Catalyst M series weight

It may have something to do with balancing the sled side-to-side, making it easier to get on edge on the right side. I know I've heard that theory before, and it seems more plausible to me. Did something change with sound levels around 2015? I still run the stock can on my pro; it only weighs around 12 lbs, and it's not noisy. I've been told - and my own research into cans agrees - there's not much out there that's lighter, not noisy, and doesn't lose power. The Axys can gained a ton of weight (it's over 20 lbs), but I haven't noticed it being much quieter.

Given how sled manufacturers chase weight numbers (for good reason), it's just hard to believe they couldn't come up with a can that passes the feds' sound test and weighs closer to 10lb, not over 20. There are plenty of reasonably quiet cans out there in the 10lb range; I just don't see why you'd need that much weight to make it quiet enough. I could be wrong, but even if they came up with a magic weightless silencer that costs them $5, it's possible they'd just build 15lbs of ballast into the right side because the average rider would prefer how that handled - despite the unnecessary weight. I guess I could test that theory by throwing 10lbs onto the right side of my sled! But then, if I liked it that much, why make it dead weight? Maybe turbo sleds have more of an argument going for them...
Just put a turbo on the right side and a light can. That is how to balance the sled.
 
I weighed my Mountain Cat (154x3, manual start, g8 gauge, bone stock) yesterday and ended up at 512.5. This is ready to ride weight with all fluids topped off and includes a spare belt and final drive belt. Also threw on my tunnel pack just to see how much that weighed which was another 10lbs. Almost the exact weight of my 600 catalyst last year weighed in the same manner. Pretty stoked to be the same weight but with some extra ponies this year.

 
From some videos I've seen, the Mountain Cat Alpha One is coming in 10-15 lbs lighter than Polaris. Minimal, but worth mentioning. At least it's a lot lighter than they were in the past. When moving my Catalyst around in the trailer, it feels pretty much the same as my Khaos. My King Cat is a lot lighter in back but a lot heavier up front. Gee, I wonder why. :-p
Mountain sledder garage just did a video and they were within a pound of each other. The Polaris holds more fuel though.
 
My Mountain Cat should come in around 490# RTR with hard core boards and ti can.

The hood with G8 is heavy! Wonder how much extra that guage adds?
 
9r holds more fuel I’m guessing.

Pol - 424.4
AC - 429.4 (AC's listed dry weight is 424 so right in line with coolant capacity)

His ready to ride weights (full of fuel and oil):
Pol - 497
AC - 499

His AC ready to ride weight is right in line with several other posted weights. I can't speak for the Polaris weight, I honestly don't pay any attention to those sleds.

I guess maybe there is an additional 15lb difference with the extra track length and shock packages? Outside of that I do not know what it could be other then the sleds had some fuel in them.
 
The op had a 6 pound difference between a 154 Alpha and 165 sp.It’s like niners has a battery in it.
 
Can’t say why, but the only number that really matters is the difference. Same scale , same day. Not really gonna argue over a few pounds. The catalyst is WAY lighter than the ascender.

The sleds aren’t bone dry. Both picked up from the dealers and haven’t been ridden. Both have fuel light on but had enough fuel to drive out the trailer and off the deck. Never have known the dealer to put more than a gallon of gas in a sled. Regardless the important number is the difference in the two. Who knows made the 9r had more gas than the 858?

Maybe I'm missing something in the video, but the pol is 448 and the 858 is 468 - showing the 858 is 20 lbs more? Just seems like they should be closure in weight from what I've seen here and on social media.

Maybe I’m missing something. Seen other social media claiming the same results I did. These 2 sleds are the closest I’ve seen that are almost identical packages. The biggest difference would be the 2.75” track is lighter on the 9R than the 3” cat track. I have no skin in the game which sled is lighter, just posting results that are pretty accurate on the difference between the 2 sleds.
