Need advice

I have brought this issue up to his wife and he just tells her I'm being paranoid. I am in a tough spot!! short of making sure his sled doesn't run, I am lost for a solution and feel like I have allready lost him, just don't know where I have to dig him up yet!!

ANY ideas will be greatly appreciated.

not trying to be rude, or crass...but you have been given some options, and are not willing to take them...

you and he are missing the point...it is not about him...it is about his family, and you and your family...they are the ones that will pay for his decision not him...he will be no more...

if he does not care about you enough to address your concerns, then he is not as good of a friend as you think...A friend is someone who sticks with you, even when it is unreasonable and even when it is uncomfortable...In this case, it is HIGHLY resonable, and the other option is FAR less comfortable...

if he wont do a class, ask him to watch this video (click on this link) these guys were EXPERTS studying for their MBA in avalanche studies...

I too have the same problem. My little brother is stubborn. He doesnt have anything with him when he rides. Im always worried about him when he goes. Ive told him several times to get beacon and pack. Hes been riding for 6 years now and been lucky. I don't know what to do???????

I really hope that you guys that ride with others that don't have the right gear, ride with others that do. Just think, If you were to be involved with an Avy, and your partner didn't have anything to find you, YOU ARE SCREWED.Even in safe conditions there is still probable cause to be worried.

A couple of buddies and I had the disgustingreality of Death by Avy,happen a few years back. Real bad conditions, 4 guys buried 3 guys were only partialy buried. One only his feet were stickin out. Those three lived.

The 4th one had no beacon, He was completly buried. and back then only 1 out of 6or7 people had probes, only a couple had Shovels(for getting them selves unstuck.

It took S&R over 2 hours to get to us. It took us 2.5 hours to finally locate the guy. He was buried too deep for a shovel handle to find him.

The real kicker here is, before the slide happend he had got stuck on the hill side, with his 5 year old boy. He sent the kid down the hil just before it let go. Dad got buried the hillside raced down and swallowed up the 5 year old, and when it came to a stop the Avy spit the child out at the bottom.

Tell you buddy if it is so safe, ask him if he would bring his or anyone elses child for a joy ride.

At the time i had no kids, And that really just made me sick.

I thank you for the opinions and I think you are missing the point. I am not refusing to take them, I am telling you the ways I have tried to get through to him. I am desperate and don't want to lose a bud. he does have a beacon, probe and shovel. he does not have training or ABS. I do understand that we are going to be the ones that pay, trust me, I know.

now, that's the best piece I've heard on this thread!

and, yes, my usual riding goup has all gear and took the course (avalanche skills training level 1) when I did.

cobby, all kidding aside, my best friend wouldnt buy gear or do a class either....he always says that where he rides doesnt slide..well for x-mass I bought him a beacon ,shovel, and probe.....when we ride togeather it is the first thing I ask when we get ready to leave..you got your avy gear..he does wear it now and he did let me teach him some basics..but he still wont do a course..I am gonna buy him a gift certificate(for avy class) for his b-day and try to make him go with me(I have had good courses)..might work for you...

Tell him that the avy course is as much to save your life as it is in saving his life. I want the other guy to be even more prepared in the event that I am under the snow. Try that take on it and see if it helps. Knowing how to use the equipment under extreme circumstances (ie: multible buriels) is very important.

Mutt.
