Kakwa

Definitly anywhere is better then Kakwa, its not even worth telling you where it is. Just forget you ever heard that name.

It is near Grande Cache up Hwy 40. Easier to access going through Grande Prairie and coming down hwy 40 from Edmonton. Follow the Kakwa river on a map.

Those guys are right though, if you havnt been there i hear it can be hard to get around as there are no maps, just secret spots. You have to be careful you dont go into the park (Willmore)

It is a little far for me from Edmonton and there are no hotels so bring the pup-tent.

Secrets out Boys !
:present:

Thanx, if you guys look where I'm from :p I'm not the one that's gonna make first tracks very often :eek:

Wow I never new it was such a big secret lol. The Kakwa staging area is located at km160 or so on the Two Lakes road. Grande Prairie is about the closest city. You can also get to the area from the prince goerge side, but ist about 50 or 60 km trail I think.

Here is the link to the Grande Prairie sled club, they have good info.

Just go south of Grande Prairie towards Grovedale. Turn right at Grovedale and follow the road for 140 km's.You will run right into the parking lot!!!! Take lots of gas as you have a long trail ride in from there to the hills. Spare gas is a must!!!! We ride other area's that you don't have to pack gas. Chetwyd area is nice. Lots of people willing to show people around. Kakwa is nice if you have a camp but it's almost to far to go for a day trip. You guy's can keep Kakwa I'll ride other places.

Must sure suck to ride an area constantly where you don't need extra gas. Sounds like u should expand your horizons a bit. :) And I imagine everybody goes to the same little bowls, and from little area to little area. Kakwa is pretty big and vast, so if you're a bit nervous about the steeper climbs and big bowls, its certainly understandable. It can be scary in some of the places, but the rewards are worth it once you get over your fears. :beer;

Well said Slick. It just blows me away when you ride past big bowls and steep hills that don't have a mark on them to get to the real riding. The other areas in the northern rockies seem to have every little clearing and hill beat to death most of the time. Kakwa has my vote for the best place on Earth but that is a secret.

Ha Ha ya I have a problem with bungie cords holding my gas on, I think I go to fast or something like that. Truth is I like the area's I go to because there are few people that go there so we have the place to ourselves. But it is nice to see other's once in a while though. I've met some of my best friends this way!!! Oh and ya I have a fear of heights, But climbing isn't an issue it's the coming down I hate!!!!! I have rode Kakwa a bit and my favorite spot there is the sunshine bowl. But the trail is a killer to me, I'd rather ride the highway for an extra hour in my truck!!!!!!:beer;:beer;

It's the coolest place to ride. Doing 160+ km in a day is not uncommon. We used to have to wait until late winter for the snow to set before we could go really deep into the area. With the sleds we have now we can pull the big hills any time (almost). Head towards Mount Sir Alexander if you can. The trail-head is its own little village. Guys spend the weekend in old converted buses, tents or trailers that they drag in for the winter.

My take on kakwa

Well here is my opinion on this subject, Kakwa is huge there are so many places to go there and it is by far the most diverse place to ride, with that being said I still get sick of the long days and huge trail ride if i could unload at kakwa lake i'd be much hapier. Sir mount alexander is a whicked area that is like no other that i have riden but usually by the time you get there its after lunch, i like kakwa but it seems to be so busy there now that you never get fresh snow anymore and with all the closures the area is getting smaller and smaller. Travis mentioned the sunshine bowl which is totally awsome but now its outta bounds.... IMO i am out for ripping in deep pow no matter where it is!

Slick you are an enigma. Now you're telling me you ride in kakwa too? Just tell me honestly are you from b.c. or alberta?

Agreed! If your gona ride Kakwa take the extra hour and save your ball joints and get to to the pass. A little more technical if you can find it but theres chit back there that doesnt compare. 1/4 of your fuel on groomed or a 1/8 of your tank on some studder bumps... lol!

PIN IT!

Simple, if you like driving your pick-up, head to the pass, if you'd rather ride your sled, Kakwas the better area, unless of course you live in Chetwynd or nearby. Then Duh.
The best thing about the Kakwa area I believe is u can go with a group with turbo's and 600's and stay together all day. Most of the areas have long steep pulls for the big HP guys and always seem to be an fun alternative way up and around for the smaller cc sleds, so you seldom have to split up during the day. Red Deer and the pass have a lot of little areas that when the snow gets deep the smaller HP guys sometimes get left behind and it can mess up the dynamics of a group. Also in Red Deer and the pass, it always seems like you're "going to another good area" which seems to always entail a trip up and over into another little bowl which u mark up then "going to another area", gets kinda tired compared to spending all day riding "thru a big climbing and Play area ".

PS, unless Kakwa has no snow, then my favorite is the pass or wherever else has some powder, just like everybody else. LOL.
