Been hearing (remember hearing) some pretty wild nos on the new 2014 cummins while pulling??? I own a 2007 GMC crewcab 2500 HD Short Box diesel love it, but time to trade for a new crewcab Short Box diesel. Not a real brand loyal guy therefore i would like some honest MPG from the new Fords--GM--Dodge diesels when your pulling. But you will need to list what your pulling, so we can compare apples and apples. I don't pull RVs but run sled decks and sled decks and 2 place trailers and 3 and 4 place trailers. would ya help me out with some info. thanks

There are way too many variables.
-Weight of trailer
-Size of tires on truck
-Leveled or OEM truck
-Road conditions
-Road Grade
-Speed
-trailer dimension, enclosed, gooseneck, open

What I'm getting at is it will be hard to get apples with apples

A good friend has a 13 ccsb cummins with stock tires and g56 trans. He gets 18 all day long empty at 75. An old boss has a 14 cummins auto, all stock, just towed a 28' enclosed with a 22k gcwr from Spokane to Seattle, cruise was at 70, and he got a hand calcd 13.8. Another friend has a 13 p stroke auto, also stock and from Helena to Jackson and back with a deck at about 75-80, he got 12

I understand what your saying and don't really dissagree, but if enough people post up their results, you can get a pretty good idea.

You will never get a straight, realistic, meaningful, truthful or otherwise useful answer about diesel mileage on an internet forum. Period.

You need to start talking to fleet managers who manage fleets of work trucks. That will tell you what you need to know.

Yeah because the drivers of fleet trucks treat them and drive them the exact same as they would drive our personal rigs. I bet fleet trucks have large variances in mileage between pickups and drivers, just like Internet forums.

Hell I have a 12 with mini maxx and 5" and am lucky to get 16 with her. Part of me wishes I would have waited for a 13 and left it stock. I think one of the largest problems is people using the lie o meter instead of hand calculating. I know mine is always 1.2-1.5 off

Oh I understand I own it and IT IS THE BEST because I own it. Just thought I could maybe find soom honest imput from some on here. Thought it was worth a try. Had a bud run from Renton Wa to Thayne Wy and back ( thats about 2000 miles ) with a small enclosed 2 place and a 2014 GMC crew short b....he made 14.7. Thats what I'm looking for, but maybe its not realistic to expect people to post actual results. Oh well.

13 ford f350. 70-75 empty it stays around 18. 29' enclosed loaded at 70 is 13-14. It'll get close to 20 empty but you can't push it over 60 and that's not any fun! FYI those are hand calculated numbers

It's amazing how good of mileage a truck will get until I go with and all of a sudden, the mileage isn't what they brag about. If you push a diesel 75-80 on long trips, the mileage sucks no matter what anyone says. If you can set the cruise at 67, then the mileage might be better. When I'm running 750 miles one way, I want to get there. If I have to spend a couple extra dollars on fuel, so be it. Trading for a new truck and spending $30,000 to save a couple grand on fuel is just kind of stupid. If you want a new truck that's fine, but fuel mileage wouldn't be the reason to do it, other than bragging rights.

Your point is well taken. But I'm buying a new truck because I want to and can. But why not ck MPG out and maybe make it part of your decision which truck ya bye?? Going farther on each tank I see as a smart thing----I travel between 12,000 and 18,000 miles every winter chasing great powder, because I can and love riding new snow in different areas, with great people all over USA and Canada.

If your 07 is stock you will be blown away by the performance of the 11 and newer motors. I gained 2 mpg overall pulling and empty in my 11 cc dully dmax over the same 07 chev same setup. Theres a reason ford keeps changing there motor.

I don't think ford is gonna change motors again soon! The 6.7 is pretty solid and arguably the best diesel currently out there.

The new p stroke is an impressive engine. They have had some valve train failures, and a common cp4 failure, but nothing as bad as the previous two! You will never find a problem free diesel, mostly thanks to the EPA now.

I just ran a full tank on the interstate at 80, got 16.4 hand calcd.

I made sure to throw the "arguably" in there so I didn't start a cat fight! I've owned a few different Cummings ( 98-05) and loved em'. Especially the fuel mileage. A 6.4 and the 6.7 ford. So I'm not necessarily brand loyal and all the motors out there now seem to be good. Of the three nobody seems to have a huge advantage in the mpg dept. they're all way to expensive and could be getting better mileage without the emissions bs

Bingo!

It basically boils down to dealer service and personal preference.

Diesel's are going through the same growing pains that gassers went through twenty years ago. Some day they'll get it figured out, but until then, keep your wallet open. I bought a 2500 gasser just for those reasons. Mileage isn't a whole lot worse, they haul most loads just fine, and cost less to maintain. Heck I can replace my engine at 200,000 miles for what a set of deisel injectors cost.

My '13 6.7 cummins with 19K miles gets literally the same mileage empty and towing as '05 dually work pickup with the 5.9 and 250k miles.
The DEF fluid is a non issue to me, I rarely need to buy a $15 2 gal jug of it.
I do really like the 5.9 cummins, very reliable, good power, etc....but with that being said, I will not buy another 5.9. The ('13) 6.7 outperforms the 5.9 by A LOT, IMO, and seems to get the same mileage while doing it.
All three brands seem to be very equal in the power/mileage department from what I've witnessed, I don't think you can go with any of them...and it would be good upgrade from an '07 (no matter what brand).

My 7800lb crew cab longbox '13 Dodge 6.7 gets 21mpg @ 62-65 empty in the summer. At 75-80mph, it 's 16.5-18mpg depending on the wind. Towing in the winter or with two sleds on the deck at -20F or lower, 10-13mpg depending on wind. YMMV.
