Loud Exhaust On Snowmobiles... Is there a place for this anymore?

There is one gentleman in my community that shoots skeet...actually he is the president of the skeet/trap/sporting-clays club... An active member of the NRA worked on Bush’s campaign and has 3 boats, 2 pickups, hot rods, a Harley etc... He also likes to go "skinny skiing" with his wife & 3 kids. He HATES snowmobilers because of the rude treatment that he has run into from SOME snowmbilers on a regular basis. He is a good guy, is an ANTI sierra club activist.... but if a proposal that he could vote on for the closure of access to trails came up... he would most likely vote for the closure. THESE are the type of people that will decide our fate as sledders ... and not only some extremist.

He admits that it is just some "bad apples" and not all snowmobilers that he felt were rude, but it took a lot of convincing on my part to change his mind.

mountainhorse,

Take this dude out for a ride. He is exactly the sort we need to recruit.

I've offered many times... He has no interest in sledding..... He's even been over to my buddies shop... 3 stock Phazer 4-strokes in the garage... real quiet... just not his thing.

I'll keep trying though.

Talk about a double standard...I have been involved with 4 separate shooting range/trap and skeet club closures in arizona...guess what..all over the noise of shooting:eek::eek: and all 4 lost and are closed now. So next time you see him just tell him his sports next....pretty hard to put a muffler on a kreigoff..

Personally I cannot stand that irritating empty barrel clank that the Cummins engines in the early Dodge diesel pickups make, could we check into banning them also----------nevermind I guess Fiat is going to take care of that.

Where I ride from the time I leave my truck to the time I return there are only snowmobilers. I run a loud can on my 900 but. If I was riding in areas where there are other users I would definitely think about changing my can out for a more quite version. I think it just comes down to using common sense.

I ride a loud sled.........sometimes

I am very concious of it near non-sledders. It's still loud, but one mountain range back, can't be heard. Less restriction ''does'' equal more power , if tuned properly, most systems are not, so they're just loud. I have a '09 M-8 and it will stay stock as a second sled.
So.........What I'm saying is; Lets try to improve and be quiet, but not because of ''them''. I've delt with them for thrirty years and know for a fact, that they will jump right to their next objection till we are defeated. PLEASE..lets realize this and except each others love for the sport, loud, quiet, slow, fast, high , low whatever. I won't critize you, please don't critize me. We'll handle the future together. "If we are together''

decibel levels

Just got an email from Jim (tech specialist) at SLP. He said their model silencer for an 08 Dragon 800 is 88dbs. That is really low. Hope that helps anyone out there considering an aftermarket can. I'm having my dealer get me an SLP for my sled (that is currently receiving the recall rebuild).:D

I loved my CPI twins, the way they sounded and the power they made, but I opted to trade them for a SLP single and can. Where I am you have to respect those who give land so you can ride, especially when it's right through their back yard ay 3 a.m. Soon I'm sure "loud" will be a thing of the past.

for 3 years i have been playing with tryingto get the exhaust sound as it leaves the can to change . saw a clever device on a smaller motor work and couldnt find a way to make it work on the larger motors we have in sledding today .
mid summer i believe i stumbled on to some very promiseing gains .dropping exhaust decibels down into the low 60,s
as we are now just getting enough snow to go and do some testing i am looking forward to seeing how well it works in the field .
this was on a nytro with stock style can and with a mod style can . both showed very good reductions and i wont be surprised if i get nearly unheardable out of the stock style can on the nytro.
will be trying this on a popular versiion we sell in the stock 800 cans .
ttypically in the past the loss of sound usually had the system to restricted but this new step doesnt seem to have any noticable loss there .
field testing will tell .
will keep all posted , have a head cam this season so we can get some from the riders seat perspective for ya .

i believe a posative approach to our growing sound issue is the best resolve .

Thumbs up to you turboal

Great post turboal, thank you!! :) Please do check back in and let us know how things are working. That's fantastic news, and I hope it plays out the way you think it will. Good to see someone actively working on a product for performance with less noise.

I'm a A-hole when it comes down to loud exaust.

If I catch anyone halling A** apast a crowd of people or a group of skiers Ill stop you and give you a ear full.
Ive done it a few times already and Im sure it will happen again.
Same with halling a** apast a slower moving tour.

Slow down, atleast around 35 mph people and maybe give them a quick wave. It helps our situation.

Don't be foolish and ruin our sport cause you think your a hot shot or a parking lot racer. (Anti-Hero)

Thats great we have the snowmobile wannbe cops out now! Are you the same gut that regulates speed on the highway so that people that want to go faster can't? So god forbid if we don't ride the same speed and it is not acceptable to you, you are going to chase us down and correct us. That is just asinine! also what does this have to do with loud pipes?

Anit-hero... I think you may have read his post wrong.

Not a trail cop from what I read. But someone who has seen people being endangered and wanting to step up and do something about it.

I'm sure you would help out people if someone was doing something that endangered their lives.... Does that make you a cop too.

If some punk was blasting his boombox in the next yard over during your kids birthday party (or your boss's birthday party)... does that make you "Police of the block" or someone that cares about their community?

I've watched sledders side hill a high avy risk slope above a group of tourers... gave them an earful as they were endangering lives of others. If that makes me a cop... then so be it.

We'll see real cops soon enough at the access points and along the trails if we, as sledders who love the sport, don't patrol ourselves.... IMO.

And yes, I really don't like the guy in the left lane at 55mph either. Who does.

Your just pissed because your one of the ones that has no respect or regard for people around you or for the sport of snowmobiling if you can't handle doing those two little things when you pass a group of skiers or a slow a** snowmobile tour, and you shouldnt be snowmobiling.

The best businesses out there are ran by word of mouth so don't give them more negitive stuff to say and spread about our sport/business.

What does loud exaust have to do with this? Well it works like this:
* The faster you go the louder your exaust gets.
* The louder your exaust gets the more people get pissed for hurting there
ears or scaring the sh** out of them.
* The more people you piss off and scare the more it hurts our sport.
* The more you hurt our sport the less riding area we have to ride.

Do I need to continue for you or do you get it?

I never said anything about going the same speed &
No smart a** I don't regulate the highway or am I trying to be a wannabe anything. Just tired of people using there a** to think instead of there head.

I don't think you want me passing you on the trail at a 100 or so on full boost cause I can tell you one thing, it will hurt and scare the sh!t out of you.

Nope, sorry we generally ride 35 to 45 mph down the trail on the trail as little as possible, we see maybe 10 sleds all day, while riding. But if people enjoy riding fast let them ride like bats out of hell, and if poeple enjoy riding slow let them, but neither party should cry because of the others actions. Then you explain to me about your boost and how loud it is and you are going to chase down folks going fast to give them an ear full, think of this you are traveling at 40 and someone passes you at 80, exactly how loud is your sled to catch up? hypocrite, and sure you can call me parking lot racer whatever and I am sure you are the king of A-cup hill! Yes you are right I have NO respect for ourdoor users, frankly I have no clue what an ourdoor user is!

Currently: Anti-hero with no respect for other ourdoor users.

You attacking me with my spelling on outdoor just goes to show that you have nothing better to say or point to prove on this.
I quoted myself so you can read what I wrote in the first post and what I have a problem with cause you have seem to have forgot, and I'm am very sure that everyone on here will agree with me that haulling a** apast a group of people, a pack of skiers or a slow moving tour is and always will give a bad image of what snowmobilers are really like. (A-holes) Don't put words into my mouth either.

Again I don't care how fast you ride down the trail as long as you show some damn respect and courtesy for others when due.

hypocrite??? LOL Thats like calling a cop a hypocrite for catching up to a car that was speeding. If you wouldnt have caused the problem in the first place.

Don't you worry about my exaust buddy!

All in All just stay off the throttle in the parking lot, around groups of people and skiers.
