P-22 failure on 9R

it the damn spinny thing in the middle. cats been playing with this since 2018. who knows if theyve finally got a winner, they dont sell enough units.
early Adapts were failing on the internet too though.

I work on the P22 daily from customers..There are a lot of issues that need to be addressed..the one issue I am seeing more anymore is the softer alum they use..the belt is digging into the sheaves after only a couple hundred miles...When I drill to balance the material is very soft, no heat treating at all...the belt clearance is way to big, most are .050-.070 that is way to much (should be .010-.020) to get any bottom end, thus leading to the belt digging into the sheaves when taking off!!! slamming...I could go on and no seeing issues......I get why Polaris made a P22 clutch, the weights are getting bigger and bigger, and the P85 was not designed for 86 Gram weights and is very narrow in the spider for wide weights...Could be a easy fix redesigning the spider on the P85...One a quick side not we make the P85 LIGHTER than the P22...wont touch the TSS-04 with out the defection bolt!!!!! bad deal...
Is it even possible to take the P22 belt clearance from .070 to .015?? I think you can take 15 or 20 thou out of the cover/spider but aren't the sheaves coming into contact then as well?

TJ has been working on it and has been able to get it done. I’ll let him explain if he wished to share, but it’s proprietary.
The P22 has .040” less shift than a p85 and over .100” less face.

He's a mf'n sorcerer so I'm not surprised... I am contemplating a Gates belt to take up some slack, looks like about .030". I see they have a new EPDM/Aramid belt called the 'Redline'. Are the Carbon belts still the 'go to' or is there some merit in this new design? I'll take belt performance over longevity (within reason) if I have a choice

We have 3 clutches out there being tested that we have worked on...we can adjust the belt clearance to what ever we need, (we do .020) even add shims if belt to tight..We have addressed the sheaves closing further, and it is NEEDED! most belt run 1/2-3/4 short of the top of the clutch...we get them to close .050 further so far...Never had to machine the spider or the cover to do this..One report said the bottom end with the closer belt clearance was much better...Waiting for the top end track speed gain when clutches closer further..What we did makes total sense once you see where the spider run in accordance to the fixed sheave post..Should help clutch tightening issue as well..Keep you posted...

I had a clutch bolt fail on my 22 boost with just over 1000 miles. It broke at the threads inside the crank. Polaris is replacing both clutches. Dealer checked runout on the crank and said the crank is fine.

Chadley, (forum's biggest nuisance)

Chilly? No way. He’s our resident forum expert. The boost is a boat anchor, can’t be adjusted. Stock clutching calibration is the best, clutch misalignment doesn’t matter, and the P-22 is rock solid. And don’t forget……Every one else are poor people.

You can’t pay enough for that kind of entertainment.

I made it over 500 miles yesterday and the old P22 didn't explode. Finally got a deep storm. How's my stock clutching sound Rusty??? Am I leaving 30 hp on the table??? [emoji849]

I think you could get a job in the Polaris warranty department. Just tell everyone you ride harder than they do and haven’t had an issue.

I would definitely tell Polaris I want a whole new motor. When that clutch came off that motor had to over rev rpm major big time. That will stretch your rods for sure.

I had .085 belt to sheave and after I opened up the P22 last week, it was obvious. I took .060 out for .010 clearance on a new and abnormally wide 1.420" Polaris belt. It completely changed the attitude of the shift and the bottom end. It felt like a 900 properly launching in 1st gear for the first time in it's life. Now to solve the torsional load that's eating drive springs and spring cups, with something that's a step up on Delrin.
