Need advice

I have a lifelong friend (more like a brother) who I am going to have to dig out of an avalanche some day!! I can't get through to him about the risks or keep him off the hills. If anyone has some useful advice, (remember he is my best friend) I could really use some. I don't want to see my bud die!!

if he wont take a course...get him drunk..take him out to the front yard ,stick a garden hose in his mouth and bury him 3 ft deep for 20 minutes...then dig him up(he should be totally sober by then) and ask him about doing an avy course again.....

wicked...thats tough love bro..lol..

I too have a friend that will not take this seriously.Every time I speak up about not climbing he always says that he knows the hills he plays on and that they don't slide.Drives us to arguements so that now I have decided not to ride with him till conditions improve.I figure that if he wants to commit suicide I don't want to watch or get caught up in it myself.Might sound selfish but I now have a grand daughter that I wouldn't want to hurt let alone the ones that love and put up with me. Its a tough decision but the right one. I can still have fun in the meadows I just wish he could live with playing in the meadows also. He is out sledding this weekend and I found myself staying up late to watch the news late last night and have been checking the sled sights hoping that I won't hear that he has gone in an avalanche and will again tonight till I hear that they have made it back to town. So hopefully Darren luck holds up for these friends of ours that think that it can't happen to them.

Cheers,
Dave

I know its tough love but man some how or another we have to get thru to these guys about how serious this avy stuff is.....might take going to his old lady and explain it to her and let her ride his butt to a class......

Dave, thank you for the advice, sounds like we have similar problems. thought about not riding with him but he is my best friend, and I think that I would rather be there to try and save him (so I can kick him in the nuts!!) if he does go down! and he will just find other people to ride with. so what to do? tough possition!

when are you coming down to ride bud?

Take it again.

How would you feel... friend tells you to take one, but leaves you on your own to take it... or the two of you take it together regardless of previous classes.

I am trying to set up a course with other close friends of his that want to take it, so hopefully no excuses in that department.

cobby, all kidding aside, my best friend wouldnt buy gear or do a class either....he always says that where he rides doesnt slide..well for x-mass I bought him a beacon ,shovel, and probe.....when we ride togeather it is the first thing I ask when we get ready to leave..you got your avy gear..he does wear it now and he did let me teach him some basics..but he still wont do a course..I am gonna buy him a gift certificate(for avy class) for his b-day and try to make him go with me(I have had good courses)..might work for you...

I know what you mean Cobby, same boat, different lake, but I'm getting threw to some people! If you need help let me know. Lately I feel I should of been a avy beacon sales person. Guess I missed my calling! cheers!

hard decision but i agree with telling him you wont ride with him anymore. he is putting his life at risk by choice, and your life at risk because of his ego. i understand wanting to protect him but, if your dead who protects your loved ones? we've stopped riding with certain people due to their riding habits.

this sport is too dangerous already, and to ignore a request for avalanche training, and helping you IF an emergency comes up.... unexcusable. time to find new riding partners.

i want someone who is interested in fun but, has their saftey and mine at their utmost thoughts over having fun. (a true good friend ALWAYS thinks of others before them) i want to know if i am unable to make decisions for myself that someone gets me out, and gets me to help, to save my life.

i bet you bring this matter to the persons family or better half, it gets treated different. but be prepared to lose a friend over it. i have seen big egos in action, they dont like being told they are wrong. some never change until it cost them their lives or someone elses. i dont plan on being anyones someone else.

good luck to you. ski

I have brought this issue up to his wife and he just tells her I'm being paranoid. I am in a tough spot!! short of making sure his sled doesn't run, I am lost for a solution and feel like I have allready lost him, just don't know where I have to dig him up yet!!

ANY ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Is he a grown up? It's his decision to break the hearts of family and friends. Do you want to break your family's heart by being in an avy with or because of him? Do not ride with him! Yeah, I know, he's like a brother. Even if he was your brother, will your family feel any better when they get the news that your buried some where in the mountains because he decided to climb a slope that let go? Does he have a beacon/shovel/probes? Does he know how to use them? I don't mean you turn this button and then you do this and so on. Is he proficient with a beacon? His habits are going to get him (and probably others) killed! And just because you are with him doesn't mean you will save him! If he won't change for his supposed best friend, he's not the friend you think he is! Period!!!
