Plasma or LCD

Where else would I come for TV advice but to a Sledding site!

The old toshiba is due for retiement, I used to hear plasma was the way to go, now I'm hearing LCDs last longer. I'm confused.................whoever I talk to, it seems what they bought is the best.................

I dunno.
I was told plasma creates more heat.
I was told plasma has better picture if the room is dark.
I was told LCD has better picture if the room is well lit.

I went with LCD, happy so far, for whatever that's worth.

get a projector and a sheet ..when you are out campin you can watch movies by the fire on an 8x10 ..pretty cool ...but seriously I heard LCD are somewhat tempermental ...got a couple plasmas seem to work good ...who else has input my 55 Toshiba is startin to get some miles on here ....

I went Plasma for the picture quality in the price and size I was looking for. But I've heard bad things about plasma in high altitudes so you may want to consider that. If I were you I would go to a good TV shop and look at everything they got in your size and price range. If your looking for the ultimate go Pioneer Plasma Period But that's not gonna be cheap. Plasma does give off a little more heat and uses a little more electricity, They are also a Glass screen so reflections are an issue in rooms with lighting or lots of windows. Not so much an issue with LCD.

I just recently went through this as well. On the smaller tv's I was looking at(32") the Plasma's had a better picture. This was in many plases, so it wasnt the setup, or lighting.

Bought a 32" Plasma Visio and love it. I have a bunch of windows in my room, that used to put alot of glare on my old tube TV, but now it is much less of a glare, almost none.

if I were buying a new tv (lol), i'd go with an LCD. Parents have a 37" Sharp Aquos LCD in a room that's got several windows across from the TV and there's very little washout and reflection in the picture in just about every light condition. HD programming is pretty cool on that.

Plasma's nice, but I don't think that technology (especially reliability) is really where it needs to be for the general consumers yet.

Don't listen to me, i'm watching a 27" tube tv that's probably 10 years old. I did upgrade to a digital receiver this weekend though

I dunno.
I was told plasma creates more heat.....AGREED
I was told plasma has better picture if the room is dark.....AGREED
I was told LCD has better picture if the room is well lit.......HEARD THAT, NOT SURE IF TRUE.

I have a Pioneer Elite Plasma and love it. Keeps me warm in the winter. Great picture for every type of show....sports especially. Alt in Calgary 3600'asl.

Both LCD and Plasma are great, new 1080p LCD's offer a great picture and improved off angle viewing compared to old LCD's. You choose, can't really go wrong with either right now if you buy a solid brand.

I have 2 42 plasma's and 2 37 LCD's. They all work great. I can't tell the difference in picture quality between them. The Plasma's they say will flame out after 10 years or so but I doubt by then it will really matter. Everything nowaday's is absolete way before then anyway.

I've got the costco vizio plasma at my home and just bought one for my grandmother whose home is at 7000 elev.
The problem with plasma at elevation is you will hear a buzzing noise which is the fan (maybe scavaging for air). This did happen but it wasn't anything you would hear unless you knew about it and were listening for it.

I prefer Plasma over LCD, as I for some reason notice the pixle jump on the LCD tv's. The newest Sony has something that loads the picture twice as fast as a standard LCD, and for this reason they say that the pixle movement is no longer an issue (this is mainly for high speed sports programs). My father bought the 60" sony with this and I still can see the movement. The picture quality on this unit will blow you away.

Go down to Best Buy and talk to the TV crew. You'll be there for hrs, and get several different opinions, that are for the most part informative.
For brands, I'd look at the Samsung or Sony for the top, all the others being a step down, but comparable to each other. Brands like NewVision, Pioneer Premier being something that you don't even ask how much, its the best.

heh, i don't know about the guys at best buy... dude i talked to saturday didn't seem to know his head from his ... uh huh. Usually that stuff amuses me, but this guy was more irritating than amusing.

Samsung is on my wall...Plasma, yes it puts off heat, but not a big deal...picture quality is incredible...

the room is very bright, and do not notice an issue...generally speaking if you are wanting screen for lots of action/sports stuff...I think Plasma is a better choice, as DMK stated...

there are some great screens reasonably priced right now..so, do some research and get a great one, you will love it!!!

We have a plasma in the movie room and an LCD in normal livingroom. Plasma makes us kinda nervous if you don't press play on DVD words burn into screen fast and you can still see them for a while. So if you have kids who want to play games the picture is awesome but don't pause. LCD is really worry free. Both Vizio

Never use comparisons from the stores.... These are stup by high school kids.... I could take a $1000 cheapy and make it look 100x's better then a $5000 set... Also, never listen to the reps at the stores, as was mentioned, these idiots don't know there heads from there @ss's.

Plasma's have come along way... The altitude will notbe a concern for your elevation... The biggest issue will be light and heat... The plasma's to disspate much more power then an LCD... They are also known to have horrible glare in well lit rooms, where the LCD's don't. I personally went with an LCD. If you go this route, make sure you go with one that has higher frame rate conversion, 120Hz vs 60Hz. Also make sure you get one that is 1080p capable, as you will enjoy a blu-ray player much more.

Here's a few websites that have ample information.

HDTV Resolution Explained

Hope these help with your decision.

I do a lot of research, sometimes it pays off and sometimes it's just a waste of time.

From what I have read, heard, and expierenced the LCD is the way to go. You may get more TV for the buck going with Plasma or DLP's or something else but everything I see always says LCD in the long run.

I have a projection HDTV, as well as a LCD TV. I can tell you the LCD puts out some heat!

ive read, 42" or less LCD , bigger than that Plasma or Projector.

just dont buy a Visio, they suck
