New rider - What to buy?

Ok you are in Washington and mountain riding. I did the same thing as you 3 years ago, went riding a couple times with a friend and BAMM I was loving it. Spent the next summer researching sleds online, found a good deal (craigslist) that summer and rode that sled hard the next year. Learned alot. Then bought my 08 XP, that first sled is now my wifes sled/loaner.

Suggest you buy a good used sled now, ride it a year or two then move up to new. Think of the 144 track size as your minimum, and at least a 600 cc liquid cooled engine. Yamaha too heavy, Polaris I don't know much about, so I suggest either a Rev chassis 2004-06, or if you can find a good deal on a used M7 Artic Cat chassis they are a Great sled and there are alot of them around (buddy rides one).

Luck and Good riding! :beer;

if you can afford the new summit xp i would go for it...last weekend i got some time on one and loved it. a lot differnet then anything i have rode before but. by far the best stock sled out there IMO. it will be hard for you to get bored on an xp.

The Polaris 600 06 or newer would be a great beginner sled with a lot of room to grow. Just work on the basics before you concentrate on a lot of Hp.

We came upon 2 guys a few weekends back towing my brothers broken sled out the bottom of a drainage. 1 had a 800 XP and the other was on a turbo Nytro. At one point the kid on the Nytro was stuck going down hill!! :eek: My brother on his 97 670 Summit was outriding them both while being towed out.

Just my $.02

New rider sled choices

Thanks for the input. I'll look into some of these recommeded used models, especially the liquid cooled. However, I couldn't help looking at a few new ones today and found the 2009 Summit 800 Rev XP was discounted and cost less than the 2009 Summit 600 ETEC. This is a tough choice - I'm sure either one would be awesome. I'm leaning toward the 600, because of the fuel economy difference, oil consumption, smoke, and injection. At 170 lbs., I'm thinkin' that will be plenty of power (I still believe I'll keep it for a decade). The 800 smoked up a bit when they started it. And then there's the new 2008 Artic cat M-8 fuel injected I looked at that seemed nice. All 3 sleds similar in price. Used would be much cheaper and easier to swing, but a comfortable suspension and light sled sound good to me because of some chronic back pain. Plus, my wife has given me the green light to go "all in" on a new sled. That could change next week. Anyone want to buy a nice '95 ZX11 Ninja so I'll have room for my future sled (craigslist seattle)?

1 rst sled

If you can afford it, buy a brand new one, go for an 800, you don't have to worry about the power you'll either get used to it or you won't use it all. You won't be fighting the power as much as the weight or your getting used to how to move the sled around. If you don't want a brand new one don't go any older then a year old or unless it has very low mles and know you owned it, or have someone with knowledge you trust check it for you. My view is why buy someone elses problems if you can afford a better sled. The newer it is the lighter and that's what everone burns money getting rid of, the weight.

Lots of good advice the last couple weeks. I went "all in" and bought a heavily discounted new '08 Summit Everest 800 Saturday. Sunday I rode it. Harder to ride than the 550 rental I was used to due to the power. A few more times on it and I will really appreciate the light weight and big power. Learned a lesson early - 3 miles on the odometer and I rolled it hill-climbing and broke the side windshield. Just have to remember to be easy on the throttle while I'm learning. Love this sport though!!!!!!!

You will be very happy with your new purchases, if the dealer takes good care of you. Since you just bought 2 new sleds from him that should be the case. I went from a 440 fan to a 1000cc triple 10 years ago, you will get used to the power. And the new 800 have plenty. Welcome to a sport that will take over your whole life, just ask my wife.

Don't buy a 900 RMK. Whatever you do, just steer clear of those.

In fact, I pretty much just wouldn't buy anything Polaris built in 2005 or 2006. Look for 07' and newer if you're going with Polaris.

I can't speak for the other brands.

Nah, they're cheap and decent if you can turn a wrench (and have the time to do so).

When they run right, they're badass machines.

x2 On the 900...I went from a trail sled to the 900 WAS A BIG MISTAKE. I was getting stuck every mile I came off a small sled and went to a monster. I was not used to the power or the weight. That being said after riding it more and more I have learned how to handle the sled and absolutely love it right now and don't get stuck much anymore. Like a few people said you will buy a sled and in a year you will prob relize you might need somthing else.
