New diesel trucks MPG while in tow???

A LOT DEPENDS ON DRIVE STYLE A CUSTOMER OF MINE GETS 13 TO 15 MPG WITH A 12 DODGE CAB N CHASSIS ITS RUNNING A UT BED WITH A AVE LOADED WT OF 15K ALL THE EMISSIONS CRAP IS HANGIN ON THE BARN WALL......I DROVE IT 4 DAYS AND MY BEST WAS 16 WHILE TUNING

Diesel mileage

My old 05 Duramax, 6" lift with 35s averaged 14-16 mpg. New 14 completely stock Duramax gets 14-16 mpg very consistantly. Haven't pulled anything yet.

06 Duramax, extra-cab, short bed, light load, 65 - 70 mph hwy... I just got 18.6 average (calculated) over 1600 mile trip with very little city driving.
If I "put my foot in it" economy drops off.

No lift, running 235/85/16's.

Truck has towing package, 4x4, 3.73 gears, Allison Automatic, all smog equipment on truck and stock exhaust.

I've had a 2014 Cummins Crew Cab Short Box 4x4 2500 with the 6 speed manual tranny for a couple of weeks.

Just rolled 900 miles

With like 200 miles on it I towed a Wildcat side by side and a dirt bike on 16 ft 3 place sled trailer with salt shields for about 120 miles. Bunch of up down in hilly terrain, dirt roads, and some rough Jeep trails crawling around in 1st gear. Netted 13 MPG. Not really a good mileage judge as I a guy usually drives mostly highway and in less steep terrain.

Then my normal 130 mile round trip drive to go dirt biking with two dirt bikes in the back netted me 17.5 MPG hand calculated. This is all interstate at 70-75 MPH in hilly terrain. This trip usually gives me 13.5-15 MPG in my Ecoboost (I've probably driven it 25 times in my Ford).

Then a long 410 mile trip empty from Bozeman to Red Lodge, over the Beartooth pass (~11,000 ft), through Yellowstone (which is miserable stopping all the time for the tourons) to West Yellowstone and back to Bozeman. This netted me 19.5 MPG hand calculated and 20.7 MPG on the EVIC. 23 MPG from West Yellowstone to Bozeman (downhill:))

Extremely happy with my fuel mileage and the truck!

Nice! That's the truck I'm thinking about upgrading to when it's time to get rid of my 06 cummins... I figured the detuned cummins paired with the 6 speed would get me back to where my 01 was (I miss that truck). I don't need 800+ ft lbs of torque. lol

What gear ratio do you have?

Just wondering in todays world of 6 sp automatic transmissions, how much if any do you see the manual transmission helping ya out with MPG

Not sure If this helps you any with your decision there Mr ephrata but I got a 99 Peterbuilt with a Cummins and auto Allison. With a load of spuds she gets about 4mpg. Empty I think it's pretty close to 7 that's hand calculated of course

Happy with my 14 Cummins so far. A solid 2 MPG better then my ecoboost. Right in line if not better then my 01 or 03 Cummins

INTERESTING as it seems everyone is bragging on what excellent fuel mileage they are getting with their Ecoboost. Now you're saying that your new diesel is getting better mileage then your Ecoboost got. Makes a person really stop and think about which way to go, gas or diesel?

ONLY checking at fill ups at pump NO computer guesses

06 classic Duramax NO mods..(but oversize tires)pulling 30 foot sled trailer SAME day SAME time SAME wind etc... 7.8 MPG give it props and say 8 MPG but it never got it

Traded it on the trip for a 11 6.7 ford...hooked to SAME trailer same day, same wind same direction... same over size tires 12.8 MPG.

no bs

Interesting but of course no help. Its amazing what people will put down when ya ask about New diesel ( pickups ) trucks MPG.

We take my friends 2011 ford 6.7 with 2 sleds on deck. if you don't reset computer it says 15.7 l/100km average on the trip. If you reset it before you leave, its around 20l/100km. If its real cold and windy, I have seen 24 l/100km. Took a 2013 dodge dually with a 25' cargo/toy hauler/camper (heavy) in plus degree temps and was 26 l/100km. thought dodge would tow the trailer no problem, maybe trailer was just reallllly heavy. Had it floored up some hills and wouldn't accelerate.

Tranny probably has a little to do with it but I think its more of the fact that the manual has a 660ft lb motor in while the auto you can have up to 850 ft lbs. More power takes more fuel.

My 2011 F350 6.7 powerstroke, crew cab, long box, SRW, 4x4 with a 2.5 lift and stock size 275-65-20 Goodyear dura trac tires gets 18-20 mpg empty at 65-70 mph. Towing a 13,000 lb mini excavator with the trailer around 15,000 lbs from Jackson Wy to Idaho falls Id I get around 13. It is close to 100 miles one way.

The truck has 80,000 on it now and done that since new. That is stock no tuning, tuning did not make much of a change for mileage, power went up but mileage stayed about the same.

Oh and towing a 2 place drive on drive off trailer during the winter on crap winter fuel it does around 14-15. Towing the 4 place drive on drive off with four sleds the truck will do around 13-14 depending on hills and such. Might do better on a long trip but I rarely need to travel more than a hr to go sledding.

I have an '11 Duramax 3/4 ton. I pull a heavy 20' dual axle enclosed, all steel. She's a chunky biotch. I also drive hard and live in the mountains. None of that flatland driving coming out from MN (not that there's anything wrong with that!). I get 11-15 MPG. A lot of the time I'm in 4wd Hi, so that really kills it. But if the roads are dry I'm probably driving 75-80mph like there's nothing back there. I also keep my trailer gain up around 4.5 so that the trailer doesn't sway when braking on the pass. I really believe that the gain causes a loss of MPG's.

I have seen as high as 17 MPG, but that is not a realistic every weekend number.

Well I have around 250 miles towing a small aluminum trailer with 3 dirt bikes on it and a bike in the back of the truck.

I've been getting about 15-16.5 mpg. This is with speeds around 70 MPH in hilly/mountainous terrain. Pretty happy with those numbers for sure!

14 Duramax

Just got back from my first real trip in this truck and got 20.5 mpg empty and 18 coming back with about 700 lbs in the bed. Fairly heavy footed both ways. Round trip was about 600 miles. I'm happy with those numbers.
