how much oil do these 800 motors use? I have 60 miles on the sled and it has hardly used any oil.
my buddies assault is the same way. he has about 120 miles on his and the oil level in the tank is down only about 1”

these are both brand new, completely stock ’14 sleds

60 miles on my pro climb uses about a 1/4 tank :face-icon-small-who

Not very much stock. Turn your oiler up 3 turns and drill a small hole in the underside of your cap to make sure its vented good.

Mine will about be to the add line after 2 rides, 40 miles, 9 gallons a ride or about 35:1 ratio after I turned it up on deep ripper days.

turning up the oil 3 turns puts it at about 35:1?

instructions on drilling the the cap? bit size? where to drill?

3 turns in is a good start. I checked my ratio the first few rides and adjusted from there. I think I backed it off a turn after a few rides to get where I wanted to be. How hard you ride will factor in to how much oil you use also. I also premix 3/4 oz per gallon gas.

As for drilling the cap I just put a small hole into the "cone" on the underside of the cap (not all the way through the cap, just into the hollow) basically bypassing the valve and eliminating the small chance it might stick. doesn't seem very common but it makes me feel better. Haven't seen any oil leak out either and I spend a fair amount of time upside down. I think I used a 1/16" bit.

my “cone” looks like it has a tiny hole in it already. do you just make this hole deeper?

They are much better on fuel and oil if you are coming from the IQ's.

I've had two Pro's and haven't turned up the oil. I'm not saying you don't need to but maybe my riding elevation makes a big difference.
 
Polaris (IMO) is starving these engines of oil to meet EPA regulations. Turn up the oilier. The oil cap is already vented from the factory. So I am not really sure what drilling a hole in the oil cap will do. We are on our fourth 800 Pro Rmk. No problems.
 
The vented cap is not very reliable. Mine on my '14 was stuck closed. Both of my sleds now have a vented tank kit from northstarrick

To find his kit google northstarrick oil tank vent and you'll find another forum that discusses it.

I'm finding that my oil usage is more consistent with the oil tank vent than without it.

Note: 3 turns up on the oiler is just a starting point. On one of my sleds, the 3 turns brought it down to 62:1 which is not good either. Another couple of turns brought it down to 40:1 to 50:1 depending on how hard I ride it. I add about .75 to 1 oz per gallon of oil for each gallon of gas added to the tank.

i vented my cap.

the little white vent at the very end of the cap is interesting. seems like it always wanted to be closed. no matter how hard i blew on it or the outside of the cap no air would go through. once i pushed it in a little bit, air would easily blow through it. seems like it should vent easier.

now on the oiler. i did not touch it yet.
just to make sure (i did watch the video), you turn the adjustment screw clockwise/tighter/to the right, in order to increase the oil volume??
seems like turning right would “close” the valve/flow.
i just want to make absolutely sure.

I would check your oil usage ratio first. The pumps seem to be set all over the place from the factory. Mine has been 48:1 since day 1 which I am fine with, my IQ ran around 32:1.
 
Ya I agree with edge...My buddys 13 pro sips oil just fine, while mine seems to be on a diet!!! I got a brand new cap from the dealer but didn't change so now im gonna turn up the oiler & pre mix using LEGEND ZX2SR oil only. It is true that these machine are definitely oil restricted from regulations.....save your motor...turn it up!
 
You guys do what you want but my dealer, who is very well known in snowmobile engineering circles, does not recommend turning up the oil injection from factory settings. He does not do it on his personal sleds either. If the sled is running lean, the spark plugs are going to show it. Mine are consistently the color that they are supposed to be. I am not turning up the pump on my sled. I remember the days when oil injection systems first came out (Suzuki X6) on motorcycles. Those things smoked as bad or worse than pre-mix motors of the era. Eventually, manufacturers were able to calibrate oil delivery better resulting in less oil usage and less smoke. That refinement process has continued with electronics and metallurgy advances that further reduce oil consumption. Liquid cooling helps reduce oil demand too. Turn up your pump if you want. The companies that sell oil will certainly like that. I am going to run mine stock. I have a four year warranty to take care of any issues that might come up. However, I have nearly 1,000 carefree miles on my 13 Pro so far. I rode with a person last Sunday who has 3,500 miles on a 2011 Pro with nothing done to it but maintenance. The oil pump is set at the stock setting too.

I feel the same way. My plugs look great. Turning up the oil seems like insurance in a scare of burn downs. Every other tank or so I'll add a cap of oil to the tank. Not so much to change oil ratio but to pass some oil through the seals. Hopefully I didn't just jinx myself.

How do you tell what your current ratio is?
 
Spark plugs don't tell the story in a 2 stroke engine. 2 stroke engines need oil to survive and to deliver top power. Oil is cheap and I always turn up the pump, and add 1 ounce per gallon to the tank. Cheap insurance.
