OK, so I sold my 07 and....

I sold my 07 Summit X 800r 159 the other day. It had 650 miles on it. Had carbon fibre skid plate, CF a-arm guards and CF 8" rear wheels. Had a 860 Sled Shed big bore with less than 300 miles on it....never a hint of problems. The crank was checked and had zero runout when the BB was done. A thermostat and temp guage was added when the BB was done. Rode the sled on March 20 to 22nd and it worked GREAT.....I have several witnesses to this point.

ANYWAYS......I sold it CHEAP. 8500 bucks....priced to get it out of the garage as I just recently got hooked up with my ol' lady. I'm SURE I priced this thing about 4 grand too cheap....but that's OK. So a nice young fella buys it and takes it home....everyone is all happy. He phones today at 4pm and tells me, "I only got 6 km on it and it blew up". I ask a few questions and it sounds like its just spewing antifreeze....not really "blown up". Sounds to me like it got overheated.....but he insisted that, " there was powder and I had the scratchers down".

I feel bad. I have sold 4 sleds through SW over the years and never had a complaint. My sleds are always in tip-top shape to the best of my knowledge. The bill of sale says "as is" under special conditions so legally, I know that I don't have to do anything. What should I do? To be honest, the young fella that bought it seems like a nice guy....but my gut feeling is that he over heated it on an icey trail and now wants out of the deal.

tough situation but ANYONE and EVERYONE should know this is the risk you take when you buy used.

Tough crap- but ohh well--

I feel for the guy but "stuff happens"- builds character ;)

I would say If you feel "that bad" then me myself, I would offer to help the guy rebuild and get it back running. But thats about ALL I would offer.

hooked up with my ol' lady

forget the sled, **** happens, tell us about your gal!

I guess you should find out if it was just overheating.
If so, it is his lack of knowledge. Overheating, on many cases results in little damage to the cylinders.
When I ride in low snow conditions, I always check for the temps, and symptoms.
Sold as is is sold as is.

Tough call, but if you buy a used mod sled, that is what it is... MODDED and NOT NEW

Well for starters its a mod sled, second he bought it used, at the end of the day its buyer beware! My guess is he overheated the sled anyway!

I don't think it can overheat.....unless the temp sensor was removed/bypassed. It should hit a certain temp and it will do it's thing to protect the engine from damage, not sure if it retards the ignition or exactly what happens. Mine did it today.....brand new crate engine, first ride and it is spewing coolant from between the case halves, before I knew there was an issue the red light on the gauge came on and it had VERY little power (failsafe overheat mode or some crap like that), as soon as they cool they are fine.
Any way, that's the risk of buying a used sled, my sled was absolutely flawless up to the moment it broke a piston skirt and put it through the case.....you NEVER know when something might fail.

Have him bring it back for you to look at and ride. You know that sled better than anyone else. If it truly did blow up, it would have done it to you in the next 6 KM also.
If it was no fault of his, and you had not of sold it, you would have been sitting on a blown sled yourself anyhow.
As a good gesture, I think I would stand behind the sled I just sold if it truley blew up. Maybe offer to pay half the repairs and do the work yourself.

I am thinking he just over heated it and being a new sled owner, had a panic attack and called the guy he bought it from.

Tough situation to say the least. Same thing happened to my family with an old enticer. Sold it in nice running condition, a week later the crank bearing locked up. By law, we would not have had to do anything. We split the cost of the repairs. If nothing else, I slept better about it.

Sleds are just like a hand grenade ones you pull the cord its only a time matter before it blows up....

No just kidding thats a bad deal to be caught up in. Sold as is makes it not your responsibility (its his sled) but sleeping with a clear concense goes a long ways...

If you built it and know how I tear it down for him..he pays for the parts???? Still his sled....

I have bought a few sleds used that I had to rebuild the engine on right off the bat, stuff happens and that is why it is USED. If the guy wanted a sled with a warranty he should have purchased new, that is what I do now.

I wouldn't sweat it, work with the guy and be nice and patient but do not offer to buy or split costs of any sort, that is just like admitting something. The best I have done is offer to rebuild an engine for no charge (labor only) for a good friend who has purchased a few sleds from me, he purchased all the parts and delivered them to me.

do you have a dealer near by that could maybe give a neutral opinion, this time of year its more then likely exactly what you said or he just got on it and pinned it till it droped, either way you said he seems like a good guy, i think i would look at it.

Selling sleds, bikes, and atv's all the time, albeit at a dealership where we warranty used units for 30 days. However.......
I also see and hear a lot of deals done privately from person to person.....it's not a guilt thing, but do not pay anything. Offer assistance, get him in touch with the SledShed, be helpful, but do not offer to pay for anything.

Like said before, "Sh!t happens" It does, yeah it's sour that it happened to the guy but if you can honestly say to yourself that the sled had no issues....and you can sleep at night knowing you sold a sound sled.......I feel for the buyer but at that price........I wouldn't be asking for anything but some guidance(like I was mentioning earlier)

There's a customer up here that has an '06 X, 162x16x2.5, SLP Performance Package, CF front end and 9"er's. The sled rocks, really does.......he wants 10ger for it and he will get pretty damn close to it because of the number of people interested arleady......you gave that sled of yours away in a big way......you don't owe him anything. IMO

you sold a sled with seizco pistons, what did you expect?
check out my website for pics under motors and porting.

so the young guy takes off from the truck and the thermostat opens up and cold water from the rear cooler comes in the cyl(shrinks) and sqeezes on the piston? maybe.
well that sucks.

I bought my first sled this year. 2005 800 summit with 1300 miles. From all appearance well taken care of. Very honest owner, pointed out every scratch and dent. When I left I knew two things; it had been fairly well maintained, and I was on my own if it blew up the next day. I knew that and was willing to take that risk. When you buy something used you are buying "As is". Most of the time it works out well, my sled had ran great all year. Sometimes it doesn't. If you want a warranty, pony up full price at the dealer for one of the shiny one with the tags still on it.

I sold a sled with a good running big bore. I never turned a wrench on it. Several rides with ZERO issues. The only thing that was in the back of my mind was the 07 Doo crank issue. Go peddle your wares elsewhere Ted.

Holy smokes, you gave that thing away. If thats what yours is worth I dont wanna know what my 07 800R 151 addrenaline (stock) is worth!

I would talk to him and help him through it, but wouldnt pay for anything. As is means AS IS. You know there was nothing wrong with the sled when you sold it so you should have nothing to feel bad about. Even if the kid has to put a couple grand into it he still got a good deal.

What are you replacing it with?

Crappy situation all around. I can personally vouch for that sled, AND the former owner of it. That sled performed FLAWLESSLY the last ride out as I was ride beside him. Dave is absolutely anal when it comes to taking care of his machines, wether it's a sled, quad, truck, trailer etc.......It's one thing to sell a sled with a problem and not disclose it, but completely another to sell a used machine 'AS IS' when it is performing exactly as advertised and have something go wrong after the sale. As far as I am concerned, there are no fingers to be pointed in this case. Sometimes things just happen that are out of our control. Why do you think the manufacturer puts warranty on new machines? Would it be safe to assume that even new machines have problems? If I was this guy, I'd fix it and be darn happy with the purchase I just made because he stole this machine for the price he paid for it.
