m8 vs Dragon 8 - break it down

Love the riding position of the M chassis'. Man i can't wait to ride again, should be good seeing how the xp's are doing this season again, the 163x2.5" xp buddy rode last season for a while didnt really turn any heads when we were trying to break trail to a few lakes. Sure left some deep trenches to work around though haha. Let it snow!

Freak,
Nice job working the jig!

Lets talk deep powder climbing, can't top the bowl. M8 vs D8 vs D7. They are all pretty similar powerwise.
I'd call it like this:

#1 M8
#2 D7
#3 D8
#4 XP
#5 Nitro
#6 XRS

I never got the whole my m7 or d7 is better than the 8. You guys are crazy the eights have more Ccs power tourqe. Let me guess you ride a 7. I road the m7 for a long time and could make as far as most of the 8 then I would borrow an 8 and look at that I would make it further or faster dedinatly more power. If the 7 was better they would not make an 8.

That M8 and D8 must have been poorly setup. My buddies well clutched M8 had no problems with the D7's. To each his own I guess.

first let me tell you what i ride 08 d7 163,
M8- Slow in a dragrace dosnt climb that great handles ok powerwise feels like a 600
xp- climbs great has good power handleing sucks bad
d8- power sucks just makes a bunch of noise handles good:D

on the hill with my d7 remember 100 less cc's it out performed the m8 no problem xps had maybe 15-20 yards on me and the d8 way behind

my choice

1 xp
2 m8
3 d8 and i ride a polaris just not impressed with this sled

man, them doo riders are a defensive bunch. say you dont like the doo and they snap at you like you just made a pass at there ol' lady.

personally i like the m sleds, which is probably why i ride one, even though ive rode poo all my life until i got sick of dumpin money into the last one i owned. sure my m7 might not have all the power in the world and rip my arms off and all that jazz but i like the way it feels chassis wise and how easy it is to throw around and its been the most reliable sled ive ever owned.

ive rode a d7 which felt ok power wise but like alot of poos ive rode it was strong out of the hole then fell on its nose with no topend and it had the slp pipe and all. it felt pretty comfertable sittin down with the tall seat but standin up i felt the seat got in the way when tryin to lean way out to one side or the other when it needed to be done. the one i rode had aftermarket susp. all the way around which may have been the problem but i couldnt get it to stay up on one side once i pulled it over.

as for doo ive rode a rev a couple times and it felt good power wise but its way to rider forward for my liking. i felt like i was going to fall over the front end. that and after seein a few of them lose the crank in a bad way turn me away from doo.

if i had the money to buy a new sled id go with an 09 m8 just cuz of how much i like my m7, and i like what they did on the 09s. oh and the new cat dealer here is by far the best dealer around here as far as service and helpfullness and stuff like that goes. if i couldnt get a m8 then my next choice would prolly be d8 but not from the local dealer the poo dealer here is a joke ive delt with them for many years and am glad i dont need to any more. ive never rode an xp but just standing on one they feel more comfertable than a rev but do to there great reliability record i wouldnt buy one, plus the doo dealer here is the same one as the poo dealer. i think the newest doo i could ever consider buying would be a 670, seems since they dropped the ol rotory valver for the reed valvers they went down hill on a quick hurry. well there you have it, my .02 kinda long and pointless but frankly my dear i dont give a dam, cuz we still aint got enough snow to ride and im gettin edgy from the withdrawls. well doo boys lets here it, how stupid i am for not likeing the almighty bumble bee?

The problem is. Anymore all of the big 4 brands, are dam& nice sleds. All have the strengths and weakness, but for the most part all are a good choice. Its all what YOU WANT.

IMO I like the Dragon best. Con is the anti-rachet driver, coming down hill and braking. Love the way it throws around. Like the fact that the seat and handle bars are at the right height from the factory.
M8 is a very close second, I could ride either one of these sleds all the time with little regrets. Cons is the rear suspension and fueling, having to keep working the throttle when coming down hills or it bogs when you try to grab a handfull of throttle. Should not have to spend another $600 for a seat the right height. Also a little bitter with Cat for having to spend $1,200 for a ECU on a M7, while all other manufacture's are $500-600. I like the way the exhaust pipe is run except that you have to pull the pipe to check plugs.
XP feels like it has the best power of all three and would be even better if they would put EFI on it. While the rear suspension feels great heading down the trail, it transfers to much while climbing. Then has way to much ski pressure when coming downhill. Things got better after pulling the swaybar and softing up the front shocks, but with the springs as soft as they can go it still was to stiff.
I ride and work on all three and it boils down to which one fits you best. So far for me its the Dragon, but I am a brand whore and will ride whichever one feels best to me!

Agreed on the XP suspension dude! It's really hard to find that 'happy medium' but once you do find it, then it's pretty good.

When I first climbed mine the skies would be off the ground 4' when you slowed down and really started to work. Sucked up the limiters some and let some tension off the front shock in the rear skid. It's pretty good now. For bigger guys they say to use the 'fat man' rear springs. Might have to order some. :o

Who has the extreme in our area??? Just started making the track 2months ago, unless he changed drivers or just ran a 3" pitch Extreme.

More then likely, whatever you buy, your going to get used too the way the machine rides and performs. What its going to do when. So the more you ride it, the better you WILL ride it.

Pick a brand and ride the $hit out of it and have fun!

For me my XP is a blast to ride, all day every day, and I dont get tired when I ride it. Thats the best part compared to my old kk900! I am very used to the XP so if I was to buy a new sled. It would be another Doo.

Chaz

1. xp (fits my riding style like a glove my favorite chassis to date)
2. dragon 800 defnatly headed in the right direction needs a little more rider forward and some weight loss.
3 .m8 feels old school like riding a gen 2 polaris or a zx

When cat gets the new snocross chassis in a mountain sled ill be inline for one

the tunnel was a hold back in the deep for the m. you may be surprised what the M will do without the boards scrubbing all its mo. when i put the bdx bumper kit on my 07 M8 it changed all that. very impressive... with the 09's coming stock with this setup they will be hard to beat!!! have never road a d8 but have rode a very nice d7, felt a lot like the M to me just the angle of the running boards seemed a lot steeper. made it feel like i was always going downhill. besides that the chassis felt really close to the same to me.

If your thinking of the same dealer I am your right. Talk about a bunch of stuck up people. That poo and doo dealership is horrible. There's maybe one helpful person the rest think they are too cool.

chassis, well whatever fits the rider best, I rode them all, like the dragon chassis, M chassis for high marking but my 07 m1000 is a little heavy for big jumps. xp's still haven't totally got use to them yet, more comfortable on the rev?

For motors, I have them all on the benchs.

m8 has best cyl design for making most power with pipes, we also make a 900kit with it. lots of potential, great turbo motor stock.

pol 800, based on the 600 & 700, well that doesn't impress me, small transfers, no stroke like the ski doo. not much potential. good turbo motor.
not going to build a bigbore kit.

ski doo 800, 76mm stroke most of all, good cyl design for cyl reed style motor.
we build a great 860 big bore kit which works.

I'm surprised this is the first time it has been said in this post. I would love to hear more about what advantages the AC (suzuki is it?) motor and cylinder design has for modification or turbo application from the pros like kost a bunch who know what they are talking about. What can you tell us that won't compromise your business, but rather maybe even get you more?

I'm a Poo freak. Love how they can be set up to almost react to your thoughts or an extension of your body. One said like ski's strapped to your feet. Going to really miss my D7 and T600. Hated all the XP's I have ridden, but they had stock set-up and I understand that they have learned to resolve the stiffness or iron wall you hit when sidehilling in the front suspension of the XP. I'm sure it's great in the deep powder when you rarely hit that wall. Excited to ride one this winter by someone who knows how to fix it. One is even turboing his. I'm sure I'll like it too and it will be worth having. Never liked the older Kitty Cat chassis but I'm with most of those building an 09 M8 Turbo for what they say you can do to the motor, and also for what they have done to the rest of the sled. I'm going to follow some of those who have ridden the best versions of them all, that chose to ride the M turbo this year. And I can't wait. Hope to get to ride one of those M1200T's. I hated the handling of the titanium turbo Apex I rode. But can't imagine one having more power. Would love to find out for myself if the 1200 is a better all around package for my liking.

IMO these are the 2 best mtn sled out

Negative Sir, the XP is the best all around Boondocking/trail/mtn sled, but the easy BD turbo kit for the M made me jump ship (and i gotta steller deal, thx trav:beer;), this engine/turbo will be stuffed in an XP if this M does not work for me......JMO

A BOSS seat and some USI shoes will make that M much better, i got em both and some really trick shock covers:o....and its needs some help with the skid suspention....working on it, a friend tells me you can simply move three bolt holes to get the rear skid to move around like the HOLZ.....im pretty much commited to this M for year, gotta make it work for me:D

just noticed your from logan, yup im pretty sure we're thinkin of the same stealership, good ol "Renegays"

Chaz, Rhys's uncle bought those two from the states last year, and left it up here for him to break in and play with. Unsure what/how it was done, but it had an extreme, 9" billets, can, and some clutch work.

Why does Freak care about stock sled preformance? His leaf blower has a turbo.

Who ever took the shot at the Poo riders HAS to ride a XP. They own the sensitive card.
Now I have rode Ms IQs Revs & XPs. I prefer my sled with my set up. If you ride what your dealer sold you, your missing out. I have a 600 that has embarrassed alot of bigger sleds. Im not a great tuner but I have alot of buddies with great ideas. Im not running on the ragged edge either, fill the gas fill the oil pull the rope, take advil for the perma grin. If you have something to prove show me on the mnt.

I have spent time on both the cat and poo. I like riding them both. I just got the parts to fix the tunnel on my M. It was just kinked a little bit in the rear piece. It's going to cost me chump change to fix it. My buddy poked a hole in his dragons running board. You have to buy the whole enchilada to fix anything on that tunnel. Major Cha Ching! Cat for me:)

Remind me not to buy from Sierra Mtn Powersports... I try to avoid threads like this but after that reply... i couldn't take it anymore!

M1000 takes it all.. Never rode one but have got worked by a couple on my XP. Beat but not near as bad as you would think going against a sled with 200 more CC's and alot bigger track

XP (the 3 in our group i would challenge to any stock M8, D7, or D8 you can throw at me)
D8 and XRS (when set up right with updates!) are similar and in third place
D7 M8 and M7 kinda come down to the snow conditions that day, and is a toss up as far as i've seen

This is my honest opinion and have spent multiple seat times on all except the nitro.
(have no room to comment on a nitro as i have never rode one)

I ran a 07 dragon last year for about 1200 miles before i bought my xp and they are both AWESOME sleds.. my favorite though? this year i will be on my xp full time!

Its all what you fell comfortable on. Test all of them, then decide. Im looking at buying a sled too, goin from a 03 800 summit. I've rode a D( which on that day was out pullin his other sled a D8) and the xp. NOT the M series which I really want to ride. The only experiance I have with the M-seiries is a Nos M8. This is my opinion.

The D7, a sneaky power. You dont really feel it but it climbs really well. Handles like a dream, side hills like a champ!!!

The xp, AWSOME Power. handling takes getting used to, but not bad and once you can ride it, its a sweet resonding sled.

But you'll never get a good feel for eighter sled until you ride all of them. Good luck and happy trails.
