts.

My old one ton has cut many cords of wood (with the front A arms) without any damage but, I have to wonder how the new super lightweight sleds will fare when subjected to similar off trail adventures.

So, I guess I want a sled that's durable, reliable and performs well in the deep stuff. If I can get all those attributes in a lightweight sled, so much the better.

I had one of the 03 RX-1's too, probably should have just modded the snot out of it to drop the weight which was the only issue I had with it but, I rode a friends 04 rev and loved it, so I bought an 07 xrs, I really liked the 07 but had the clutch-crank problems, I just want a reliable pull and go sled, now the 09 xp x should be here, the 08 guys say I will love it if BRP got their poop grouped. The addition of e-tech to the 800 if it works out should be awesome. If I would have just put the cost of one sled into the mods for the rx-1 I would probably be just as well off. I think you were smart

I got a Backup for ya if that Pine Cone takes you out:face-icon-small-ton Just have to hang on!

I heard that POO was coming out with a new chassis in 2010??

i heard the same, and supposedly are dropping the 7 and gonna take a stab at a 1000. i was told this by a buddy who was supposedly told by a poo racer so dont know how accurate it is.

Blah blah blah.. I have been hearing of this poo 4banger 1050 rumor forever.. I think if they would just wake up and build it in the racer chassis with a mountain track they would own new sales..
But in reality doo is going to come out with the 4banger they have in the trail sled and put it in a mtn sled prob with a turbo, Poo will probably put the 750 turbo in a raw chassis. Cat will put the 4 stroke in their trail sled in an m chassis maybe with a turbo.. The yamaha will come out with a new sled for the apex chassis with nearly the same motor,, That is my opinion. Also I am a diehard poo rider. I am just sick and tired of poo not listening to the consumer..

Dear Polaris, BUILD THE RACER INTO A MTN SLED WITH A 1050 4 stroke..

The new 2 strokes are light enough you can turn them and go around the trees... :)

If you miss working on sleds and worring about reliability but have a light weight easy to ride sled the new summits are a great option. I have learned a lot about clutches and gearing since I bought my xp last year. Keeps me challenged out there in the mountains.

Come on guys, how is a guy supposed to get firewood if you go AROUND the trees? :D

I have done the same thing for several seasons now. I start thinking about buying a new sled, I sign up for numerous demo rides to see what really clicks for me, I never get called by the dealers so I really don't get to decide what I want. In addition to that, once the riding season starts I think, what am I thinking, next years sleds will be released in a couple months and there may be something really cool coming out so I better wait to see what's coming out for the next season. Then the whole process starts again......

I'm quite certain at least one of the following will occur for 2010.

Yamaha offers a factory turbo at around 200-220 hp or a naturally aspirated 170hp-180 hp sled with a four year warranty.....................

Skidoo turbos their new four stroke (that's a no brainer) and puts it in a mountain sled...................

Arctic Cat offers their new four stroke turbo in a moutain chassis.

Polaris offers their FST in a mountain chassis.

I guess the question is............ do I continue down the fourstroke road?

I could very easily go with an 800 or 900 or even a 1000 ETEC if it works out as well with the sleds as it does with the outboards.

I love the turn key reliability, being able to run 87 octane gas, not having to buy injection oil, not smelling like two stroke injector oil, etc

But it's the weight.............. I would love to ride a Nytro MTX, a XP800,
M800 and Dragon 800 in close succession and see how much I can really FEEL the weight difference when riding. I know having the above benefits is worth something to me but how much rideability am I willing to give up to have it?

how about a hybred with a turbo battery booster by Yamaha. I bet that would tip that scales a little aggresive.

Do you continue down the 4 stroke path???? YES!!!! 10 years from now a large percentage of riders will be riding 4 strokers. I'm pretty sure that my 08 D8 will be the last two stroke I'll own. The longevity of the 4 stroke really appeals to me!

Fourstroke motors are great! I absolutley love mine but, with that love comes a weight penalty.

The problem with all this wonderful engine longevity is that chassis technological advances continue to march on but, now you're now saddled with an old style chassis with a relatively low mile fourstroke engine that will last forever.

Honestly, if the lightweight Skidoo's ETEC sleds make the kind of impact on fourstroke sales that I expect to see, Yamaha may be forced to bring their HDPI direct injection technology to its snowmobile line.

I'm not getting any younger and the thought of buying a real light weight sled is becoming almost more appealing than the all the benefits I'm reaping from having a fourstroke.
