New to the forums...(again)

For someone who's been out of sleddin for many years, CurtM220, I think you'd be well served to keep on looking at different sleds, time is not an issue here! There are alot of nice sleds to choose from nowadays with decent power and excellent handling. Like anything else, it's more rider than it is machine, so think about a sled you can throw around a bit and keep the adrenaline flowin. Now, as a 900 owner from day 1 to the present, and it is definately not for sale, I would recommend you go with something smaller displacement, time tested and bulletproof, with the goal of keeping the fun meter pegged a bit right of center! Later on you could contemplate a bigger project sled. Besides 3700$ is too much for that sled-given the value that's allready out there.

I went down the nearly same 900 road and the chassis are night and day different as far as I concerned!! Yes the parts might interchange but the 900/700 chassis react completely different then the 2008 and up IQ's.... Your trying to lean this guy to a sled that takes a lot of money and time to make right and there's no way you can argue that! Time he's done dumping money into it you till have a sled that nobody wants and you can't sell it later... I'm sure you can attest to this being you have two for sale..:face-icon-small-hap. I'm not saying you can't make them right all I'm saying is time your done making it right it still handles no where near what the 2008 and up do... Anyways guys I'm not bashing I just think the guy can find something newer and better for what it's going to cost to make right.... Later

Ummm, They have been for sale for all of 4 days and are not ready anyway. Even if someone said they wanted them tomorrow I couldn't sell them right now. I put that on there simply to see if anyone was interested. I have 4 of them by the way.

Definitely appreciate all the input! I've got some 800's lined up to look at this week as well, so we'll see what shakes out. I would be just as happy on an 800 if I can get on at a good price. I've owned 3 Summits in the past, and several others, but the Summit's were the only mountain sleds I've owned. Did a factory test on an 04 (?) vertical edge 700, and was pretty impressed with it by the end of the day. Other than those I don't have much to compare it against. I'm sure whatever I get will blow me away compared to those older sleds. I did quite a bit of work to one of the Summits and that was always my "go to" sled...I had all the confidence in the world on it, could put it anywhere, and more importantly...get out of anywhere. Absolutely LOVED that sled. But I don't really like the look of the XP's, and don't want anything older than 5 or 6 years, so my options are a bit limited. Having ridden and raced Polaris when I was a kid, it just seemed natural to come back to it...besides, I'd rather be rolling around with an American sled in my truck anyway-

Anything you get is going to be night and day over the older sleds you have ridden if you haven't had one for a few years. I have owned my 900 from day one and I disagree with alot of what these guys have to say. As long as you don't run the SLP pipe and flash the 900 is a pretty reliable sled. Mine has never broken down ever. That being said I am also a mechanic who has been modifying my sled from day one and it really isn't very stock anymore.

The size of the engine and the additional weight of the big block motor is the main difference. If you like torque it is a great machine. I have ridden the RAW as well as the M8 and M1000 and like 94fordguy said yes they do handle better than a stock 900 but the torque loss on them is very noticeable if you are stepping off the 900. I have also seen the brand new pros bend the boards in the first few days of riding because they are made too light. The solution is to put a nice little brace that your dealer sells on them, (why not add this stock?) Oh yah, it adds weight.

Right now is definitely the time to buy sleds though, in the summer. You can get sleds that you don't have to tinker with as much and if you are not mechanical that the 900 is probably not for you anyway. What I am looking at on that 900 is the low miles and great condition it is in.

If you can find a newer RAW that has similar miles and condition for a great price and you do not like to modify your sled, You should probably go for it.

Bone Stock 900 166 = roughly 550 lbs dry

I would love to see a sled that is 275 lbs that will run with and cost as much as a 900, lol:face-icon-small-sho:face-icon-small-sho:face-icon-small-sho:face-icon-small-sho:face-icon-small-ton

I know, I'm being a smart@$$.... One more good point, mechanical inclination is highly recommended for a potential 900 owner:beer;

But can you sit on a bucket of icecream and tell me what flavor it is?

Btw theres no way I'm parting with that Pro. The first sled I've owned that didn't have the warranty voided by the 3rd ride. Still stock other than some clutching and adjusting for me and it just plain ROCKS!!!!

Hmmm I'd offer $3000 and see if you can get it...it is super clean based on the photo. 900's take a lot of grief from the internet but we had several that were flat out fine. A couple of standard factory hicups that you had to work around but generally speaking they were a pretty good machine for deep mtn use.

For 3 grand get it and RIDE THE CRAP out of it! In very short order you'll get 3 grand worth of fun.

Most of us are pretty jaded when it comes to sleds and spending other people's mythical money.

Also keep in mind that if you decide to do big upgrades like a better lighter suspension, you can unbolt it and put it onto the next sled you get if you decide to get a newer one later.

Almost forgot, anything you do take off to upgrade you can usually sell to offset the cost of the upgrade.

I can help with your sled choice.... I have a nice 08 rmk 600 turbo sled for sale, that should hold its own against a 900 i hope... only asking $6300 and i will deal with you on price to help with shipping. Ducky i may need a favor for shipping!! LOL

thanks mike

man, doesnt look like this thread is getting you a straight answer eh? lol.

my opinion (which is short cause im short on time)

its too much $$, i would not pay a dime over $3000, shoot for $2500 and do the mods you stated..

i am one of the HARDCORE 900 lovers, and i will never bash them...the abuse i put mine through and they keep coming back stronger every season....

as long as you know what the 900 needs to make it right (like the factory should have sold it like), and you have some mechaincal skills...and you dont mind putting in some time to KNOW your sled....they are outstanding and will high mark all day long..

RIDE ON...and good luck in your desicion.

Looks like you have plenty of great advice but do not buy the SLP airbox(great company though!) as you will not be able to buy the proper bumper you will need in the future. (speaking from experience) Fire and ice all the way.
