because my great grandparents had "owners" and worked on plantations until 1925, according to my grandmother... And even though Washington abolished the laws that slavery was legal in the 1860's it was never enforced and wasn't legally abolished and deemed illegal until the 1930s....

I think it's fine for everyone to tell light hearted jokes. I never said it wasn't. Some of the jokes went too far. I don't think it's acceptable or respectable that we still use racial slurs against eachother. I personally never use the N word, unless we're talking about racism, political issues and history. Lots of people rob banks, speed while driving, drink while driving and what not, so does that make it acceptable because everyone else is??
I think most of you are reading a bit too far into what I'm saying. Humour is a great thing, I love to laugh and I believe everyone on here does as well. I just think there is a line to be drawn in how far it goes. I like grape soda, and I love chicken. Just like Dave from Montana loves to brand cattle. And Davinder down in Surrey runs the 7-11.
But I think there is a very distinct difference between these mostly humorous and not hate inspired comments, and using the "N" word. Just the association with the word and how it was used in the past brings up thoughts of hatred and disrespect. To me using that word, is like referring to your 19 yo daughter as a great sluut or whoore. Not appropriate and I'd expect to be beaten, shot, or kicked for it.
Just ask yourself this when posting a joke. Would you openly say it to a black person in their face? Or whatever race the joke is about? Would you use the "N" word with a black person around? If you would I think you are ignorant and show no respect.
As for my "America being ignorant", I apollogize and admit that was similar to what I was *****ing about. Every country has ignorant morons, just seems like there's so many in America....
joking!But in closing, I'm all for jokes I just think the whole reference to hanging and the N word is too far.
And yes I'd buy you a bear, not a beer(you can buy one from me though), we have and abundance of them around this time of year and instead of having the local conservation officer "destroy" them, I'd rather buy you one to have as a pet

and i would assume that being a bar owner and disliking the n word so much that you wouldn't paly any music in the bar that had that word in it right, even edited out?

Hate to say it JK, but you got yourself a fire storm started. Served in the Navy, had many black friends while I served. The one's that I got along with, didn't bring up race and the poor me b#llsh!t. They worked side by side with me during flight opps, did their jobs and drank beer beside me in ports off duty. Far as I'm concerned a man is a man and a cry baby is a cry baby, skin color make's no difference. There's great black and white people in this country. On the flip side, there's also total pieces of sh!t on both sides. When we can all agree to that, instead of thinking just one side is the racist biggets, we just might get somewhere. Sure you probably are a decent dude and I'd sit down and drink a beer anytime with ya, but bout the time the whole race card starting being played, I'd be switching to straight shots at the end of the bar by myself.........

The are strong black advocates against rappers using the N word. The bar I own is small and doesn't generally play hip hop or rap. Mostly live music, rock and roll and some jazz. I don't think i've ever heard the N word dropped in any music that's played here...

I have to agree with you. These jokes went way to far.
I used to work with a few Hispanics that would call each other wet backs like no tomorrow. but I let one slip out one time and they had a $hit fit. I apologized but I could never under stand why it was ok for them but not for me. Even though they called me white bread all the time.
It would make me happy if I never heard the N words again.

I didn't and I personally don't tolerate that sh!t! I kinda weighed in on this late and as I stated, I'd sit down and have a beer with you anytime. Didn't necessarily mean you indirectly as saying poor me, but there are as you know, plenty of folks that are and I do have a problem with that. Once again, that is on both sides of the fence black and white. The fact you are a working man running two bars good for you, more power to ya. I have respect for anyone out there making themselves and honest living....

I shall semi proudly admit I may be one of the most racist redneck mo' fo's one here based upon my upbringing in the south. Born in a generation that was taught would never see a black or women president. Yes, some went a bit to far, for a public forum. But you have to know, regardless of anyone liking them or not, they are going on. To put them out in public may be the first step, to stopping them.
You say that there are groups that are trying to take the N** word out of music and popular black culture. Granted that is a great start, but whom is there to take the opposite stand.
Jesse Jackson, may have done great things in his past, but currently he and Al Sharpton, have become hothing but reverse racist.

It was illegal the day the 13th amendment went into effect(1865), whether it was enforced or not.
I'm not saying you're wrong but I've never heard anything like that from anyone, whether it be people, news, historians, etc.

Couple thoughts:
It's kind of hard for me to grasp what racism truly is when the town I live in is 98% white.
As far as groups calling referring to themselves with inappropriate slang language I think of it this way: If as snowmobilers we call each other rednecks we tend to wear that with distinction with pride; how angry do we get when the liberals or environmentalists call us rednecks. Another example, watch Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher and listen to him generalize about conservatives, republicans or anybody who lives in midwesten or western states (other than So. Cal). Although it may be in the context of a joke, it is still frustrating.
Maybe Chris Rock has a point when he describes the current state of black and white in America when he says that there isn't a white man in America who would trade places with him...and he's rich and famous.

If I were black (or any minority) I would be elligible for MANY more scholarships, based on nothing more than my minority status.
